Exploring ideas for a modern-fantasy take on the hikeshi (Edo-period firemen). It was really hard not to make them look like Naruto characters.

Hikeshi were Edo-period firemen. If they didn’t answer to the local daimyo, then they were local merchants, artisans, carpenters, etc. They had these fire hooks to help tear down buildings surrounding the fire to isolate it. Other interesting tools include the bamboo ladder, and the ryudosui, a very simple water pump to be used like a firefighter’s water hose.
