So this is just a PSA, y'all should never sign a contract until you read it. I’m talking in rl right now. I just got through reading my employee handbook/service contract and my bosses slipped in a lot of bullshit like telling me I can’t complain about my job on social media, demanding I work off the clock in the name of good service, expects me to show up on time during inclimate weather, and considered disability or religious accommodation a direct threat to the company.
These are all things I took issue with and brought to my employer for further discussion before signing the contract. Most of my coworkers signed without reading, treating it like an internet terms of service contract.
Tl;dr real life is serious shit, lawyers write contracts to protect your employer FROM YOU, read contracts before you sign them - fucking ARGUE about contracts before you sign them
Also important to note, and something my bf has repeated to me many times: a contract is a negotiation until it is signed, and YOU ARE ALLOWED TO AMEND IT. Tech companies often put some bs in there about “we own everything you make while you work for us” which broadly applied also means anything done on your own time. He always ALWAYS does write-in amendments with initial and date to state that they only own things done FOR the company, on company time, because there have been companies that enforced that bullshit when somebody had a personal side project the company decided they wanted to steal. There’s only one company that threw a fit at his attempts to amend it and he considered that a huge red flag and refused to sign, turned down the job.
Never. EVER. Sign shit without reading it. Also: if your prospective employer won’t let you take the thing home to read before you sign it and says you need to sign it then and there THAT IS A RED FLAG. The job I had that turned out to be abusive as shit was like that. Every other job I’ve been able to bring the contract home to my parents to have a more experienced set of eyes on it. It’s also common practice in some fields to have one’s attorney look over it before signing. So never let them tell you that you can’t look over it with someone else. That’s a fat load of shit. For “lower level” jobs they may not accept amendments to the contract but if they won’t even give you the proper time to read it over, they’re trying to pull some bullshit on you and you’re going to regret it if you sign. Even if there’s nothing bad in what you signed it’s an example of how they are going to treat you while you’re there. Take it to heart and run like fucking hell.
Please also tell your coworkers. Inform others. Tell everyone. Please, for the lovee of everything TELL PEOPLE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO DO THESE THINGS.
Companies BANK on the fact you’re not going to read it. Then they slip in shit like ‘you can’t talk about your wages’ because they want you to keep quiet, so thy can pay that guy six bucks, and pay the guy over there fifteen and pay you eight. They want you to accept it all blindly. PLEASE DON’T STAY BLIND.
Yes, I’ve lost out on jobs because I wanted to read it and they didn’t want me to. Or they wanted m to resign and I said no to to the things they added that I pointed out were unfair and borderline illegal.
Read shit. Tell everyone else to read shit. BE INFORMED.
Absolutely 100% good advice ☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼
Never ever ever sign shit without reading and re-reading it! Take it home, show it to someone more experienced, if you can, show it to a lawyer. A contract is supposed to work for both sides. A company in Toronto tried to make me sign a contract with clause that in event of me leaving the job I will not work in a similar position anywhere in Ontario. Yeah, right, not enforceable in court, dudes, you can’t prevent me from making a living. Read the shit and don’t let them intimidate you.
I have line-edited contracts before signing on multiple occasions. If you line edit something out of the contract (cross out and initial + date), it no longer applies to you. If the employer co-signs the contract afterwards it’s official. If they didn’t bother to read through your line edits that’s on them.
The Scooby-Doo Project (1999)
fun fact this special scared so many kids so fucking badly (b/c the blair witch aspect was played weirdly straight) that CN never aired it again
you’re telling me this is real and not a shitpost
I seriously thought this shit was fake until I looked it up
that one time a parody of a fake found footage film is believed to be fake until footage is found.
i found an extended version of the one above in which scrappy is inexplicably out in the woods and the gang, rightly, is scared shitless by him
Oh my god i saw this as a kid 😭

I don’t think Fortnite is to blame for kids nowadays not reading…
That’s the joke. It’s the authoritarian overbearing parent.
He was being sarcastic lol
Reminded me of these
That violin one hit close to home.
I remember doing homework once, asked my grandmother if she was proud of me. “Do some thing for me to be proud of.” That hurt.
