that’s certainly one of the things he likes most about lucas, among the rest of the items on that list. a fresh perspective. a stubborn optimism. they both have their melancholy, the weight on their shoulders, but when will falls too deeply into his old regrets, the man always seems to pull him back above water again. ‘ never thought of it that way, ’ he admits, an idle smile at his lips as he pauses to pick up a bright red leaf with orange at its veins. ‘ and what friend is that? ’ he’ll tease, feigning jealousy. ( though perhaps not entirely feigned, were he to find that it was true. he doesn’t consider himself terribly possessive a person, but he’d be lying if he said he doesn’t enjoy that the two have each other more or less to themselves these days. ) ‘ it took about a year, maybe, to get rid of it completely. i moved to new york and did my best to copy everyone around me until i started sounding like i was from boston. and i would always read out loud when i was filing my reports to practise my pronunciation. my partner made fun of me a lot. ’
“A mutual friend.” Something they definitely didn’t have. He stopped and tilted his head to watch as Will picked up the leaf, eyes subtly glued to his hands. Eye contact wasn’t something they had much of either. If they did have it, Lucas didn’t notice. He’d spent far too much time avoiding gazes to actively seek them out anymore. It was a terrible habit for a teacher to have, but at least his students never brought it up. They listened. They learned the material. Some of them even embraced it, even if most of the class was there just for the credit. “I bet he wouldn’t have done that if you were picking up a second language. You were, technically. Accent or no, it’s all just learning how to make the proper sounds in the correct order.” He wasn’t very poetic about describing language. It wasn’t his area of expertise. Science, he could wax on about for hours. Language? Well, it had been a decade or two and he still had trouble.

‘ guess it’s not as elusive as the poets would like us to believe. ’ they’ve already been told the science behind the changing leaves, the orange sunset, the bitter wind. rarely does he long for a childhood that left so much to be desired in the way of enchantment, but a little wonder in the unknown is something he finds himself nostalgic of every now and again. ‘ it was a friendly place, ’ he remarks with an absent smile. the colour in his cheeks easily blamed on the chill of the air, he can’t help but laugh at himself. ‘ believe it or not, i used to have the most atrocious accent. not just southern——- cajun. it’s about the closest you can get to a foreign language while still speaking english. ’
“There aren’t a lot of scientists among the roster of great poets, but there’s still poetry in the science of it. Trees shed the most vulnerable parts of themselves in order to survive, even though those parts are what facilitate their survival in the first place. And then the leaves nurture the soil beneath and provide for the rest of the forest.” If only humans could benefit from fragility in the same way. Lucas carefully bumped his shoulder against Will’s in some odd effort to appear more amicable. “And how long did that take? I’m uh, asking for a friend who wants to get rid of their own accent.” What a terrible liar. His eyes had twitched the second he asked, but it was probably obvious by itself. He didn’t keep many friends anymore. Couldn’t. Didn’t trust anyone.
apologies for the delays on threads. i should be a little more active soon and get them out either today (caffeine willing) or over the next few days.
...come the 15th though, i’m going to be focusing a lot more on my Galen due to the release of Catalyst. it will be much easier to find/get a hold of me there.
@skyldfri. // halloween starter call!
‘ god, beautiful as fall is, i don’t think i’ve managed to spend one season outside louisiana without getting homesick. ’ hands deep in his pockets to hide themselves from the brisk, foreshadowing wind, a small, nostalgic smile is downcast as his gaze follows their feet over fallen leaves. the idea that change is necessary, most tend to agree it signifies, but sometimes he still finds himself wishing things could go back to the way they used to be. ‘ it’s warmer back home, for one thing .. ’
“Tell me more about it?” Lucas, on the other hand, walked with his hands swinging by his sides. The cold never really got to him. ...Psychologically, anyway. The pink that had flooded into his cheeks and across his nose was the beginning of a mild case of windburn. Maybe someday he’d start taking better care of himself, when he felt like he ‘deserved’ it. Far more pressing thoughts than a little extra personal upkeep were weighing down on him at that point in time. “--Louisiana, I mean. I think I know quite a bit about fall.”

