Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.

I guess my other question with intensifying the Shane Hollander eating issues is like. Shane is a fictional character he's not a real person who "has" an eating disorder. There's a narrative device being used to say something.

In TLG Shane's diet is a really blunt metaphor for his fears around aging and losing his competitive edge. There's maybe also something in there about how without Ilya to compete with on the Bears, Shane's competitive drive has turned inwards, since the only person he now has to measure himself against is himself (while Ilya's has converted to a self-sabotaging drive, to avoid the ego crush of continuing to fail even if he was trying as hard as Shane). There's also the implication that Shane takes psychological comfort from discipline when he's anxious about other things in his life.

But when people give him like college girl anorexia or food-centered OCD it's kind of like, what's the point...? Body image issues? Because he's afraid of looking too big, because that's unappealing to a male lover? Hate that sorry. Because he feels ugly for being a wasian man? Hate that more. Some kind of self punishment for being gay? Also not a fan. Is it just to say Shane is anxious and controlling? We get that already

Before the Dawn

I have a few notes on what inspired this piece, but the main word that best encapsulates it is “devotion”. I was going to title it that but then the colours and mood shifted and made me think of them being caught between morning twilight and the dawn.

I find this idea that Ilya is suddenly a different character in TLG really strange. He seems quite consistent to me? They both do actually, though they’ve had pretty big character arcs off screen esp with how they relate to their own queerness (Shane has dealt with a lot of his shame, as has Ilya—he no longer feels disgusted with himself when he thinks about their dynamic)

But like idk Ilya has always been an uncommunicative asshole that’s his whole thing. He’s not like sweet daddy dom in HR and then mysteriously a bad guy in TLG. The stuff people point to in HR—Ilya knowing Shane’s preferred drink—also show up in TLG, Ilya knows Shane’s order at the restaurant with Fabian before Shane does. He thinks about Shane very deeply—just look at the Christmas present.

But they’re no longer having dates months apart they’re trying to integrate their lives so we also see them losing their patience with each other and Ilya in particular lashing out because he’s struggling with his mental health overall. One minute he’s helping Shane order the next he’s griping about how Shane’s diet makes Christmas not fun. To me that strikes me as extremely realistic for a real relationship. People are like oh in HR Ilya makes Shane “feel seen” but in TLG he’s dismissive—in HR Ilya laughs at Shane coming out to him! What are we even doing here guys.

Ilya’s all over the place in TLG and I guess that does make him less appealing that in HR where we just get this sketch of a hot brooding guy from Shane’s POV but I don’t know I think that’s a lot more interesting
