reblog to help a friend
hey guys!!!
so this entire past month has been extremely, extremely stressful for me because i had so many exams and i only realised how hideously unprepared i was for them on the day before the exam, which was really really awful. so in the middle of september i created a studyblr to keep myself motivated + get some helpful tips from the studyblr community on how to go abt studying for tests. the results proved to be super helpful and ive resolved to keep running this blog for as long as i can, because it really helps me stay motivated and iāve already learned so many things from the community, despite the fact that iāve only been here for around a month.
but anyways, i decided to create this masterpost in order to help others stay motivated + keep studying not only wellĀ but also properlyĀ i.e. not necessarily studying for exams but life in general, if that makes sense.

how to study when you REALLY donāt want to
weāve all been there.Ā You have a paper due in the morning, itās 10 pm, and youāre sitting at your desk, feeling dead.Ā Or maybe itās 3 pm, and youāre just SO overwhelmed with an endless to do list and so many pages to read or annotate or take notes on that you just think,
screw it. I just wonāt do anything.Ā
Listen, I get it. I understand. I LOVE learning, but I often find myself bogged down by homework, that incessant, painful reminder that youāre beingĀ forced to learn.Ā Nobody likes that.
So below are some of my tips for studying, especially when you really, really donāt feel like doing it.
Whatās your absolute dream school? Columbia? Thatās amazing. Harvard? Incredible. Florida State? Awesome. Wherever you want to be in two years- whether it be college, grad school, teaching, etc. Picture yourself learning in your dream learning environment, doing what you love the most. Maybe for you, that daydream means picturing yourself in a New York City coffee shop, working on Literature homework from Barnard College. Or maybe it means cramming biology in a crowded, raucous library at UMass.Ā Whatever makes you get excited about learning- take the fuel you feel from those daydreams and use it to fan the flames of your love for learning.Ā
Treat every single class like itās your absolute favorite class ever. Listen. I donāt care if you have the shittiest teacher on planet earth. I donāt care if you couldnāt give less of a fuck about quantum physics or functions or whatever. You have the privilege and the opportunity to learn anything and everything, and we could all do good to stop taking that for granted. Treat AP Calculus like itās your favorite subject EVER, even when- especially when it feels like pulling teeth. But how? You might be asking. The secret is that itās really, really not that hard. There are so many ways to motivate yourself to do that subject youāve been putting off for days, and you know it!! Use studyblr to find inspiration for That Subjectā¢, make a study group, trap yourself in your dorm/library/coffee shop until you just finish one problem set, just START. Chances are when you see other people being productive and getting shit done in that subject (cough studyblr cough) youāll want to do it too.Ā
Eat, sleep, and live. Listen to me: you HAVE to stop killing yourself to do more school. Your to-do list ISNāT GOING TO JUST GO AWAY. Thereās always going to be things you have to do and things you could be stressed about. But stress, school, and homework are not excuses to abandon self-care, friendships and having a social life. Go out with your friends! Go to the movies! Go to that football game! Get the important stuff done and stop worrying about your endless list! Having somewhere to go will motivate you to get done faster, and youāre going to feel a lot better after going out and having fun than sitting at home alone procrastinating. Chances are, youāll be more energized to get some work done too.Ā
Pay attention to what your bodyās telling you. Switch out midnight iced lattes for smoothies and fruit. Eat lots of food that makes you feel good, healthy and fulfilled. Stop snacking on the same 4 chips every time you study and start learning how to fuel your body and your brain. If you know you canāt eat a full breakfast before school, find things you can eat, and I mean MORE THAN JUST COFFEE STRAIGHT FROM THE POT. Track what you eat for an entire week, and I mean EVERYTHING. Track your water intake, coffee intake, and soda intake. On top of food tracking, also track your mood, productivity, and overall feeling of wellbeing. At the end of the week, see whatās up! Look for patterns, dehydration, food inconsistencies, gross stuff you eat a lot, things you want to change, all of it. And then actually MAKE THE CHANGES.
I know Iām going to sound like your mom friend here, but thatās kind of what I am, so: drinkšš»morešš»wateršš»!!!!!!! I cannot STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!!!!! FUEL YOUR BODY!!! YOU WILL FEEL BETTER!!!
in conclusionā¦
- picture yourself learning in your dream learning environment
- picture the payoff, you doing what you want to do - nursing or teaching or building fancy ass AI robotos or whatever it is
- do NOT take your education for granted!!!! learning is such an opportunity and not everyone gets it
- treat yourself like a normal human being.Ā take care of yourself.Ā shower.Ā eat.
