Yautja Silent Hand

The Yautja language has object-verb-subject (OVS) word order; it's likely their Silent Hand is the same, if it's even that complex:

“The silent hand-signal language of the hunt.”

“The signs were never intended to convey complicated thoughts, but Topknot’s message is clear enough.”

“Travel time…about seven weeks.

My best guess: Let’s say the first sign is “seven”, and the second is “travel” (or possibly “weeks”.) 

“I signal the hunter captain that I’m going planetside.” 

“I tell the captain to drop me off at Ellis’s coordinates.”

“Glory.” 

“As the sole interpreter between both sides, it’s all I can do to keep up with the relay of decisions and commands…”

…and to maintain the trust between all parties.” 

“It takes me another ten minutes to explain to “captain hunter” and his pals what it is we need to do– –and why.”

My best guess: This sign is either “planet” or “control”.

Collins brothers in the Civil War book (Supernatural)

The half-page that we can see on the left isn’t really relevant, but there is a nice Easter egg in there about Winchester, Virginia.

Second Page: VANCE COLLINS From Kearney MO.was killed by his brother during the War of Brothers.

Aside from the Collins brothers, the rest of it just seems to be a Civil War book (from a bit of Southern perspective.)

Translation: I come before my vision, true woman, so I can burn before your magnificence.

Tip for the spell: grains of paradise refers to Aframomum melegueta, in the ginger family, and devil's shoestring an refer to multiple different plants, so have fun finding the right one. DO NOT DO THE SPELL. Please do not kill any cats for a dumb spell. Especially not for a Roman god that's just a hijacked and renamed Greek god.

After the fact, I found out this one has already been translated (understandably, seeing how clear the picture is), and it's slightly different:

Book of Fenris (Supernatural)

Fortunately, you can read the visible page of the Book of Fenris when it appears on Supernatural. Unfortunately, that page doesn’t really contain new knowledge.

This one’s obviously telling the story of Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse. It might even be a real book.

High Sith Part 7

I have found things both disheartening and invigorating.

Behold, letter repetition!

Clear confirmation of the swirl letter, clear confirmation of the top letter, flipped confirmation of another (which I had dismissed as just a variation on the r-looking one), some lack of support on the ‘vertical letters are flipped’ theory (although this box is a different color, if that makes any difference.)

However, I learned that Egyptian hieroglyphs could be read any which way, and that the heads of certain characters (bird, for example) would point toward where you were supposed to start reading. Maybe this is like that, and only some characters flip when the script is meant to be read vertically.

High Sith Part 6

First Thought: Numbers!

I noticed that one of the characters I have written down looks very much like a number in Common Sith.

Some of these could be numbers! Not many of them, to be fair; it’d be incredibly unlikely to have 0-9 all on the page we can see. Regardless, I’d forgotten this possibility.

Also:

"While some supplemented the hieroglyphic writing to create a style for ecclesiastical uses, which was more ornate than its mundane counterpart"

Okay, High Sith is a combination of ancient Sith Hieroglyphs and new writing; it is not just descended from the hieroglyphs.

Second Thought: the Sith language may only have 23 sounds, but Kittat, another script for the same language, had 37 glyphs. High Sith might have more than 23.

This is because they have letters for consonant clusters, like ‘mw'.

Kittat wiki: Due to its various ecclesiastical uses (such as incantations and ritual writing), the Kittât might in fact be High Sith, but neither the Book of Sith nor Speak Like a Sith have specified it.

Yeah, we’re going to be ignoring this. I trust Freedon Nadd, he was an actual Sith Lord, and that’s definitely not what he was writing.

So, if we count numbers, the borrowed hieroglyphs, and the letters for consonant clusters, no wonder we had so many characters (maybe.)

So, which ones are hieroglyphs?

Look. Here’s Exar Kun with some ancient hieroglyphics.

It is a stretch? Maybe, but I have nothing else to consult, so it’s real, now. And anyway, Freedon Nadd was writing in cursive, things are going to look a little weird.

The ‘u’ is in there, too.

So, the Sith scribes supplemented in some of this and added some new stuff to create an ornate script for ecclesiastical purposes.

Turns out hieroglyphs can mean an idea, a word, or a sound. Not pleased.

Option A: the hieroglyphs were logographic/ideographic (each is a word), and were added in to a complete new set of syllabic characters to make High Sith. Added, not included.

Option B: the hieroglyphs were syllabic/alphabetic (each is a sound), and some were included in the new High Sith syllabic set of characters. Hieroglyphs are included and take up slots in alphabet.
