“Derek… Derek, please don’t go, okay? Just stay. You can’t just leave, we need you. We can’t make it without you, we need you. We need you, please. Please, just stay. Okay? Just listen to my heartbeat! Just listen! You know I’m not lying, you know I’m not lying, just stay here, please.”
Derek keeps staring down, trying to look stoic. An observant eye could see it’s clearly taking all of him to remain still and inexpressive. However, Stiles doesn’t notice anything, can’t notice anything, as tears of hurt, anger and panic start streaming down his face and he starts to yell.
“Say something! Don’t just stand there, say something! Look at me! Derek, look at me!”
Derek reluctantly, slowly looks up.
Stiles’s voice starts breaking down, all the anger dissipating, only the hurt remaining as he pleads:
“Please, Derek… Please? You know there’s a reason to stay. You… you know that, right? You know I can’t… Please? We need you.”
Stiles looks down. He wipes the tears from his eyes and then looks straight at Derek’s eyes.
“I need you. Derek, I need you.”
Derek’s stoicism starts to break. His mouth opens up just a little bit and there’s an obvious, painful sadness in his eyes.
“So please tell me there’s a reason for you to stay. Tell me… Tell me you… Don’t go.”
Derek swallows, inhaling deeply and regaining his blank expression. However, when he speaks his voice comes out just as small as Stiles’s.
Stiles just looks at him. Shock and disbelief on his face as Derek turns and walks toward the loft’s door. Derek’s expression completely changes as soon as he knows Stiles can’t see him, pain and sorrow marking his face as he leaves the one good thing that has happened to him in what feels like a lifetime. His eyes well up, but he doesn’t turn back, he just keeps walking until he’s through the door, closing it shut behind him without ever looking back.
Stiles is frozen at the spot. He doesn’t know for how long he stays there, simply staring at the door, unable to process what is happening. He’ll only remember eventually breaking down, sobs overtaking him as he falls to the ground in the middle of the empty room. He’ll never know the sounds he makes just add up to Derek’s own sobs and heartbreak as the werewolf hears them and drives away from all that he wanted but could never have.
