“Here to drain us of all our hard-earned zinos again?”
The dark-winged angel’s tone bore no warmth or hostility towards the smirking human. The two exchanged silent stares for a time, earning several looks from those around them. Finally, the pair moved to sit down opposite each other at a nearby table, and were soon joined by several other patrons. Palla placed cards down before the others, and a game began. The dealer quickly grew impatient with her players, however, and began pestering the angel sitting across from her.
“How’s your hand, Maladola?”
The angel maintained her stoic expression. Palla was undeterred by this, and continued her one-sided conversation.
“Well, it’s good to see you regardless, friend! How goes life in the Orzhov?”
“Fine,” Maladola replied flatly.
“How’s…working for Old Man Karlov going?”
Palla laughed, and gave Maladola a sly wink. Still the angel did not react, much to Palla’s surprise.
“Wow, you’re good! Must be that training from when you flew with the Legion, huh?”
Palla leaned back in her chair. “You know, just in case you ever find yourself not wanting to work for that ghost anymore, you’d probably-”
Maladola’s composure finally slipped, and the sinister angel gritted her teeth at the comment.
“-be great at professional poker!”
Maladola’s irritation vanished, replaced with a mildly surprised expression.
Palla nodded smugly. “Yep. I mean, you’ve already got a ton of money to start out, you’re smart, and you’ve got a great face for it! I can’t tell anything from looking at you, and I’ve played a lot of cards!”
“I see,” Maladola nodded. “I was unaware I could do this for a living. Thank you for the suggestion, Palla.”
The dealer shrugged. “I’d say something about a conflict of interests, me running this joint and all, but then again, that’s the name of the game with you Orzhov, right?”
“Indeed,” Maladola deadpanned.
