If I found out that I was pregnant today
For background purposes: I am a 21 year old, Caucasian woman with a Bachelorās degree, working two part time jobs until I am able to open a Nonprofit.Ā
If for some reason, despite my every effort to prevent this, I found out today that I was pregnant, I would get an abortion immediately and without a second thought; the following, are my reasons why.Ā
1) Being a millennial, I am a member of the most educated generation to date, but also one of the worst paid. Our parents raised us to believe an education was essential and obtainable, their experience (if they had any) was that they could work 15 or so hours a week and pay all their bills, including tuition, while also having a savings account, but that is not the world we live in today. Since the 1980s, cost of living has increased by about 115%, college tuition by 500%, college textbooks by 1,120%, food by 244%, and medical expenses by 600% yet our median annual earnings are $2000 less than our 1980s counterparts. Meaning, I do not, nor will likely ever without serious governmental and educational reform, have the money to afford a child or assist in paying for a childās schooling when they come of age.Ā
2) Due to the recent power shift in our government--a republican elect as well as republican control of the house and senate--and their immediate efforts to repeal Obamacare without a replacement, 18 million people will immediately lose their health insurance--I repeat--without a replacement. Not only are they stripping an obscene amount of citizens of their vital healthcare, they are also pushing to make it harder for young adults to stay on their parents health insurance until the age of 26, meaning I could lose health insurance (and birth control) any day now, something less than ideal for expecting parents. With 18 million immediately effected by the repeal, the total of uninsured citizens is projected to continue skyrocketing to 32 million in ten years, with premiums for the insured also rising by 25% immediately, and by 100% in ten years. Which again, due to crippling college debt and minimal pay, I wonāt be able to afford insurance for myself, or a child, despite the fact that I am legally required to have it.Ā
3) The physical ability to create children, does not necessitate or qualify that we have them. I have never wanted children of my own, nor do I feel I would make a suitable parent. Due to my current and likely perpetuated financial state, we have already covered that it would be fiscally irresponsible for me to bring another child into this world, but thatās not the only reason I see myself unfit. I have suffered from depression and severe anxiety my entire life, stemming primarily from lack of self worth and body image issues, and frequently leading to self harm behaviors and suicidal attempts and ideation. Due to these habits and the likelihood of my loss of insurance (loss of access to stabilizing medication and counseling resources), I am fearful that in the case of a maintained pregnancy, I will be more likely to suffer from postpartum depression, potentially leading to the harm of myself and/or the baby.
TL;DR
Until the government reforms education, makes wages livable, and provides insurance and/or affordable healthcare, it would be irresponsible for me to bring a child I cannot afford into this world, only to perpetuate the cycle of procreation without regard for quality of life postpartum.Ā
