so funny when ur system can identify switches but not whos fronting. "ok i know i exist but who am i"
it/its pronouns have been a part of the english language for hundreds of years, learning how to use them for a sentient being is a reasonable and rational demand to have of other proficient english speakers. your pronouns matter just as much as the pronouns of everyone else, as they are inherently valid pronouns to have.
trying to play peekaboo with my child but he's a European diplomat:
me: where'd daddy go?
baby: we must articulate a post-daddy vision of strategic autonomy
me: peekaboo!
baby: my historic relationship with my father is stable despite recent troubles
one of the biggest issues for feminism and indeed society as a whole that i run into a lot is people don't realise just how weird and interesting snakes actually are. they're genuinely incredibly unique as vertebrates with many amazing adaptations to their lifestyle and body type and nobody knows!!!
i knew ddlc was a horror game but i did NOT expect one of the jumpscares to be my fucking DEADNAME
I use a school laptop for things so when that happened the name it found was "Eleve" which is the french equivalent of "Student". Except I played the game in English, so there was just a random french word in the middle and it took me a few minutes of confusion to figure it out. It was pretty funny.
the phrase "but i didn't mean to!" in the context of causing harm is kind of redundant to me, because almost nobody means to cause harm. most of us just want to do the right thing. and i don't mean that in a wishy-washy "oh, we're all good deep down" way, i mean that even people who regularly do the most heinous shit imaginable will have a way of justifying it to themselves. the world is not populated by hollywood sadists and psychopaths.
actually i have been thinking about this some more and i want to add on to it:
abuse in caregiving professions (like teaching or nursing) is not solely a result of power dynamics. it's also because people who go into those professions tend to have a idea of themselves as Good People. recognising or acknowledging their own capacity for harm contradicts that idea. so they mentally put 'people who have inconvenienced me' into the 'Bad People' box (which conveniently doubles up as the 'People I Am Allowed to Hurt' box), and just like that, the world is made simple again.
i read ross greene a lot when i was working with 'difficult' or 'behaviourally challenged' children. his refrain is kids do well if they can - meaning, in short, that most kids act out only when the demands of a situation exceed their capabilities. punishing them for this is not only cruel but also completely pointless, because they also don't want to be doing what they are doing.
a teacher who believes that there are two categories of people - Good People who Mean Well, and Bad People who Cause Problems on Purpose - is not going to see it that way. they're gonna put themselves in the first category, and the misbehaving kid in the second category. and once they have effectively depersoned the kid and placed themselves on a pedestal, they can treat that kid however they want while still maintaining a moral high ground. because abuse is something that only Bad People do.

3 years ago, I wonder if they have gone through all that rice yet…..
There was a day in 2021 this post was on my dashboard three times a page
As an American, when they said truck load I was imagining an 18-wheeler style truck so I’m not too surprised by the final picture. There has to be like 200 - 300 bags of rice on that truck at LEAST. OPs BIL was incredibly lucky he only had to take 23 bags of rice from that thing.
THE RICE TRUCK STORY HAS PHOTOS
The greatest story ever told IMO
That man will never look at rice the same way again.
FYI Shiv reposted the thread on BlueSky after leaving Twitter. It got just as much attention the second time around (as it should).
(Here’s a link to the last post because the threading got weird; scroll up.)
Happy Rice Truck Day!

been thinking about fantasy/scifi rule systems and free will
every time i see slur discourse i think about this post
fuck i was thinking 'we are about due for a neomodernism' but that's already been.
fine, post-neomodernism then? or rather neo-postmodernism
I think we need to stop giving artistic movements names that will ineveitably become outdated because they reference their own currency. Naming an artistic movement "modernism" is the most "I am the end of history" thing possible
i think we need to start an artistic movement and call it "good". we'll be writing good books and making good movies. we'll be establishing new conventions and narratives clashing with pregood conceits, until those wicked postgood subversists come in and start ruining everything.
had a fucked up dream i had a book that turned out could never be read again the same as the first time because each reread the characters became incrementally more aware that the events of the book had happened before and they were “reliving” it and i reread enough times that they became self aware, figured out they were in a book, acknowledged me as the reader, and some lost their minds or had existential crises, became violent to other characters or themselves, some begged me to never stop reading or they ceased to exist and others begged me to end it all stop reading and keeping them trapped in the endless loop of torment, and the literal only way to get the book back to its first run was to hand it off to someone else to read for the first time and for some reason i physically couldn’t tell anyone about it so i’d have to just hope whoever i gave it to would only read it once and i could never open the book again to check if they were okay and back to normal because i was terrified of fucking them all up again :(
i'm glad people are finding this fun as a concept and making references to stuff that this reminds them of but i really gotta express how bad of a nightmare this was for me. i had fallen in love with the original story and characters (though on waking i couldn't tell you the details), unintentionally warped their story beyond recognition, and found myself an unwitting god that could not provide mercy for some without doling torment to others. one of the characters started offing themselves every time i started another reread. stress dream doesn't even begin to cover it
fuck i was thinking 'we are about due for a neomodernism' but that's already been.
fine, post-neomodernism then? or rather neo-postmodernism
"Human rights only apply to those that are sapient, anything above or below that is fair game." -GOC probably
Anything ABOVE?!?
But yes that is absolutely the policy
things that would exist if intellectual property wasn't a thing
so much cheap generic medication. reverse engineering compounds would be even more financially profitable.
fewer people dead of vaccine preventable illnesses in the global south bc the greatest barrier to distributing some vaccines like hpv is their ip
plant seeds and grafts that come from the plants instead of licensing them. don't invest so much in preventing cross contamination. more localised experimental breeding.
library of the world: every book and journal article in the world could be digitised and be searchable for every person in the world to read regardless of where they live. cheap reprint runs and local translations everywhere.
an online interface where every citation could actually lead to the text in question
freedom from the hell that is DRM software
everytime someone reverse engineered your shitty proprietary software we would all be freed from it instead of them getting DMCA'd
so much hardware would be opened up & therefore made so much cooler.
so many more songs that riff off and sample and interpolate shit from this decade instead of like 70 years ago and more analysis of music that didn't keep getting nuked off the internet
preserving movies and tv shows and games as long as someone, somewhere has the desire to host them
just go publish your fanfic/art/vid as is instead of all us pretending it isn't fanwork or begging the corporation for mercy / licensing
a world without ip lawyers. im getting chills just imagining it.
#there cant simply be no more IP we need acrive anti-IP enforcement #or else companies will still enforce various paywalls and implement DRM a bit differently on their own #same w medical formulas and tech we need active anti-patent anti-privatization enforcement or theyll find a way to withhold it for profit #IP laws are one of the tools of capitalism and colonialism #when increasing capital is the way the entire system works and benefits them #they will always find a way even if you get rid of IP #this isnt to say its useless this IS to say be more anti-IP now and then keep aiming higher

this is true, but right now to break DRM is super mega illegal and setting up shadow libraries sends you to jail, for life. people who hack video games get sent to jail. reverse engineering is illegal as fuck.
if we enforced anti privatisation that would look like forced licensing by nation states, like you discovered a drug? now make the formula and its manufacture public. its much more complicated. simply abolishing the threat of IP litigation protects the people who make the ongoing IP regime bearable and encourage more people to be involved in efforts to liberate intellectual property secrets.
