Scaramouche is worried. Time passes, and yet, what has *really* changed in the past months?

A flash of red light behind Xiao, he looked behind and sawā¦himself?
The Adeptus' eyes widened when he sawā¦himself? But perhaps with a blue tint to his hair, rather than red.

But a small flame still flickered in his chest.
Revenge.
That was why he was still here, after all this time, he reminded himself.
He wanted revenge.
And he would not let this flame turn to ash until it had engulfed everything.

There's something so sweet and sad about the fact that the first question Peeta asks Katniss to establish genuine friendship is "what's your favourite colour?", which is a pretty typical childish question. It shows that they really are still so young.
i don't think it needs to be associated with childhood, i think it's a lovely question to ask someone. it says that you care about something small and insignificant about them. you can even use it to accurately choose the colour of something you're making or buying for them later.
what a strange phenomenon it is when you've been friends with someone for years and you suddenly realise you don't even know their favourite colour.
i agree that i love that peeta asks this, and i think it does show how young he is in a way, because this is a question most do associate with kids on a playground, and he might too, but he asks it anyway because he knows it sounds a bit stupid in the context but is nice.

the earthsea books literally have something for everyone the first book is about bisexual wizard boy going to wizard boy school and going on the traditional bildungsroman, the second book is about wizard boy helping a priestess girl escape a cult and go on her healing from religious trauma journey, the third book is about wizard boy begrudgingly in his middle age becoming the merlin to earthseaās arthur to help the once and future king go on HIS heroās journey, the fourth book is about how the priestess girl from the second book is now a widowed milf who adopted a dragon and seduced the now very depressed wizard man with sheer old woman rizz, the fifth book is fun little short stories about crazy shit that happened in all different times of earthsea, and the sixth book is about the wizard man becoming a house husband and having his now wife and kid handle the big issues in earthsea, and the whole time ursula k le guin is like yeah tolkien is cool i guess but what if gandalf and all of middle earth wasnāt white and they were on boats the whole time and also the wizards have a Begone Thot incel spell
in order to truly get rid of misogyny in fandoms we need to treat girl characters the same way we treat guy characters. Say youād hit her with your car. Say you want to see her crying and trying and failing to keep her emotions hidden. Say you want her to get worse. Say you want to chew on her like a squeaky toy. For feminism
I think that would be so much funny. He wakes up on a remote beach in Jamaica and he only speaks/understands Brythonic and Medieval Latin. Locals assume he was a tourist who fell from a cruise ship or received a head injury and floated away from a resort. The authorities cannot match his description to any missing persons reports and his fingerprints and DNA produce no hits on INTERPOL. They suspect he may be Welsh or French because the language he speaks resembles Welsh or Breton but France and the UK both state he is not a citizen of their country. Stateless and deeply confused, he is taken in by the community near the beach where he was found, being cared for by a number of local families and doing odd jobs. He slowly learns English and adjusts to the contemporary world, uncertain if his belief that he is the legendary King Arthur was formed by whatever traumatic event caused him to end up Jamaica or if he is actually King Arthur and Prydain is in eminent peril. Mysterious letters from Morgan begin to reaffirm his belief he is King Arthur. He must choose between staying in Jamaica and continuing the happy life he has made for himself or finding a way to get back to Britain without any documentation.
He gets to Britain and everyone expects him to sound like a posh noble Englishman because that is the picture Malory painted but he prefers to speak Welsh and when he has to speak English, he speaks with a thick Jamaican accent.
"i know this show was made for children but i enjoy it too." > awesome and cool. watch whatever you want forever.
"i know it LOOKS like it was made for children but its SECRETLY for us. calling it a kids show is an insult cause kids could never understand these THEMES and EMOTIONS. we're the TRUE fans." > i dont think i trust your opinions. you seem lame as fuck.
