It was a hunch. He told himself that, insisted to himself. The knot in his stomach, the increased ache in his always aching heart; watered doubt where doubt had already seeded. Since he’d been cursed, since the dark magic had been quarantined in his right eye; he felt different. It wasn’t just that he’d lost part of his sight. He sometimes felt that he had gained something after the incident. Gained something he didn’t yet understand, and didn’t want to understand.
This unsettling feeling led him to the moonlit path. He was looking for students out past curfew. He’d found several already and scowled when he found another pair; the two locked in an embrace under a tree just off the path. He moved silently. Moonlight gave his white dress shirt a haunting glow, the undone bowtie that rested around his neck and hung down onto his chest fluttered in the night sea breeze. The same wind pulled his hair from where he intended it to rest.
He watched the pair momentarily, hoping to increase the shock and embarrassment by getting as close as possible until they finally noticed him. They were doing something wrong; breaking rules, that is. There was nothing wrong or bad about what the two happened to be doing; when they were doing it was the problem. However as Seunghyun observed for a few more moments he got the distinct impression that only one of them was enjoying what was going on…
He didn’t even get a chance to speak up before the larger of the two noticed him. Seunghyun was taken aback at the desperation the larger exhibited in his attempt to flee. Seunghyun took a step back so he wasn’t actually bowled over, looking over his shoulder as the student fled and left his partner in crime to fend for himself.
Seunghyun looked back to the one who was left behind, a deep frown on his masculine features. The man who’d interrupted Kyungsoo’s assault doesn’t look like a professor, that’s for sure. So why would Kyungsoo believe him to be one? He looked wild and roguish, like some kind of fantasy off the cover of a romance novel; a pirate theme tale that housewives would swoon over between loads of lights and darks. Appearance aside, the man’s sheer presence radiated power. Impressive height, broad shoulders, muscular frame, intimidating expression; he emanated strength and control.
The boy in front of him seemed the complete opposite. Seunghyun surveyed him coldly, taking in each detail with his good eye; that eye lingering on the boy’s swollen, bee-stung lips. He didn’t know many students yet, but this one, he felt compelled to do some checking on. Seunghyun blankly regarded his flushed cheeks, his disheveled clothing, and the polite bow. Did he think he’d just let him go on his way? Seunghyun caught a strong whiff of alcohol as he lurched forward to try to leave and realized the problem was more serious than he’d initially thought.
"Not so fast…" the stranger growled, deep voice a shock upon first hearing it. He takes a step forward, positioning himself in the center of the path making the inebriated student’s escape impossible. Honestly, he wasn’t sure the student would even be able to maneuver around him if he tried to run. Seunghyun suddenly had the mental image of the young boy attempting to escape, but stumbling into his arms instead and all the venom left him.
He heaved a gruff sigh, shaking his head slightly. “Alcohol,” he growled. “Is for enjoyment in moderation; it’s to be savored. It’s not something to abuse. It’s not something you should waste on trying to forget things or blocks things out…if you continue to use it in such a manner, you’ll only create more things you want to forget,” the stranger lectured softly.
Seunghyun’s gaze was unwavering, inescapable. He lifted a large hand and clasped the student’s shoulder, squeezing it briefly before he released and fingertips trailed up his shoulder and across his jawline, lifting the boy’s hanging head. “Did he hurt you?" he whispered.
