I haven't done one of these in a while, but since there is a whole lot of fic writing going on behind the scenes, I thought I'd post something so my Merthur peeps can see the lay of the land. Full details below the cut!

ICE is bigger and worse than ever, although the major media have stopped reporting on it. Not only is ICE’s reign of terror intimidating many undocumented immigrants and their families — preventing them from seeking the healthcare they need or attending school or going to court — but ICE is also sweeping into its maw many American citizens who are protesting Trump’s police state. Kind of tone deaf to say “I don’t know why these super strict laws exist to protect wild animals in the United States I didn’t ask for this” when cattle ranchers are successfully pressuring Trump into removing Bison from federal lands as we speak.

We can argue about raising Bison for human consumption instead of cows on federal land all we want, but by all accounts we are missing like 25+ million bison because of their wholesale slaughter over the past few hundred years. They do serve an important ecological function.

You…don’t know why laws exist…to stop people from killing eagles and wolves and bison and coyotes and turtles in the United States?

I’m listening to these podcasts about how private homeowners/landowners can do more to make their lawns better for native wildlife, and one new thing I’d never heard until recently before was plant a bunch of local berry producing bushes. So much is about planting flowers for caterpillars to munch on for birds to eat, or flowers for pollinators.

So why berry producing bushes? Because we killed off bears.

Bears used to eat huge amounts of berries and fish, shit out the seeds, and spread berries around the US just like birds do. Except we killed like 99% of the bears, and we’re doing our best to exterminate the birds as well.

Who thinks of a bear as a creature that distributes seeds (and also technically fertilizer from eating hundreds of pounds of fish a year and then pooping farther inland).

Stupid shit you don’t think about, like missing bears roaming around the whole US, have changed our environment in ways we’re still figuring out.

It’s one thing to not know why a law exists. Totally fair. We should question why something was written.

But it’s another thing entirely to assume a law was written specifically for you as an individual, and if the law isn’t serving you right here right now, then the law is stupid.

hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"

Also a lot of early 20th century vulgarity is recorded in Letter from My Father, which is a collection of letters published by a man who's dad was, in short, a major slut and human disaster who wrote about his sex life for his son. It's insane. You can find copies of it online & it's a wild fucking read (literally!) and I think a really interesting look at the life of a person who goes against our stereotypes of what people in the past were "supposed" to be like.

note for writers: these are dated to the first time they were recorded, not necessarily to their first use. I imagine for many of these, they came about naturally through spoken language before they were written down anywhere. This is especially true of more underground slang because it's probably being recorded (in ways we still have) the least. So if you wanna use a term but it's a little off date-wise, give yourself some wiggle room.

also gonna take this moment to highlight two more i found recently:
