Butter Scotch Salted Caramel, Elma's, New Delhi

They say that the red velvet is the best at Elma's. I beg to differ. The butter scotch cake is soft, moist and has the perfect balance of sweet and bitter.

The caramel is the right amount of bitter and salty which very well balances the sweetness in the cake and the butter cream.

The cake is very moist. It literally melts in your mouth. Imagine how the freshly made marshmallows from Wenger's melt in your mouth. Well this is better!

Go to Elma's and pick this one from all the other more popular choices and you will not be disappointed.

70% Valrhona Chocolate Volcano with Orange Sorbet, Amour, New Delhi

Valrhona chocolate is the finest chocolate from France. It's hard to get your hands on it and still mess up the dessert. Amour has successfully achieved this feat.

The chocolate volcano part of it was lovely. the texture was awesome and the bitterness right. However, the tart surrounding the mousse was crumbly and almost under-cooked.

The orange in the sorbet was too over powering. A subtler flavour in the sorbet would have made it a pretty good dessert. The amount of orange they used made it taste like an orange cream biscuit that has been chilled a lot. Even when had with the chocolate soil and the dark mousse, the orange flavour was distinctly standing out and not in a good way.

There were high expectations as they had the flavours, ingredients and presentation in their favour.

Chocolate Lasagne, Cafe Delhi Heights, Gurgaon

This is a regular and dutiful chocolate cake that comes along with the faithful vanilla ice cream. When you want your share of chocolat-y sinfulness and nothing exceptional is around, this can make you happy.

This is exactly like the Chocolate Fantasy at CCDs. But better because it's softer.There is alos a good balance of dark and white chocolate in the cake.

Dark and White Chocolate Mousse Cake, Elma's, New Delhi

This was quite a let down; especially with since their other desserts are so amazing.

The biscuit base was very hard and did not lend any good texture to the cake. The middle dark chocolate mousse in itself was not too bad but not great when tasted with the other layers.

The white chocolate mousse was quite stiff and not a nice texture. It's a deceptive dessert cause it looks way better than it tastes.

Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake, Chili’s, Gurgaon

They said that oreo cheesecake never tasted so good. Well, that’s not true. But it certainly has gooey goodness. The truffle layer between layers of cream cheese is delicious! It was almost as smooth and intense as a chocolate ganache would be.

The oreo base did not do much for me. It did create a different texture but it tasted just as crushed oreos. There was nothing binding them the crushed pieces of the biscuit base. 

The glass is hand crafted at Chili’s which is quite commendable.

 The truffle ganache was awesome. The rest were average.

Blueberry Cheesecake, The Oberoi Vanyavilas, Ranthambore 

The Oberoi staff and desserts never disappoint. A stunning yet subtle blueberry cheesecake. 

The infusion of blueberry essence in the filling gives the perfectly balanced taste of the fruit, cream cheese and the biscuit base. I love how they managed to make the texture of the filing and base so similar while keeping their individual tastes intact. 

 The red berry coulis along with the orange and white wine sorbet was a delight with this rich yet light cheesecake. 

 If you visit Ranthambore, be sure to look out for this cheesecake as well as the tigers.

Fondant Au Chocolat, Le Bistro du Parc, Delhi

Let me start by saying that this is one of my favourite restaurants. Mainly due to the many options in wine, potatoes and desserts.

Coming to the fondant, it had a perfect consistency on the outside and a great wobble too. It tasted great with the right amount of sweetness.

There were however a couple of negatives. The inside chocolate was way too runny and the side servings of creme anglaise and raspberry coulis was too meagre. It’s sad cause they tasted quite good and the combination enhanced the taste of the fondant.

Overall, still a great and satisfying dessert to have. I wish they worked a bit on the balancing.

Double Chocolate Decadence, Big Chill, Delhi

Nothing short of what’s promised- there are two types of chocolate and there is pure decadence.

A dark chocolate mousse forms the base, topped with a milk chocolate mousse and a decent layer of cocoa powder. It’s perfection in your mouth when you have all 3 together.

The mousse is always well set and the cake always served at a perfectly chilled temperature. As always, Big Chill doesn’t disappoint at all.

Tip: This and most of other Big Chill desserts are best had at the cafe itself. They generally melt or deform on their way home. And a trip to Big Chill is always worth it.

Lemon Cake, Rose Cafe, Delhi

A good dry cake- soft and moist in the centre. I really like the consistency of the cake as well as the texture.

The thing to complain about is that while the lemon butter was quite alright, it was a bit too much. It almost tasted sour sometimes.

You should definitely visit this café for its old English setting. If only the staff were better trained, the place would be perfect.

Chocolate Mud Pie, Smokey’s, Gurgaon

There are a lot of small things that aren’t right with this dessert- the pastry is too soft, the filling is too sweet, the presentation is not great, the ice cream is not a great fit.