That comic up there – I witnessed almost that exact scenario. Teacher wanted the kids to all pick books. One kid spots something on the shelf and gets visibly excited. Pulls it out and starts reading. Teacher sees it, snatches it off him and tells him that this is a book for 8 year olds (the kid was 15ish) and tells him to get a book more appropriate for his age. Kid slouches around the shelves for about 10 minutes, finally picks up a book at random and sits in his chair tucking the edges of each page into the binding to make that looped-page look. He didn’t read a word. He sat there and did this to his book for the remainder of the reading session:
He had been genuinely excited about the 8 year old book he’d picked up. It was a new one in a series he used to read as a younger kid. He’d been actively sitting and reading, and then he was embarrassed in front of his classmates, told off for reading a kids book, and voila. He lost all enthusiasm for reading anything else that day.
What’s worse? That kid had been hit by a car like a year and a half earlier. Severe brain trauma. Had to re-learn a lot of basic things, like how to speak and how to read.
An 8 year old book would have been perfect for him. Easy enough to read that it would have helped rebuild his confidence in his own reading ability. A book meant for 15/16 years olds? A lot harder to read than a book for 8 year olds. Especially if you’re recovering from a relatively recent brain injury.
And yeah, the teacher knew all about his brain injury, and the recovery. He just seemed go be of the opinion that the kid was 15, so he should be reading books for 15 year olds, irrespective of brain injury.
Reading this thread I’m reminded of Daniel Pennae’s The Rights of the Reader, which can be found in a lot of bookshops and school libraries:
The child speaking at the bottom in Quentin Blake’s distinctive spiky handwriting is saying ‘10 rights, 1 warning: Don’t make fun of people who don’t read - or they never will’
I still to this day remember getting yelled at for teaching myself cursive and being told that I wasn’t allowed to have that skill yet.
I was in 1st Grade.
❗AVOID THESE PEDOPHILES AT ALL COSTS! ❗
I was scrolling through Tumblr and came across a post of KNOWN PEDOPHILES ON TUMBLR (many of which have or want to rape actual children/minors)
THERE ARE ACTUAL PEDOPHILES ON TUMBLR TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH MINORS ON TUMBLR
PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST THIS LIST AND KEEP OUR MINORS SAFE

Lets fucking roast this shit out of em guys!
Just gonna say this again.
DO NOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM INTERACT WITH THEM. JUST BLOCK/REPORT.
okay I’m just gonna look at all of these real quick it took like 15 minutes goddamn
as of january 22nd, 2021, only @/a-chubby-manatee is active (I looked and they seem to just be an art blog, but I blocked them just in case since they’re on the list)
so yeah! this isn’t as relevant now, but I’d say block that blog and be careful, guys!
Some guy just mansplained space to an actual fucking astronaut.
tfw correcting misinformation is written off as mansplaining
tfw when idiots on tumblr who know jack shit about thermo assume the dude is ‘correcting misinformation’ when actually he’s dead ass wrong. ‘Spontaneous’ is a scientific term - it means a reaction with a negative Gibb’s free energy, i.e. a reaction that will occur without an external energy input, i.e. water boiling because of low atmospheric pressure. Spontaneous is absolutely the correct term for what she’s observing, and that is ‘simple thermo’, and this is ‘correcting misinformation’.
Have a nice day.
THE PROPRIETOR OF MY LOCAL ANTIQUE MALL IS THREATENING MASKLESS PEOPLE WITH A BASEBALL BAT, MY FUCKING KING
review I just left after buying $150 worth of records there :)
op where is the store
the AntiQue mall
violence is not bad especially when you’re a little old man selling antiques for your livelihood and people keep threatening your life by attempting to infect you with a deadly virus
Just a reminder that declawing is mutilation. I’m not being dramatic, it’s an amputation. Multiple amputations in fact because you are taking the distal part of their toes off.
Just to give people a little visual representation of the human-equivalent to cat declawing. The red dotted lines are the lines of amputation.
In order to remove the claw, the entirety of the distal phalanges must be amputated. Distal phalanges, for those of you not overly familiar with anatomical terms, is the fancy science way of saying YOUR GODDAMN FINGER TIPS.
So yeah, maybe keep that in mind next time you consider getting a cat and/or start despairing over some scratched furniture.
I have found that many cat owners have no idea how inhumane this procedure is. Please, never declaw your cats. It can cause brutal arthritis and behavioral changes down the road, and I can promise you no furniture is worth the pain it causes your cat. There are tons of humane alternatives to declawing.
