Can we get a moment of silence for everyone who's ever created a piece of art that said "what if it DOESN'T end happily? What if good intentions aren't enough? What if everyone is sometimes flawed and thoughtless and petty and we all do harm without meaning to?"

Only for someone to be like "omg yessssss this is so powerful! And then, what if it DID end happily and the good intentions were enough and everything gets wrapped up in a twee little bow because I have the emotional complexity of a six-year-old?" and then they get a thousand reblogs of people going "yayyyy it's fixed!"

I get that the main point of this is that "tragedy is good in stories, actually" and agree to it to some extent, even, but I feel that the exact scenario you used is missing the fact that a lot of authors of these works are aiming for invoking empathy and sympathy, so fans being so affected by this would actually mean that the author got the intended reaction.

Like, this might be just me, but if this happened to a story I wrote, I would actually be happy that people like my characters enough to imagine another universe where things went well for them.