However, as an overall dessert it ain’t too bad. The saving grace is the texture of the filling and quality of chocolate used to make it. It's crust is delicious too- just too soft.

They serve it with a chocolate ice cream with a hint of cinnamon. I personally wish they served it with salted caramel or sea salt chocolate to balance out the sweetness of the dessert.

It’s not a perfect dessert, but it’s still a good way to end your meal.

Banana Chocolate Cake, Starbucks, Delhi- NCR

The best banana chocolate tea cake ever! It’s rich in butter too but absolutely worth it. It reminds me of the now discontinued delicious banana cupcake by Barista Lavazza. 

Personally, though not a big fan of the banana-chocolate combination, I would choose to have this over many other desserts. Neither flavours are over-powering and the chocolate chips when heated become slightly glistening.

The texture is perfect for a tea cake- a hard crust and a softer centre that crumbles in your mouth. It is good to fill you up during snack time and can be even had after meals.

Flourless Mocha Fudge, Indigo Deli, Delhi

This is possibly the lightest, smoothest most chocolate-y dessert I have had recently.

The cake is really fluffy and it’s my favourite flourless cake. The chocolate fudge they use is rich and delicious.

In all, it’s an amazing dessert and the good people at Indio Deli agreed to give it to me with a scoop of ice cream which added to the dessert’s texture.

I feel it’s a tad bit over-priced but a must have nonetheless

Toblerone Mousse, Sodabottleopnerwala, Gurgaon

I can’t believe I haven’t posted this yet! Very typical chocolate mousse. Everything you would expect a mousse to be.

It contains three layers- dark chocolate, caramel and milk chocolate in that order. All the layers have been tweaked a bit to taste like toblerone. The thin caramel layer reminds one of the hint of nougat in the chocolate.

This is definitely a rich dessert and can be consumed at any point in the day.

Shaved toblerone chocolate is added on the top which is covered in cocoa and powdered sugar.

Half a chocolate cookie on top or mint leaves. The cookie is not a favourite but this dessert can definitely put a quick smile on your face.

Chocolate Mille Feuille, Tres, New Delhi

Often, I ignore ordering a Mille Feuille. I have always found them exhausting to eat with all those crunchy layers. At Tres, I was presented with quite a few options, but my waiting staff suggested this and he seemed to know his menu.

And he did. It was a delight eating this piece. Each layer had a distinct character. Starting from the crunchy hazelnut, the sparkling rose jelly embedded with strawberry sandwiched two beautiful dark and white chocolate mousse layers.

The crunch on the base was perfect and that was all the crunch on the dessert- absolutely the right amount required. The consistencies of the mousse were excellent. The dark chocolate mousse was made from bitter Belgium chocolate which countered the sweetness of the white chocolate.

The sparkling rose jelly was delicious. I could eat that alone. Enough wine and enough strawberries. No complaints there.

The dish was accompanied by some more jelly and marinated strawberry slices. What I loved about this dessert is that all these layers when put in your mouth and eaten slowly don’t become a weird edible mass of flavours and textures. Each was playing it’s role very well.

I would love to try more desserts at Tres.

Celestial Chocolate Crepe, Piccadilly Square, Kolkata

This one I have had over 30 times in my adult life both because it’s good and also while I was growing up in Calcutta, my options were limited unlike the present Calcuttan teenager.

The componenets of this one are all chocolate. There is a humble thin crepe stuffed with chocolate chip sauce- Yum! I wouldn’t mind more of it though.

On top there is chocolate sauce, hazelnut syrup and the brilliant scoop of Belgian ice-cream.

Having recently watched The Lego Movie, I remembered the song- ‘Everything is awesome!’ while eating this. So when in Calcutta (as I like to call my city), be sure to try it.

Jasmine Tea Cake, Yauatcha, Delhi

A beautiful infusion of the most important Asian tea fragrances- jasmine tea- into a classy, well-rounded dessert.

The build of this cake is very similar to their raspberry delice The mousse base is a thin choclate sponge topped with a milk chocolate jasmine mousse with caramalized honey milk panacotta well set in the centre. On top is jasmine ganache and it is served with vanilla honey ice cream.

They have excelled in complementing flavours with each other. This is a soft and delicious dessert. And the simplicity of the white on the plate lights up your mood when you first see it.

Raspberry Delice, Yauatcha, Delhi

Pretty dessert, delicious dessert!

A mousse made from raspberry, dark cholcolate and a hazelnut brownie is the focus of this dessert. It is soft and tempting enough that you want to eat it by itself. It has a small raspberry insert which is almost like set jelly in the centre.

It is served with raspberry coulie and raspberry ripple ice cream to reinforce the flavour and they have done a pretty good job of it. The combination tastes splendid!

It’s just perfect. I couldn’t stop eating and the waiter had to ask me if he should repeat my order. I would vote this as an absolutely must try dessert.