This ignores the myriad of other reasons beyond “scratched furniture” people get their cats declawed
While not ideal, it is certainly infinitely more humane than putting them in a gas chamber
And what good reason is there for performing multiple amputations on weight bearing appendages? Scratching people? Declawing cats makes them more likely to bite because they can no longer defend themselves with their claws. Immunocompromised? Cool now you won’t get scratched but you’re gonna get bit which is significantly worse! Also a survey was done that showed that the majority of immunocompromised people with cats wouldn’t even consider declawing. So what about cancer in the digit? That’s not declawing, that’s amputating diseased bone. That’s not an elective procedure for human convenience, that’s an actual medical procedure. So again, what good reason beyond human convenience is there for performing a major surgery that has been proven to cause:
—Chronic pain
—Litter box issues
—Increased aggression
—Inability to perform a natural behavior
—Surgical complications
—Arthritis
Also your description of humane euthanasia for animals is very disturbing and completely inaccurate. Besides the fact that the complications listed above could easily lead to euthanasia, rehoming isn’t a bad thing. Responsibly rehoming a cat is far more humane than declawing. And a cat scratching furniture is far more likely to be adopted than a cat that bites or has litter box issues. A lot of rescues won’t even adopt out cats with litter box issues because no one wants them.
But please, continue to tell me, a veterinary professional, that there is a good reason for surgically amputating the equivalent of your cat’s fingertips.
@40ouncesandamule getting claw caps is much safer! Sure, you’ll have to replace them fairly often, but it’s worth it to not see your kitty in such pain.
@vet-and-wild how exactly do you go into veterinary school?
This isn't just an ownership issue either, its also a industrial vetrinary issue with purposeful lack of education. There are many owners who have gotten their cats declawed with little consultation and a lot of vetrinary prompting.
Here's an amazing doccumentary about the subject but i
I'm gonna warn you there's some medical proceedures depicted, but as far as animal rights activism it's a very down to earth and a medical based discussion and there's even a Steven Galaxy appearance.
They talk about state legislature and vetrenary agendas omitting explanation of the nature of the surgery, statistics of euthenizations due to behavioral changes because of these proceedures and further repercussion to declawing including blood infections and foot stones.
I love that while Jimmy Neutron generally meant well, he was such a huge, unbelievable asshole cunt in that fast food episode that that’s all we can think about years later.
The most vicious, biting deconstructions of a person ever written have been inserted into the mouth of a one-off fictional fast food manager
Actual good first-time college student advice:
Wear jeans/pants that “breathe” and bring a sweater, even if it’s scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna
Backpacks with thick straps are your friend! Messenger bags are cool and all but if you’re commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back
You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as you’re not disrupting the class. Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if you’re anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.
If you don’t like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE! It’ll only get worse from there!
If you can, take a class outside your major; it’s a good break from your expected studies.
You are in charge of your schedule. Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to ‘advise and guide’ but if you don’t like certain classes and you can substitute for others, that’s your choice.
Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.
Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!
Unless it’s a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook. Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online. Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually don’t give discounts). Use your best judgement on what you think you need.
Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and don’t have time to listen to them. It’s less rude and they’ll leave you alone.
The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates. They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study. And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.
You don’t need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!
If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if you’re too exhausted. Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!
Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!! Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed. Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time. Look into it if you need to!
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Anything.
Eat and stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle and snack to class.
All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.
It’s going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up. This WILL happen. You just have to make sure what you’re doing isn’t making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!
I did none of this and it bit me in the ass every time so this is EXCELLENT ADVICE.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE
Don’t let a mental health day turn into a mental health week because you will be so screwed.
Pay attention to the syllabus and do not lose it. A lot of professors put all of the assignment due dates in there and ONLY in there.
If your school has blackboard or moodle etc. CHECK IT. a lot of professors will only post certain info there and not talk about it in class
Check your student email account weekly. A lot of it will be unimportant junk but sometimes it’s the only way professors will communicate.
Check your student email multiple times DAILY.
THANK YOU. I’m so glad i have resources like this queued up in my ‘college’ tag bc honestly i was so stressed before
Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:
READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.
I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.
Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)
Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?
SO DO YOUR READINGS.
tfw someone calls you their friend for the 323,729,425th time