- pay attention to your body.Ā pay attention to what you need.Ā pay attention to what you WANT
- drink your water, listen to some jazz, and just start somewhere.
- small progress is still progressĀ
Study routine : night owls version
Since a lovely anon asked for the nighttime version of this routine, here it is!
Now we all have different bedtimes and I have no idea what is actually an ideal time to go to bed, so this routine is based on my usual timings, obviously if they donāt match up with yours feel free to modify!
Our goal is to get in quality time, just made sure you get something done!
Rules :
Follow the routine given below for 30 days (no issues if you miss, Iām gonna miss somedays too)
Post a pic of your work space (no aesthetic required, just a little feel good thing for you so that you actually want to get more ish done)
Mention your goal for the study session
Have fun and be productive :)
The routine :
Begin at : 9:30pm
Study session #1 : 9:30pm to 10:15pm
Mini break : 10:15pm to 10:25pm
Study session #2 : 10:25pm to 11:00pm
Break : 11:00pm to 11:05pm
Final study session : 11:05pm to 11:30pm
Bedtime :11:30pm to 7:30am?
I get that this might get very late for some, so hereās another plan for evening, but this may clash with your work schedule so pick whatever you want!
Study session 1 : 7:00pm to 7:40pm
Major Break : 7:40 to 7:50pm
Study session 2 : 7:50pm to 8:30pm
Break : 8:30pm to 8:35pm
Study session 3 : 8:35pm to 9:00pm
Both routines cover 95 minutes, feel free to add more if you really get into it!
And finally, tag me in your #30donr posts!
Thanks, hope you enjoy this one!
Etudaire š
Doing this one again, wish me luck!

How I Make A Study Guide
MATH
Gather class notes from the section(s) being tested/quizzed
Grab a blank sheet of paper (graph or lined) and write down problems (include which sections it is from) without the answers
Work the problems first then check your answers in different colored pen
Work problems until you can get them right on the first tryĀ
SCIENCES
Gather class notes from the section(s) being tested/quizzed
Write down important topics on a notecardĀ
On a blank sheet of paper, write the heading (ex: Science Exam: Chapter 3)
Start by writing chapter then list major topics
Go through notes and write out definitions along with examples and drawing
Put everything in your own words
Include a āmiscellaneousā section in the study guide where you put everything that doesnāt fit into other sections and/or reminders
If math is involved, include a section for this as well following the math steps listed aboveĀ
HISTORYĀ
Gather class notes from the section(s) being tested/quizzed
Make a timeline of things covered in the sections (ex: Civil War through Reconstruction. Include small summaries)
On a separate sheet of paper include big summaries of the dates, what happened, who was involved, and cause/effect
Study your timeline and big summaries at first, as you get closer to test day, start limiting yourself to timeline only
Eventually you should be able to look at the timeline and recall information from the big summaries page
Active RecallĀ
Write flashcards on discrete facts (things you donāt know) and āWhatās the deal withā¦ā ex. āWhatās the deal with criminal justice?āĀ
Answer these questions as if you are explaining it to someone elseĀ
Do not write extremely long answers; keep them simple and to the point
Put these flashcards in an Excel sheet and white out the answers and recall them as you go
Try to avoid looking at the answers frequently
Highlight the ones you continue to miss and put them in a Quizlet to learn them betterĀ
Studyblr Post: Back to School Essentials.
Hey Hey Hey! A lot of us will be starting school/college pretty soon so I thought I would do a (kinda) big post on back to school essentials. I will try to include as much as I can, like daily routine tips, Classroom tips etc, but if I miss something out or you have suggestions or tips to add, please feel free to inbox me to be included in the post, or simply reblog with your tips.
Your Back-Pack
I have tried to include as many things as possible. Some of thee things you might not agree with particularly and so you donāt need to bother if you donāt think itās needed for you.
Textbooks or your tablet with the PDF format. I personally take the PDF format with me to school because the textbooks themselves are really heavy!
Exercise books/Notepads. I think @studyign uses her iPad to make notes in class which I think is Ā FABULOUS idea because the iPad is lightweight and you can quickly scribble stuff down without feeling like youāre wasting paper.
