using code when lifting with a friend
to preface this, i would like to say that I have two rules when it comes to shoplifting with friends. 1, we have to always speak in code when we’re out, and 2, if you’re going to put something in your bag, sleeve, waistband etc, we have do it AWAY from each other so it doesn’t look planned. don’t make me look guilty by proxy or whatever.
Using code to talk is helpful when you’re out with a friend. Once you get inside, you’re pretty much stripped of getting to say “I wanna lift this” because, well, that’s how you get kicked out of a store. Using these phrases have helped me, because they’re just normal things i would already say. As well as not looking suspicious, you also have to not SOUND suspicious. It also has to sound like you have intentions of buying stuff there, you know? It’s also more convenient to talk to each other directly. You don’t always know the exact layout of a store. You don’t know how many cameras are in there, or if there are LPs there, or if the manager has decided to do mandatory bag checks that day for shits and giggles. So, because you’re entering this territory possibly unfamiliarly, your communication with your friend is essential. You cannot just whisper to each other, cause that looks sus as hell. When you say stuff that sounds normal, you look more normal in turn. So, please enjoy mine and my friends’ secret code language for sh0pl1ft1ng.
We should get [Person’s name] this for [his/her/their] birthday - “I’m gonna try to put this in my bag/sleeve now.”
[Person’s name] is waiting for us at [store/event/whatever] - “We have to go, like NOW”
How does my [article of clothing, such as jacket or pants] look? - “I put some stuff in my pockets, does it look obvious?”
We should go to walmart after this - “I think we’ve lifted enough, what do you say we leave?”
You should sleep over tonight - “I think the manager is watching me, so be cautious and if we need to, leave.”
These are so cute, my gf/bf would love them - Just another way of saying “I like this, i’m gonna try to put it in my bag/sleeve.”
