The largest female Arvok was sure he had ever seen. Her hide boasted rich shades of burgundy, red, orange, and yellow, highlighted with fine rivers of acid green along her back, her wings and neural whips tipped with burnished purple. Those eyes of hers were a warning, four glowing beacons of death.

Okay folks, I did it! Stardust and Orionis are both COMPLETED! The first main stories for Gaia and Tsu'tey are out in full for your viewing pleasure!

However, I'm sure anyone who's looked at the series has noticed I haven't marked it as Completed yet. And that's because I am currently working on a number of romance serial-style shorter fics that will help us bridge the 16 year gap between Avatar & ATWOW!

Up next: Meissa (Stardust III), which will be Norm and Mutxuk's little love story (featuring baby Spider as he was always meant to be: LOVED)! I recommend folks subscribe to the series itself for when that drops, as I'm going to try and drop the completed fic after I finish with my upcoming moves 🥰

I must tell you of my great blunder- stardust was the first avatar fic I read and despite watching Avatar 2009 a bazillion times, when I saw Tsu’tey’s name written my brain pronounced it as “ Toot- sie” and despite now (and for much time) knowing that is not how it is pronounced..l my brain just says tootsie Every. Single. Time. I read his name. It does not affect how wonderful I find your fic but I tried telling my friend about it and she was like”you read a serious fic and love a guy named Tootsie?!” .. no worries she has now read and loved both fics but I thought you might think it’s funny

Let me tell you, I was like this for a solid 5 minutes after reading this:

you will never catch me complaining about an actress on a tv show having an imperfectly concealed pregnancy or a character going on a sudden trip somewhere while her actress is on maternity leave. so many actresses (and women working in any other field) are fired, punished and pressured into making reproductive decisions for their employers' convenience & if i have to try a bit harder to suspend my disbelief then that's absolutely what i'm going to do if it means people are getting to exercise reproductive & bodily autonomy without punishment

My favorite writing of this was how Star Trek DS9 handled Nana Visitor's pregnancy. It felt out of character for her character (Kira Nerys) to get pregnant and it's the semi-utopian future, so presumably birth control works quite well and abortions are easily available. Solution: another female character gets pregnant, is injured in an emergency situation, and Kira agrees to act as surrogate. They effectively wrote this entire story line well enough, with implications for the dynamics between Kira and the biological parents, that I didn't realize until later that the actress was actually pregnant. I thought it was just an interesting plot line.

Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.

Including (sigh) the em dash.

There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.

A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.

No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.

You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.

Defend the em dash.
