How do you draw Abodes Dreads/Braids? I'm a black creator and still (embarrassingly) struggle with them in the arcana style. (And in general XD) the way you draw her is gorgeous. And I must know the magic you poses.
Nothing to be embarrassed for! Unfortunately there's not much reference for black hair in the Arcana, so we all have to guess. I'd highly recommend looking at @kianamaiart and Simkray's hair brushes for other examples of stylising black hair (if anyone has examples of black hair in angular art styles, please share!!)
Anyway, I hope this helps!
Dreads and braids are both segmented styles which makes their basic construction similar, however dreads are stiffer and hang less than braids, which are quite heavy
She usually pulls her hair back so I only have to pay attention to the hairline, but I draw each dread as a somewhat stiff tube. Where it connects to the scalp I feather in short, fine lines for the edges/thin hair that's attached to the skin.
To show the twisted texture of dreads, I add curved lines along each one. For me, this is a good balance of detail for the style (though I can still get tired of lineart -_-)
Then, as a final detail, I give Abosede imperfect ends, topping most dreads off with a thin twist. This is optional as some dreads don't have this.
Then finally, for colour. I take reference for how they render ropes and add a series of light lines along each dread. Dreads don't reflect much light, so these are pretty faint.
For some braided hairstyles, you just replace the tubes I use for dreads with a simple plait pattern (as seen in Lucio's masquerade outfit). If you're aiming for cornrows, instead of the segments, draw the tubes along the scalp with sharp ends. Then fill them with a plait pattern. For extra detail, you can hatch lines in between the cornrows where the hair is pulled into the braid.
Braids have stronger highlights than dreads, and I tend to dot them in the centre of each part.
So this is my basic process. If you have more questions, feel free to ask!
take it.

You know whatās some crazy $hit?
This fabulous bitch
She makes a shit ton of poses (like 16,000 or some crazy nonsense). Ā I used this lovely lady to draw so much as a teen. Ā Whether it was some nerdy pose for my Mary Sue as fuck OCs
or for full on fight sequences
or for tragic deaths of my OCs in the arms of a totally OOC main protagonist. Ā
this bitch hooked me up. Ā
And with the wildest, craziest stuff that you could see in your head but had no way or resources to reasonably draw like
or this
or this
DUDE! Ā INASNE SHIT!! Ā So I was using her for a pose reference and decided, you know what, I owe this bitch some cash. Ā Lemme dole it out for her. Ā BUT then, I looked and saw she only has 286 fucking patrons!! Ā This chick gives out free shit and spends countless hours arranging these shoots and setting this stuff up. Ā
Iāll fork up the cash, SenshiStock. Ā Youāre worth it. Ā
Check out this amazing womanās stuff, and get knowledged: Ā https://www.deviantart.com/senshistock
I have been following her for years on deviantart.
Highly reccomend checking her out. Sheās the best. If I had any money to throw Iād throw it at her for providing such a big help in my life.
This hero doesnāt wear capes, she instead wears (and looks utterly flawless) in tank tops(?)
Interrupting my regular Star Wars BS to reblog this because @senshistock is amazing and beyond worth the follow and support!Ā I first started using her refs gosh I want to say back in maybe 2008, and Iām happy to be a supporter of her over on Patreon.Ā If youāre an artist please go find her stuff on all the platforms, you will not regret it!
Yessss, she is so awesome! Been following her for years. My favorite stock artist is jademacalla, who is, incidentally, in the last two images above. He has a lot of great angles, costumes, gear, etc! I love his hands, too.

Just so everyone knows, she recently stopped using the name SenshiStock and switched to AdorkaStock! All her links and socials have switched to that. Also she has a TikTok of her doing the poses live, which is stupid useful because you can pause it at any point in the pose for just the right reference.
Literally just used a Adorkastock reference the other night, god bless them

There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without infringing copyright! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone elseās work and pass it off as our own.Ā
Please add on if you know any more sites for free images <3
Thanks for the information!!
I will reblog this everytime i see it
Ok so while weāre at this, I just checked out Unsplash, and itās an AMAZING site for free images?
Reblogging because useful and because f*ck P**terest
Wikimedia (the host for all media for Wikipedia) is also a great source of creative commons images. Many of the pictures hosted there are not used on Wikipedia itself. Briefly read their guide for re-using images hosted on Wikimedia.
Deviant Art also has a hefty supply of pictures under the āResourcesā and āStock Imagesā category, which are free to use (but double check the description). There are also many templates, textures, brushes, tutorials, etc.
You can also search Flickr using the advanced search for licensing. Many photographers have licenses that are welcoming of non-commercial use. (Scroll under the comments to find the licencing status of an image)
Itās also just helpful to learn and understand CC licensing, so you know what you are allowed to do with an image under what circumstances. Many times you just need to have an attribution.
There are MANY free stock photo sites, just Google āfree stock photosā and youāll find a lot. Hereās a list of 73 sites from Canva. Some may require a paid membership, but Iād avoid those.
ayo i found 2 pages with head angles of humans and animals, could be useful to anyone reading this
hoomans
animals
Holy FUCK, this is an amazing tool.
Reblogging for my artist fellows.
Reblog this!
The creator of the original, the animal reference tool, made their own human reference tool which allows you to search based on different body parts and poses!

Just in case you forget this exists.
It exists.
With those āwhen you want to design a character but you donāt know color theoryā posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.
SLAMs THE REBLOG BUTTON
thereās also CoolorsĀ website that gives you randomized palettes!
Donāt forget ColourLovers, either! Itās a social media-esque site where you can browse tons of palettes and share your own.
You can browse the most popular ones or search for certain colors, themes, and even specific hex codes!
When you find one you like, you can download a wallpaper swatch of it and also select the specific colors it uses to look at more palettes that use those same ones.
ColourLovers is my go-to for when Iām having trouble coming up with a color scheme! Itās also been around for over a decade, so thereās plenty to browse through.
Hey iām a fashion design student so i have tons and tons of pdfs and docs with basic sewing techniques, pattern how-tos, and resources for fabric and trims. Iāve compiled it all into a shareable folder for anyone who wants to look into sewing and making their own clothing. Iāll be adding to this folder whenever i come across new resources
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16uhmMb8kE4P_vOSycr6XSa9zpmDijZSd?usp=sharing
Updated just now with new hand sewing resources (mainly buttonholes) and textbook pdfs on fashion history, fashion illustration, and thinking through designs!
OP I owe you my life
the unfortunate truth about drawing scales is that they never really get less annoying to do and getting better at them only means you get to draw more complicated ones
the way they generally work for me is i tend to follow a pattern of larger, flatter scales following the tops of arms and leg surrounded by smaller, rounded support scales - i try to use a lighter touch on the pen pressure while filling in the scales so the outlines end up more distinctive
this works basically the same for the head!
for the longer stretches of body i tend to use the interlocking uās, starting with one row on the widest part of the body and building downwards
copying and pasting isnt a perfect shortcut, especially if you have a lot of curves, but it DOES save a chunk of time
they dont have to be perfect!! honestly the hardest part is getting them to be even, and that just takes a lot of practice. remember that theyll fold in a bit as they get closer to the edge of the body if you can manage it ( which is hard ) - the closer the thinner, which helps give the illusion of curving. uhhh hope this helps