Pencilcase. NOW WITH YOUR PENCILCASE REMEMBER TO PACK ONLY THE ESSENTIALS. Iām a stickynote, highlighter, fineliner kind of girl, but I limit myself as much as possible because I personally get distracted in class if Iām focusing too much on HOW my notes look in class rather than absorbing the information. So keep it simple. Pretty up your notes at home.
Your Planner (if you use one)
Miniature comb with hair-clips and hairbands
Lip balm of any kind
WATER BOTTLE please always DRINK AS MUCH WATER AS POSSIBLE
SNACKS are very important! Make sure that you always have something in your bag that you can munch on. (something that can stay in your bag that wonāt spoil) like biscuits, crackers, cereal minus the milk, dried fruit and a box of juice!
Handsanitizer or some wipes. Always keep your hands clean!
Battery Pack or charging cable for your devices
An extra scratch book for messy notes, doodles etc etc. Always good to have an extra notebook in case you leave one of your subject notebooks.
Bandages are always a great thing to carry on you for scrapes and bruises!
Tampons or Pads or Cups. Always! If ever you or a friend have an emergency.
Routines
Having a routine to lean on is an essential part of productivity and organisation. You may be like me and not like a rigid, hour by hour routine, so having a list of things you HAVE to do each morning or evening etc is good too. Following guidelines like that allows you to set up time for hard work and time for rest and relaxation.
In the morning, I suggest:
Drink a glass of warm water first thing in the morning.
Take a shower to rid yourself of yesterday and begin a new day smelling clean, like your favorite bodywash and perfumes.
You should ALWAYS have breakfast in the morning. Itās the most important meal of the day so please please make sure you eat something, even if you donāt want too. Some toast, rusks, porridge or scrambled eggs. Itās difficult to think on an empty stomach.
Fill up your water bottle either now or the night before and stick it in the fridge if you like it cold.
Having some fruits would be good too!
Have a cup of tea (or coffee) in the morning. Just one cup of coffee!
Read through some of your notes! If youāve got a lot of time either on the bus or train to school, some extra time before the drive to school, just reading through your notes (especially from the earlier part of the year) is a great way to keep up to date with your work and revise with a fresh mind.
Double check that you have ALL your stuff for the day.
If you can, do a little exercise Ā in the morning. 10 minutes of yoga, a few jumping jacks, some squats. Anything to get your heart pumping!
In the evening/before bed, I suggest:
Pack your bag for the next day so youāre not rushed in the morning.
AVOID ALL NIGHTERS PLEASE. Sleep is so important and I know how hard it is to stop working at 10pm-11pm without feeling guilty but you canāt function adequately on a few hours of sleep in the long run. Your health is more important that the grades,
Nightly routines should END with some down time. You should avoid working until you drop and jumping into bed. If you have to sleep by 11pm, stop by 10 30 so you can let your mind ease into that sleep ready state.
Never go to sleep on an empty stomach
Some breathing exercises or a few minutes of yoga would be a great way to end the day.
Avoid drinking coffee towards the later hours of the night.
Run through your To-Do list and make sure youāve done all you wanted to do. If not, allocate time to finish off the work.
Take some time off the phone.
Your Work Ethic
Itās very easy to get carried away at the beginning of a new school year with how much work you take on. While it provides huge motivation in the beginning, keeping up that motivation is a bit more difficult. ( I have 2 posts on this here and here) Make sure you work is consistent. Thereās no point staying up all night in the first few weeks and burning yourself out in the very beginning. When planning your approach to the year make sure you take time to rest. I have made the mistake of burning out in the beginning and all my test results and assignments towards the second half of the year were below Cās because i was already worn out.
In the classroom
Always sit in the front of the room.
Avoid sitting next to your friends if you honestly know you canāt focus around them. Itās okay! You both know why youāre there.
Donāt focus on making your notes pretty at that moment. Scribble and make messy notes, learn.
I personally have to keep my hands busy while Iām learning, so I like to draw or write down the key points of what is being taught.
Make notes of what you donāt understand so you can ask the teacher or read over it yourself.
I hope this post has helped you as much as you can! Please follow if you like or add anything you think is necessary.
THERE IS A FONT THAT IS DESIGNED TO MAKE U REMEMBER EVERYTHING
I donāt usually share a whole lot but THIS IS INCREDIBLEĀ
http://sansforgetica.rmit/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Sans_Forgetica&utm_content=Launch_Video
Iāve been using this for my APUSH notes and I absolutely LOVE it! Sure I get strange looks from my teacher when he looks over my shoulder at what Iām typing, but whatever works, works, right?