a ship i would like to see: lucas and happiness
on the one hand, i want that shit to be canon. on the other... it’s gonna take so friggin’ long b/c he’s just stuck in this permanent state of ‘they’re gonna kill me if they find out what happened. there’s literally no way they’ll believe that i’m innocent either b/c i ran and that was really stupid even tho i ran b/c i didn’t want to die’.

1: What is on your character's bedroom floor right now?
Maybe a rug? He travels light, light enough that there isn’t much of a mess to be made. Even when he settles in, his rooms are spartan and a bit too clean to look lived-in.
2: What is your character wearing on their feet? Describe it.
Boots. They’re brown. Matte finish, and they’re probably quite old and creased by now. He hasn’t bought new ones in years.
8: If your character were a bird, which kind would they be?
Northern spotted owl!

Mind was a powerful thing; it would paint him with array of golden and orange rays as a confident brush stroke would caress across his lips, from his coppery flesh tones to sun-strewn glint of his cheekbones as the highlighted pigment would aglow in a perfect pitch. Now, he’s merely at the mercy of the frigid weather as the biting coldness amplifies in inch-by-inches, the plains of his muscles rousing and contracting in resounding flinches as none of the smoothing and soothing ease takes over his form. All of this reminds him of the merciless winter he had faced - the stubborn memory clung to him like an especially tenacious strand of viral disease. No fucking crop survived and food was scarce, his family didn’t even have a copious amount of meat to sustain five individuals, lest have enough firewood to last the worst of the snowstorms. All he recalls is being poured over with desolate coldness from his forehead to waist, drowning in a drizzle of slushes hurtling across the chipped front door, the whirling crystals frolicking up and down the ambiance to their horror. His fingers tighten, as if that sole object could offer him warmth instead of the majestic clump of fucking worthless chrome-covered machine.
He watches the other man through the slitted gaze, as he exhaled and his breaths rose, small and almost unassuming, but still with his innate bravado. At least his wholeness wasn’t stuck and reduced immobile like that ravaged corpse as his subconsciousness wades into a realm of blasphemy, such taboo beyond what normal individuals would ever consider in its vulgarity and ultimatum. His hand would dip into the warm cavity of the splayed-open ribcages, though the fast disappearing heat would be more so temporal and mostly, he would be accused of the murder he didn’t commit, though it screamed his modus operandi. The hypocritical nature of both resounding horrific putrid stink, as well as something bewitching about that colossal streak of blood, bursting and gushing on the earth with the rippling motion becomes a fueling gasoline. The etched violence along with such inclination towards the morbid would be a vehement thing and it would take years and years to shatter it down to movable pieces.
“They’re.. tingling. I speculate there’s still a fucking sliver of hope. I’m fucking nothing without my fingers,” Such contradictory thing, his fingers are. Capable of applying sublime delight upon the carnal flesh, yet very well the harbinger of suffocation and cessation of mortality. As soon as the other man offers up his gloves, he snatches them with a strong grasp, though his nerves seem to be slowed in mid-air, wobbling through the close proximity. He’s itching to chuck off the adhered button-up shirt, which he’s most positively sure that would turn into a frozen sheet of crumpled mess as soon as his sweat crystallize in the nippy air. His still bottomless gaze fixates upon his fingers, drained of color, faded veins appearing through the translucent skin. “How fucking considerate of you to instill that horrific image,” still outwardly crude, yet his used-to-be carapace slowly crumbling down, he already had faced his own demise in the dead silence of his cramped and dingy flat, where dimmed corridors stretched miles as he had crawled through the mud track, where perilous and gruesome sight of blood and watery discharge filled. “I’m not easily perturbed nor scared, but I would die standing than be a fucking desperate one in denial.”
