Working on inventing a character Lax Pepperat of mine for a comic I'm working on.
SCARVES - Storyboards in progress for my Second Year film. Some of the drawings look much nicer than others but oh well, I’m trying to get over my perfectionistic obsession and just get work done.
Limitations are Good
For me it’s difficult to stick to one thing for a long time. While there is a small hand full of things that have been constants in my life, I have tended to work in short energy bursts on one of them at a time but eventually end up looking for the next new things and becoming bored when things aren’t going so well.
I think now I’ve begun to finally mature and feel like I can be happy just pouring my time, heart and soul into my art and stories. I’m tired of stretching myself thin only to drop everything and find something else to grab my attention. You can do many things in your life, learn exotic languages, learn instruments, start a band, make games but you have to decide what’s really important.
Then you will find consistency and passion, by sticking to something for the long haul, especially if you want to do something like a comic book series or film. It can honestly feel like being trapped in a box, and it can be scary at times to tell yourself you have to really narrow your focus, but that’s a reaction that’s irrational. In reality, being limited to that one or two passions will cause you to really focus on it. When you are bored and have nothing to do, you will keep working on that thing because you have alot less to distract you.
This is a hard thing for me to swallow, to give up being so superficially eclectic. It’s not that I can’t enjoy other things anymore, but I do have to treat outside things as hobbies and non necessary. I tend to get obsessed with new things I’m learning and neglect what’s important because those NEW things are EASY because they are shallow focused and nothing is riding on them. What’s hard, what’s difficult, THAT’S what matters. I think now I am seeing narrow focus on what I’m doing as empowering and feeing rather than before when I saw it as holding me back, boring, and tiring.
New Years Resolutions!
1. Draw a ton more and get really good at digital inking and painting. Make lots of studies and finished art.
2. Realize one of my comic ideas, finish my short film Scarves.
3. Work out everyday, keep my diet clean and plant based, learn to handstand and other body skills, keep my calisthenics routine going and build muscle.
4. Do decently in all my academic classes, excel in animation and art classes.
5. Learn to play a new musical instrument, sitar shamisen, oud and learn a musical style foreign to my own.
Animation planning sketches of Michael the fox from my second year film SCARVES.
My Short film SCARVES character Michael turn around sheet.
Fake soda ad illustration. Trying to get more interesting dynamic angles.
STREET MUTT! - A design I did for a graphic novel idea. Done in my sketchbook with Microns and mechanical pencil.
YEEEAAHH! I was into regular show for a while and I always loved Rigby so I decided to do this fun little drawing.
WTF? First attempt at inking in Sketchbook Pro trying to recreate the look of real microns and copic multiliners on the computer which isn’t easy! But the result is nice, still will take alot more work to get it where I want it.
Basket Ball Dog! - A little character design I did while on vacation at Myrtle Beach with my family.
Game Character Design Iteration for a RPG project. Getting the hang of digital art much better now, specifically inking. Shading was not completed though.
A Town Called Laku - Animatic Test
A little animatic snippet I made for a short film idea.
