image description at explainXKCD:
explain xkcd is a wiki dedicated to explaining the webcomic xkcd. Go figure.
its a bit easier for astronomers
NO! Where’s the non-metals and metaloids?!
are they hydrogen or helium
oxygen, carbon, sulfur, xenon, iodine, neon, etc etc.
ooo okay i see the confusion. you're listing off a bunch of metals there
…. You’re breaking my chemistry nerd brain. Hhhuuuhhhh???
im an astrophysicist
but but, science is science?!
and different fields of science have different conventions and definitions for their unique contexts
More sure than I have ever been, boss 🥂
The fact people still climb Mount Everest is insane to me because not only is it extremely dangerous, expensive, and exploitative of the natives, it’s also completely optional
god dude i love that his legacy is now just shit like this

I should be doing more to appreciate the lack of marvel movies in today's popular culture. I once yearned for marvel movies to have this level of irrelevance. They used to feel almost ozymandian, like an empire that had no beginning and no end. and now tony stark iron man is naught but two vast and trunkless legs of stone.
There was a whole ass Star Wars movie that premiered last Friday and it got overtaken by a million dollar horror film on the following Wednesday, nature is healing.
It's kinda funny that whoever shot that health insurance CEO really solved the trolley problem irl.
gothic horror is when there's a location. cosmic horror is when there's an unauthorized fucking Thing. folk horror is when you're outside.
counterpoint
cosmic horror is when the Thing is Not Familiar, the Location Makes No Fucking Sense, and the Outside is BIG.
gothic horror is when The Thing is Of Your Own Making, the Location has a Deeply Bloody History, and the Outside is Wet and Cold and Is Caging You In.
folk horror is when the Thing Should Be Familiar, But Is Not, the Location Should Be Pleasing, But Is Not, and the Outside is Trying Very Hard To Kill You
Who deserved to live more?
The Romanovs (entire royal family circa 1917 including the kids)
Harambe the gorilla
A polling group that never read accounts of of the children were executed.
oh my god Harambe had kids?
It's so obvious that a lot of people on here are inexplicably convinced that bad books are a recent invention
This is the money Marge. Reblog for good fortune
when i was a kid i decided that killing people was bad therefore war was bad therefore the military was evil. and adults would tell me it's more nuanced than that and i would understand when i grew up. well i'm a grown up now and idk i still think that killing people is bad and war is bad and the military is evil
truly there are only so many words