Taking the other man’s advice as he slowly drapes his torso with a coat to insulate himself. He lets this coldness, both from the unforgiving elements and unrelenting rush of memories flooding his recollections and creases of his brain forms an adamant bond to overlap and strengthen even further with the man’s generosity. Though the subject of his helplessness and the lives which the Lecters could’ve have led upon the world as it had been stripped off from his weak grasp becomes even more palpable, the eroding emotion isn’t enough to begin a description and he has no reason to decline the hospitality. His body is in a complete dominion, that damned coldness severing the full-circuit of his constricted blood vessels as his form manifests into a wavering torchlight in the midst of the relentless gust of wind. Still, he was prevailing with persistence, though his steps are robotic, waddling at most. Any sign of movement and thrumming heart and tingling fingers jabbing with pricks as the surge travels downward. And as long as his hazel sparked with sparkles.
“Tingling, but pale. You won’t blister, but it will hurt.” He clipped his sentences shorter and shorter as time passed, eager to move forward as if the storm was breathing down his neck. It probably was, given the state of the sky. Darkened clouds lingered at the edge of what he could see over his frosted glasses as his breath rebounded back into his own face and made the scarf he sported damp. The beast itself would probably stay for a while, eagerly shedding snow and hail all over the valley and the mountains that cradled it. Storms were selfish creatures. Not half as selfish as humans, but selfish all the same. As as child he used to think they could speak. Maybe they did. Maybe he wasn’t listening hard enough anymore. Maybe he didn’t want to. “Not considerate,” he called out, his steady voice still easily cutting through the mountain winds. “Just the truth. I’ve learned to balance both.”
Oh, had he ever. Comforting little lies had their place, but brutal truths could move people like nothing else in the world. He’d seen that first hand. He’d also seen what wonders a little distraction could do when things became dire, so he resorted to talking a little more than he’d like to, given the circumstances. Maybe it was a bit odd that he was flip-flopping so much, but emergencies made him nervous enough to want to try everything to see if it stuck. “If you’re going to be staying with me, I’ll need to know a bit about your diet. I just hope you’re not a vegan, because my larder is limited to what I have, what I grow, and what I hunt.” He had no problem with vegans, live and let live after all, but it was very difficult to wander out into the snow and forage for plant life when all the plants in the area were dead. True, he had a little bit of a garden spread across the cabin’s many shelves and sills, but that was for smaller herbs and not anything too substantial.
Lucas noiselessly leaned into the bike’s handlebars, freeing it from the snow and slurry beneath as he coaxed it in the direction of his cabin. It wasn’t as easy as he thought it would be, but he kept at it just the same. Maybe it would have been easier to abandon it there for the time being, until it’s owner was stable. Maybe it would have. But being the stubborn type, Lucas wasn’t about to change his plans completely. Besides, having a reason to go out into the cold again would sit at the back of his mind and distract him from the task at hand. That and if he left the bike it would probably freeze in place and be irreparably damaged. He wasn’t about to take any chances that would make life more difficult later on, that just wasn’t the way he worked anymore. Sort of. Maybe he was taking a chance like that by playing the stalwart mountaineering rescuer, but he’d rather face a little bit of difficulty for a short period of time than have to suffer even more guilt for the rest of his life.
But morality was a tricky thing to deal with when you’d been wounded by it. In the end, he didn’t know where he fell philosophically. He was still the ‘good’ man he always tried to be, but one made weary and wary of the world around him. He was beaten and battered, both physically and mentally. A shadow of his former self. Maybe he’d reclaim his original identity eventually, but that was something to be done when he was finished healing. Would he ever be? Probably not, at the pace he was moving. But the internal debate was still something to keep his mind busy as his muscles strained against the weight of the motorcycle and as the cold wind finally started to be a bit more than an occasional nuisance. It was slightly more grounding than repeating first aid instructions over and over in his head, anyway. Maybe he’d have a good solid think about things later, to see if he could figure a few things out.
