Ryoshu & HUNK comparisons.

And with me finishing Canto 9, and taking immense liking to Ryoshu, here is my little comparison document of HUNK and Ryoshu.

HUNK & Ryoshu are both extremely similar in mannerisms, story, and personality. From the very little we have on HUNK, despite that, it’s easy to put a pin on which Sinner he’d be like most, including Ryoshu’s SANGRIA (in-game universe dialect inspired by Japanese Yojijukugo and Korean Sajaseong-eo), and HUNK’s abbreviation for a name. Like I’ve said before, I see HUNK in Ryoshu’s Mili song, Saikai, which is another reason why I see them so similarly. Since we have so little to go off of, I’ll be using HUNK’s voicelines & his document HUNKpsycho and some other documents he has, either in game or on resident evil websites.

Ryoshu is also described as a somewhat sadistic individual; however that isn’t her whole personality, usually smiling whenever her SANGRIA translates to something violent, which alike, HUNK tends to smile at his alias of ‘Death’. HUNK and Ryoshu are not entirely sadistic people, but it is a mention in their personality, whether it’s subconsciously or willingly.

First of all, Ryoshu’s SANGRIA.

What is Ryoshu’s SANGRIA?

Ryoshu’s SANGRIA works similarly to JP Yojijuguko and Korean Sajaseong-eo; idioms are made up of no more than 4 letters each, (i.e WPF, which translates to ‘when pigs fly’). However, Ryoshu’s SANGRIA forms her abbreviations using their literal pronunciation sounds.

HUNK doesn’t use SANGRIA or Yojijuguko, or Sajaseong-eo, but the abbreviation ‘Human Unit Never Killed’, which is normally spelt H.U.N.K. This was a small thing pointed out by my buddy @/simplifiedboris, on Twitter & Tumblr.

Now that we’ve cleared up what Ryoshu’s SANGRIA is. It’s easier to go off of why I see them similarly.

In Ryoshu’s Canto, the Unsevering, it introduces her past story and association with the Fingers, and a new group formed by prominent members of said Fingers, The House of Spiders. Every Nursefather of the House of Spiders all represents one type of parental abuse.

Valencina – The Thumb Nursefather

Valencina’s abuse is mostly physical, beating Ryoshu & Lucio half to death whenever she would train them, and using them as punching bags whenever she needed to vent her frustration and anger. It’s commonly known that Valencina is a drunkard, or, ‘boozehound’ as referred to by Ryoshu, and that she would order Lucio around to ‘go get her another drink’. To Valencina, her children were just a plaything for her to throw around and use to desperately try and heal her own failing stance as a disgraced ex-Sottocapo of the Thumb, and trying to regain her own former glory.

Callisto – The Ring Nursefather

Callisto’s abuse is focused around intentionally traumatising a child, and is emotional objectification. When Ryoshu was under his care, he tended to regularly traumatize a young Ryoshu, showing her immensely graphic imagery against her will. He also convinced Albina to turn her physical body into Fascia, if that isn’t much of a giveaway. To Callisto, his children are nothing but an addition to himself, a carrier for him to glaze over with his own narcissistic ego and to create his unsightly “art”.

Matthias – The Middle Nursefather

Matthias’ abuse is neglect, he will shower his children for anything they desire, but his love for them is hollow. He regularly bought Ryoshu & Kira expensive gifts, yet never actually listened to what they wanted. To Matthias, his love only extends as wealth, he wouldn’t stand up for his children as a proper parent and abandoned them when needed.

Rien – The Index Nursefather

Rien’s abuse is religious fanaticism, he prioritized the prescripts and commands of the Index over his own daughter. It was this mindset that let Rien lie and control Ryoshu, also allowing the abuse from all the other Nursefathers. He milked off Araya's tragedy to push Ryoshu further to the edge.

Shiomi Yoru – The Pinky Nursefather

Shiomi’s abuse is verbal abuse, throughout interactions and past memories she is constantly berating Ryoshu, telling her how she was a burden on her. Reminding her every moment that Shiomi wished she never had Ryoshu. She tells Ryoshu that every day will be a reminder of how if Shiomi has to be miserable, so does Ryoshu. To Shiomi, Ryoshu is nothing but a burden, one that she tends to constantly remind Ryoshu of.

You’re possibly thinking of where HUNK comes into this, no?

I can assure you that he does! Once Ryoshu finds Araya, she plans to leave the House of Spiders, in the process of doing so, she leaves Araya to ‘hide’. At the time of the House of Spiders, Ryoshu uses the name Yoshihide, which is what the Nursefathers tend to refer to her, so if the name Yoshihide comes up, that’s a simpler explanation as the Prescripts had chosen for her to be named Yoshihide. Once Araya is safely hidden, Ryoshu begins her exit of the House of Spiders,

However, every time Ryoshu used her sword, she would lose memories of Araya, so as she cut Valencina’s eye, Rien’s face, Matthias’ arm, Callisto’s sword, and Shiomi’s tongue: she would begin to forget Araya’s face, and voice. Still, she held onto the memory of where she left Araya, and her purpose of returning one day.

This is where HUNK comes into it, in the document, ‘HUNKpsycho’, which is a psychological evaluation on HUNK by an unknown doctor. The doctor tells us about how getting through to the real HUNK is a difficult mission, and that they still haven’t connected after several sessions. We are also told that HUNK seems to have no connection to his human mindset and side, almost as if some sort of numbing is eating him up. To which the psychologist mentions something, that HUNK has a resonance with the name ‘Bella’. We aren’t told anything about this Bella.

A personal assumption I have made is that Bella is a lover HUNK could not save.

Later in the same document, we are told that HUNK is not resistant to talking about his past/personal life, but he does seem to have wiped those memories entirely, which is where the Ryoshu and HUNK comparison comes in!

You know how I mentioned that Ryoshu’s weapon, Arayishiki, remember that every time she used her weapon, she would lose memory of Araya and their time together. This is where the main comparison comes in.

Now that we know that they both cut out their memories, whether willingly or not, we’ve made our comparison. Moving onto our more minor comparisons, such as their mannerisms of speaking, mannerisms as a whole, and personality.

I hate to break bad news, but this is the end of the document for now, I hope everything was extremely clear. I do plan on rewriting this, especially with more imagery and association, especially Ryoshu dialogues and HUNK; although minimalistic, his dialogues too.