i think scara and pantalone don't like each other but i think it should be for wrong reasons only. pantalone is like babe you have to leave that guy all he does anymore is piss you off so bad you get brain damage which is an objectively funny thing to say when dottore A. has run psychological torments on scara no one has ever thought of before and B. will get offended at any implication he has emotions. and scara is like dude you have to get rid of that guy he's just a immortalitygold digger which is an objectively funny thing to say when dottore A. is practically pantalone's sugar baby at this point and B. wouldn't care bc he sees all relationships as transactional anyway. meanwhile dottore's never gonna leave either of them bc he imprinted so hard on scara he still thinks they're two members of the same endangered species, & pantalone is the only person in teyvat who likes him enough to go with him to the opera
early days when neither of them are harbingers yet and our puppet guy looks down on feofan bc he didn't choose of his own will to be part of dottores experiments and inversely feofan looks down on him bc he did.... mmm
#but also. thinking about pantalone talking his way off the operating table and about scara talking his way onto it.#thinking about feofan being completely human. sold as a disposable test subject to die#and having to negotiate his way out with nothing but his words#vs. scara being a divine vessel and being a 'high-value' subject to dottore that he couldn't just easily discard#feofan being acutely aware that him and dottore don't have an equal relationship and how his life depends on how āinterestingā he is#in comparison to the canon relationship now where they're on relatively equal standing and feofan had Dottore's life in his hands in 6.6#vs. scara being able to tell himself at first it was equal and transactional or that at least he was getting the most out of it and then#getting to watch that belief get beaten in over the years. but also being too deep into it and too insecure and angry to back out now#and all the while he's watching as This Guy (who's a mortal! a human!) is getting actually treated on an equal level and like a Person#by dottore as time goes by and as scara becomes more and more disposable to him instead#-> slight sidebar. but it's really interesting to me how their work in the fatui is viewed in-universe too.#pantalone is definitely known to be Connected to dottore but it's widely regarded on the basis that they're equals. pantalone's actual work#and accomplishments are seen as existing outside of dottore and are usually viewed as his own personal merit#meanwhile scara and signora's conversation in inazuma lives in my head rent-free to this day. the way both his defining characteristic#and work in the organization of a) having unsealed powers from an archon and b) being able to go into the abyss and not die immediately#or at least get repaired if he did were Both entirely dependent on dottore#thinking about the point of whether they chose to be here or not#with pantalone's hatred towards divinity vs. the way scara's voiceline specifically focuses on pantalone being a human. it makes me so sick
I AM KISSING YOU DIRECTLY ON THE FUCKING MOUTH OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. thwis is literallyy. oh my god
So a couple days ago i accidentally wrote myself a rambling little meta essay about Dottolone vs Dottoscara power dynamics which is kind of what got my brain on this whole kick in the first place and i'm going to paraphrase some of it here bc u just neuron activated me but it makes me ill, yeah.
like, pantalone was literally sold to dottore as a disposable test subject, he had no choice in it whatsoever, meanwhile scaramouche walked into the fatui and into dottore's experiments of his own volition. but 500 years later, pantalone is clearly the one with more agency in his situation than scaramouche.
for one thing, pantalone's disregard for his own well-being made him less controllable, while scaramouche's made him more. pantalone doesn't particularly care about immortality for its own sake, so dottore's main form of leverage over him kind of loses its meaning, and we can only conclude that pantalone keeps hanging out with him because he wants to. in fact dottore actually has to hound after him for his health.
but scaramouche's disregard for his well-being only makes him more exploitable, given that his unique physical form is the basis for both what dottore wants out of scaramouche and what scaramouche wants out of dottore (ie, to transcend his body's limitations and become a god).
pantalone is also not the same kind of insanely maladapted about emotion that they both are. i think in the latter centuries he is definitely just letting dottore go through the motions of 'our partnership works bc i hold your life in my hands >:)' bc dottore would freak out if he had to confront the fact that they are genuinely People Who Like Each Other. out of these 3 pantalone is, imo, the only one willing to acknowledge emotional reality, which would confer on him a sort of soft power in the relationship as he actually understands all the motivations at play.
i think scaramouche and dottore had a more amicable relationship very early on, but that it didn't last for a... wide variety of reasons, one of them being that they are kind of the mathematically perfect individuals to trigger a lot of each other's issues. way too similar in some ways, and too different in others. and i think it turned into a vicious cycle made way worse by the power dynamics involved.
like as you say, YEAH: even as a harbinger, scaramouche's worth to the fatui is very dependent on dottore. and going by the convo with signora, people (at least, the harbingers) know it. while pantalone has become so independently powerful via his wealth that dottore is now somewhat reliant on him for funding.
so we have one guy who was human-trafficked into all this and one guy who got into it on purpose and several hundred years later it's the formerly-trafficked guy who has the less concerning relationship with Mr. Human Rights Violationstron 5000, and i truly find that so. very. interesting.