Iām SO happy that this reached so many people oh my goodness
Itās such an incredible project and I hope it has helped heaps of you amazing students to study <3Ā
This is so cool š¦
Reblogging for later.
Itās called Sans Forgetica! Designed by a team of researchers at Australiaās Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, whose idea was to create a slightly more difficult reading experience, forcing the reader to absorb each word as they stare at it. [x]
If youāre healthy you probably donāt realize how demoralizing it is to spend all day in a hospital gown
But now a new collaboration is designing fashionable hospital gowns to encourage sick teens that theyāre notĀ ājust a hospital patient.ā See how they react when they try their new robes on.

This is amazing! AMAZING. Chronic illness does its best to strip you of your dignity, your control, and your identity. This is a great example of how things that might seem trivial to a healthy person, can make all the difference in someones life.Ā
study moods by subject
chemistry: a seat in the first row, diligent note taking, falling asleep in a textbook, color coded sticky notes but with no real system, fingers running across old ink
literature: studying in bed, a cat snoozing on the pillow, orchestral movie soundtracks playing softly, rereading passages that were absentmindedly passed through
math: strong cups of coffee, graph paper planners, crowded lecture halls, a furrowed brow, warm sweaters, that one special spot in the library
history: clicking pens, stacks and stacks of books, annotations in the margins, study sessions spread out on the floor, flickering candles, working in complete silence
biology: colorful illustrations, well worn flashcards, reusable water bottles, always breaking pencil lead, carefully drafting important emails
art: getting lost in readings, pastry and a coffee, receipts repurposed as bookmarks, love for rainy days, in class hand raising anxiety, a whirlwind of a backpack
world languages: early mornings, a deep seated quizlet addiction, studying with friends, practicing presentations aloud in an empty room, fidgeting in chairs, detailed study guides
engineering: hands running through hair, cups of tea either drank while theyāre too hot or entirely forgotten, typing quickly, the sound as hallways fill in between classes
music: stretching fingers after long periods of writing, 11:59 submission for a 12:00 deadline, celebrating the completion of a task with something sweet, deep respect for teachers
Iāve been receiving tonnes of questions on Note - Taking recently, so Iād thought I make a post. Plus, I had fun making these graphics.
There are three different methods that I prefer when it comes to note taking:
Notes written During the Lecture
I highly recommend taking notes during the lecture.
I also use abbreviations for quicker and more efficient note taking. Some examples of abbreviation that I use are:
w/ - With
w/o - Without
e.g. - For example
Notes written After the Lecture
As for notes written after the lecture, I tend to seek the help of Google Spreadsheets or Microsoft Excel. This way I am able to organise information learnt. I do this by dividing the information provided into two columns, one for keywords or questions and the other for definitions and answers.Ā
*Note: This method was adapted from the note taking method Iāve used during college.Ā
Rewritten Notes
I also rewrite my notes. My rewritten notes are arranged based on the order they appear in the syllabus unless there are pieces of information that are related to more than one topic.
I use a black pen or pencil for my written notes, as well as coloured pens and highlighters to highlight the key words and terminologies for emphasise.
Before writing them down, I tend to visualise the layout - alternating between words and pictures/diagram. This definitely helps me with remembering for exams. All I have to do is imagine that Iām looking at that page and I can remember where everything is.

Please click on the images for a much clearer view.Ā
Well, thatās all from me!Ā I hope that you found this information helpful. And, donāt hesitate to ask me questions if youāre confused about this method of note-taking, or any other problems you might have. For more information of how to survive university, follow this page. Motivation is overrated. No amount of motivation wouldāve gotten me through hours of my accounting textbook. No āvisionā is enough to keep me awake til the crack of dawn on an essay that I donāt even know if the professor will check. Discipline is what determines how far you go. On those days when your cute little list of #goals and vision of yourself 5 years from now arenāt enough, discipline will pull you out of bed and get you to work. I wish I knew this in high school because I thought I couldnāt work without motivation. I wasted so much time trying to find purpose before I realized that working now, albeit blindly, will ensure that I could chase any purpose I discover in the future. Sure, motivation is crucial, but itās not consistent. Itās not reliable. You can only rely on yourself and your grit.Ā
