Your character doesn't need to be likeable. They need to be legible. The reader needs to understand every decision they make even when it's wrong, even when it's ugly, even when they want to shake them. Likeable is easy and forgettable. Legible is what makes someone stay with you for years. Make the logic of every bad choice visible. The reader doesn't have to agree with it. They just have to follow it.

Mermaid mask spoilers under cut
There's kind of this weird thing going on with Gripp seeming? Jealous?? Bitter??? About how strong Mortuga was compared to him. It's also kind of present in the way he talks about Mortuga and Felica looking windswept and heroic and regretting inviting himself into their world, it's like their existence made him feel inadequate in comparison.
Every time he talks about Mortuga the vibe is laced with this sentiment somehow. The part where he accuses Mortuga of wanting to use the mermaid's tongue almost feels like he's trying to drag him down to his level in a way (I personally don't think Magnus was actually gonna use the mermaid's tongue because why the fuck would he leave the necklace key with Gripp if he was). Even though he himself admits that Mortuga rarely did things just to be selfish earlier.
Everything about this reeeksss of inferiority complex. Especially the several times he mentions his own previous cowardice.
It feels like the combination of Mortuga keeping things from him (under which definitely mainly the mermaid's tongue) and him being this guy Gripp considered stronger and braver and likely even a better person than himself in a way he could never hope to become created a lot of deadly resentment on his part
dude, this is really scary, and liminal as well. It's like the bathrooms
Not attracted to that character i just want him to experience being scared for his life and panicking
is there anyone who wants to talk to me about grimoire games. they are the best thing ever and I have NOBODY to talk to about them I can talk about anything and I can talk for hours DM ME NOWW im so feral about every character ever

MERMAID MASK ENDING SPOILERS BELOW!!!! BEWARE.
Okay so Godrik has this sprite animation here. And in the animation his thumb is like, rubbing over something. And at the time when I got to this bit I was kinda confused by it? Like it was the one animation where I couldn't parse out what was trying to be conveyed. HOWEVER, IVE COME TO A REALIZATION ☝️
ITS THE SCAR. HE'S TOUCHING THE SCAR WHILE TALKING ABOUT THE DEAREST SELENA VOYAGE BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT IT REMINDS HIM OF 😭.
Another thing, we know this scar has to be incredibly painful. Magnus literally wore only half a jacket because the scar continued to hurt even years after the mermaid encounter. How in the hell Godrik is able to 1. Wear a damn shirt over it and 2. Touch it THOUGH the shirt periodically without passing out is its own damn mystery unto itself.
is this anything
minor mermaid mask spoilers vvv
mermaid mask SPOILERS !!!!!!
god. idk how to word this very well but the fact gripp made sure that everyone got at least some closure so they weren't left blaming themselves (or eachother) for everything that happened and especially for magnus's death before escaping on his whole suicide mission. him reassuring symmetry especially that she shouldn't blame herself with the timeline in mind (her being one of the additional guests he'd known the longest, zephyr taking her in from an abusive guardian etc. you could make some arguments/hcs of him being Bonus Dad to her when it was just the 4 of them in the sub but anyways) he's aware it's entirely him. he doesn't shift the blame to any others, he doesn't even completely blame magnus by the end either, despite the amount of building resentment and tension that drove him to drag him into this voyage in the first place (and later murder him)
i dont knowww it says so much to me about his character and makes his unhealthy obsession with the mermaid all the more fascinating . he was on this entire desperate search driving him insane and definitely was dragging magnus down with him, but he never meant for everyone else to get caught up in it like this. and even though he still follows through endangering everyone in the process, in his mind, this event was inevitable, he HAS to do this. he HAS to find her, speak to her. even if it's the last thing he ever knows. there was no other option. just the way it's meant to be. and in his view of limited choices, he could at least put everyone "at peace" as much as he could before metaphorically steering them straight into the sun.
he did still care for the others, though showing it very last in an incredibly warped sort of way. idk. i dont even know if im onto anything here i need to play it through again but guh . godrick gripp you fucking freak of a man i have to shake you around. they call him gripp because im gripping him with a force hydraulic presses could only dream of

!POSSIBLE MERMAID MASK SPOILERS UNDER CUT!
Lil thing I noticed (mermaid mask spoilers)
I was just watching a let's play after playing it myself and it's fucking fascinating to watch Gripp dig into his own past and memories in order to come up with a believable lie.
When you ask for his statement, he says he heard the murder happen above him, which was likely the truth, but instead of telling you he went to the control panel to tilt the ship he tells you he ran and his away in his room out of "cowardice," the same descriptor he used to describe why he hadn't traveled like he wanted to or why he let the ship's wheel drag him to the surface.
We all know he didn't actually hide away in the engine room, but when he was lying to us, it's increadibly likely he was thinking about the moments where he did hide and run away and using the self hate and shame born from those moments to make the shame of him hiding from the murderer even more believable.
Idk if he did that on purpose or not, but it sure as hell made me believe him lmao.
(I need to write an essay about Gripp and his self worth issues dear god.)
More mermaid mask spoilers I've had more thoughts about that one fucker go play the game
The movie magazine- "is there really only two characters?" Because he was there, there was three characters in the original tale the book and in turn movie was inspired on, Felicia, mortuga, and gripp. Yet the movie only has belicia, Markus, and death.
And I can't word it quite right, but he cares about the people on the ship. He worries for sinthia, he knows that contract wasn't meant for her, because it was meant for him, and despite craving the mermaids mask he doesn't want her to waste away down here. He mentions how sym blames herself and shouldn't, that it was bad timing. That's not even including the end part, where he makes sure grimm tells everyone the truth about each matter, so they don't stay stuck in their misconceptions about the death or their own blame in the matter. When you ask him about mortuga he makes sure to say he wasn't a selfish man, admitting numerous times him hiding the mask from him was likely done to protect him, to protect everyone.
Oh and the blueprints!! When you show him the blueprints and question how mortuga got it, he stumbles a bit, he has to quickly think of a lie that would work because he's the one who got it, he says the shipyard and quickly tackles on an "I assume" because any more confidence might tattle on him being the actual one who bought it. He knows exactly how mortuga got that submarine, exactly how it was ramshackled together, how it was paid for. Because he did it. Ougough this game man-