(as a final parting shot, from what we know of the timeline it's very likely that pantalone became a harbinger before scaramouche did. thinking about this torments me deeply)
#ASJKDFG YEAH. YEAHH! YOU GET ITT#pantalone being the most emotionally aware out of the three is SO INTERESTING. and that giving him power in the relationship.#something something about humanity#and the way pantalone's ideals about 'fairness' are central to that vs. scara & dottore's respective pursuits of divinity. fuckk#and the way that scaramouche's body and powers are the leverage in his transactional relationship with dottore!!#slightly ill about the way that dottore sees/projects separate parts of himself onto each of them#and how that affects the way he treats them differently#the way that what dottore valued in them (their body/inhumanity vs. their personality/ideals + humanity) shows#in what the crux of each relationship is and his treatment of each of them. it's so sick!!#love thinking about dottolone viscerally in the context of scara. abandoned over and over again and leveraging your worth#on the basis of your body and what you were supposed to and what you're wanted to be. and it STILL isn't enough.#anyone ever think about pantalone defying his fate vs. scara trying to 'restore it' (getting the gnosis and becoming a god)#thinking about them is so fun especially in the early days. i think feofan looked down on him so much it isn't even funny#and i think that scaramouche tried to electrocute him At Least once#and pantalone being a harbinger before scara is so??? god. don't do this to me. ESPECIALLY since pantalone becoming a harbinger#did probably have some of dottore's influence in the decision.#thinking about a scenario where scara tries to leverage or lean into the experiments more w/ dottore when he's focusing on pantalone.#because that's their main currency/focus in the relationship! look and remind yourself of what That Fucking Guy could never do for you.#i swear i don't even care about them that much in a shipping sense lol. throw them all in the blender#anyway really good post. thank YOU for activating my 'toxic unethical non-monogamy' and dottoscara neurons!!
listen i'm sorry to keep pulling u into the main post (& to make this mile-long thing even longer) but you just keep saying things that ive been rotating completely alone in my head for at least a month cuz like. YEAH!!!!!!!!! YEAH.
it is genuinely. GENUINELYYYY quite upsetting for me to think about. like i think a decent chunk of my initial resistance to dottolone was how viscerally distressing the whole thing is to think of from scara's pov. me being me, i eventually started pressing on that bruise and fixating on it because i love upsetting myself over fiction, but oh my god.
the timeline got a little muddled with the anomalous marrows but i still prefer to think that scara was there first, because it makes more sense to me from a character arc perspective and also because it makes the angst crunchier.
scara (not yet scara at this point in time but i'm gonna use it as shorthand) figuring that this is Just How It Is to have a close relationship with dottore. this is as good as it gets. this is how dottore treats people who are valuable to him. scara finding security and misplaced pride in being the Only One who can put up with dottore on a mental level as well as a physical one. the Only One dottore can get some sort of companionship from, even if their relationship is extremely dysfunctional.
and then along comes feofan.
i think scara copes really hard that his rship to dottore was/is still more valuable. he has more to offer, no one else truly Gets dottore the way he does, etc. but as feofan & dottore's relationship developed, scara had to confront that actually - the way dottore treats him ISN'T how things have to be. dottore IS capable of doing better. scara has to ask himself, why? why isn't he worth that? what the hell is pantalone - an insignificant mortal! - offering that makes him more deserving of it? it makes me. SO fucking ill to think about. i think perhaps scara tells himself that dottore defangs himself for pantalone. that scara is still the only one who sees the Real dottore. but... that's really just a cover for how awful it is to see.
i think there Are things dottore gets out of his relationship with scaramouche on an emotional level that he doesn't get from pantalone; for one, dottore is unable to really see himself as human, so he more easily finds kinship & solidarity with outcasted nonhumans like scaramouche and columbina (kind of what i was getting at with 'members of the same endangered species' in the OP). being around scara reaffirms these thought patterns in a way that is comforting, maybe even intoxicating at times. being around pantalone gently challenges them. i think feofan has to tread lightly w it so as not to set off a minefield, but i think deep down there is a part of dottore that *likes* how feofan recognizes a humanity in him no one else does.
also yeah. one of my very first thoughts when we learned more about dottolone/pantalone was "Oh scara has absolutely tried to kill this guy multiple times". i think in the early days there was a period of time when scara was obsessively trying to find a way to kill feofan and make it look like an accident.
feofan has never felt the need to reciprocate that effort bc he feels a Lot more secure in his relationship w dottore š„²
