Civil War if Joss Whedon directed it

I’m loath to give this any more exposure by reblogging it, but this is the kind of stupid kneejerk anti-Whedon bullshit that bothers me. Really? All you’ve shown is that you don’t understand his sense of humor. When the emotional stakes are high, he writes beautiful, spare, poignant dialogue, which is set into even starker (ha) relief by the surrounding lightness. Joss Whedon gave us “Did you mourn?”, “I remember a shadow,” “It’s a terrible privilege,” “If you walk out that door, you’re an Avenger.” The Captain America movies have their share of zingy one-liners, but none of them are as clever as the ones in The Avengers; and none of the dialogue in the other movies has the beauty of some of the dialogue in the Avengers movies. Does Joss Whedon fuck up sometimes? Yes. Does he sometimes overdo it, or misfire, with the humor? Sure. But his writing shows an artistry and originality, and a distinctive style, that most of the other Marvel movies, as fun and well-crafted as they can be, just don’t have.

There’s a reason people liked Whedon’s work before everyone on Tumblr decided he’s the devil; there’s a reason there are academic conferences on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Is he morally perfect? No. But his moral errors are considerably more forgivable than those of many past writers whose work we still appreciate because it contributed something unique, because it had spark, because it had spirit. I suspect that most of y’all don’t like the notion of the “genius,” especially when applied (as it typically is) to white men. I would apply it to Joss Whedon not in the usual contemporary sense (no, he’s not Shakespeare, and he’s not Nietzsche either), but in the somewhat milder sense, applicable to a broader range of artists, in which Kant uses it in the Critique of Judgment: an artist whose work shows spirit as well as beauty, expressing a very specific idea or feeling that couldn’t really be expressed any other way.

Go ahead, unfollow me. But I’m not going to change my considered aesthetic judgment because it’s presently unpopular on Tumblr.
