Reasons I've put pupils in the hallway. (13 to 14yo. Usually a few minutes to calm down)

- a kid snapped her fingers at me to get me attention while I was helping someone else

- "miss? Are you a grandma yet?" (I'm 34)

- Throwing stuff through the classroom

- called me bro

- couldn't stop laughing (sent her out to cool off bc it was distracting the class)

- making fun of someone's glasses

- told another kid to "shut the fuck up" (I agreed but you know, that's my Job to say, not theirs)

Overall it's been exhausting but I'm having fun so. 🤷

I have this kid in my class that asks a lot of questions. Questions that aren't relevant to my lesson and stuff like that

Yesterday he had his hand up, and while walking past I just kinda, high fived him. It was hilarious bc he went like "no that's not what I wanted"

We've got a phone ban in schools for the pupils. It's from the government. Not just school rules, but actual legislation. Which means you are way more justified in confiscating phones.

I just confiscated one from a kid I don't teach and he said "are you a teacher" yeah dude. I'm not wearing the uniform am I.

In today's meeting the two straight white men complained about there not being enough focus on diversity in the lessons.

I guess it's easy to talk about LGBTQIA when it's not about you. But some of these kids will openly talk about beating gay people so maybe the LGBTQIA teachers don't really feel like constantly bringing it up. There's a reason teachers here go in the closet at work.

These kids today.

It's the last day before fall break and oh they were active.

I was absent yesterday bc of a doctor's appointment. So 4 kids didn't bring their book because "I thought you weren't gonna be here today"

Although I very clearly said I would be.

Then one kid didn't do any work, I asked his communication book and he refused to give it. Then he accused me of pushing a desk against him. Which I very obviously didn't.

It's exhausting bc often they aren't open to listen. They have their view and you'll end up having to defend having rights. So I don't. Unless I actually have the energy to do so.

Mid October

It's been exhausting, but I'm getting back into it. I feel like I'm starting to know the school better and get my footing a bit more. Tomorrow it's meetings all day and discussing pupils. So I'll be there from 8am until 5pm

I got some snacks and stuff. But I'm so not looking forward to it. Lowkey thinking of calling in sick on Friday. Bc it's ridiculous.

I'm just very busy constantly.

I got a birthday party Friday evening, visit my parents house Saturday, convention Sunday, work Monday. A very long day Tuesday followed by parent teacher meetings until 8pm. A hospital visit on Thursday. Then another convention on Sunday and then the next day I go to London and then when I get back a Halloween party that evening, a birthday party the next day, work a concert the day after and then rest up on Sunday so I can work on Monday and go to a concert Monday evening. And then we'll be november 4th.

And yeah. It's obviously things I've chosen to do but still. When the moments you think you can rest are suddenly filled up with unplanned extra work it gets annoying

Yesterday while teaching about continents, a kid refused to say "Montenegro". Bc of the second part of the word. And he didn't want to be called racist. I explained to him that it's not racist another kid said

"yeah, saying Nigeria isn't racist either dude"

Teaching. It's something.

I'm currently teaching about decibels and how to protect your hearing.

And let me tell you how it goes.

I ask a few questions

"what do you do when your phone gives the little warning that turning the volume higher will damage your hearing!"

Answer: they ignore it. All of them. Just turn it up louder.

When talking about not playing music out loud on public transportation they don't seem to understand why that's rude

"but why wouldn't other people want to listen to my music?"

I've tried to get through to them. No luck.

Today I had a test on the subject in a few classrooms. And yeah. A lot of kids failed.

There's a sentence where they have to complete it with the words safe and too long. A phrase literally taken from their books

"sounds under 75 decibels are safe. Anything louder you can't be exposed too long. "

(it makes more sense in Dutch)

And so many kids wrote down words that don't even make a correct sentence???

They'll be "anything louder you can't be exposed hearing damage/your ears/fireworks"

Honestly. It's a good thing I love my job bc I can understand why do many people quit.

1) Vaping is confirmed to cause cancer. Vaping coats the lungs with toxic substances, such as heavy metals and benzene, which are known to cause cancer

2) Many vapes contain diacetyl, which, when inhaled causes popcorn lung, or scarring of the lung

3) Ultrafine particles, when being inhaled, can be lodged in the trachea (not good!)

4) Ultrafine particles can also constrict the arteries in the lungs potentially causing A HEART ATTACK

5) Vaping is relatively new. Not much studies have been done in comparison to tobacco. Plus, the vaping companies are powerful people. There is a large chance that they are purposely downplaying and even burying any evidence that vaping is harmful - just like the tobacco companies before them. They do not care about you, or your health, or the truth. They only care for money

E-cigarettes are so poorly regulated it's ridiculous. Even vapes that claim to be nicotine free still may contain enough to get you addicted. They've been linked to every issue that cigarettes have so don't believe the bullshit these companies claim about being a cleaner method. They may potentially work for adults to wean off cigarettes but this shit is so fucking bad for young people it's not even funny
