J. R. R. Tolkien on escapism in “The Lord of the Rings” (x)
“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape?…If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”

Why are we getting more Murderverse movies when we could be having fun with Napoleon Solo, the Red Peril and Little Chop Shop Girl?? What does Hollywood have against fun??
Let me guess, the scene from the trailer with Maz handing the lightsaber to Leia isn’t in the deleted scenes, is it?
Look, I love this movie so much, and I don’t hate JJ, but he made some weird decisions re Leia. I kind of think the Powers That Be don’t understand what people like about Leia as a character or her relationship with Han. Could it be as simple as that? We don’t want to see them separated and unhappy. We aren’t crazy about them being canonically absentee parents, to the point that their child up and joined a cult because of his abandonment issues.
Is it simplistic to say that maybe, in trying to make the movie more feminist and pay tribute to Leia’s girl-power popcultural legacy, they decided to give Han and Luke weirdly negative, cowardly roles–one runs away from his marriage, one runs away from mankind–to make Leia look stronger by comparison? Were they perhaps surprised to learn that fans were somewhat confused and disappointed to see their childhood heroes depicted this way? We already knew Leia was powerful, strong, and tough in the face of tragedy because it was depicted in the original movies. In fact, we wanted to see those emotions explored further, wanted to see Leia get a tiny bit more screen time. We didn’t have to put down two objectively Good Men, Han and Luke, to make Leia look resilient. The movie does such a fantastic job of making Rey well-drawn and complex without putting down Poe (a literal superhero) and Finn (who is not as technically skilled as Rey but holds his own in a fight and has an innate bravery and morality and is also very funny and loyal).
These concerns are more script-based than director-based, but here are some things that JJ could have done to mitigate these heavy, controversial character choices:
include the several Leia scenes he cut, such as the one where she, you know, leads an army and talks to her soldiers (this one is actually in the deleted scenes);
or, perhaps, the scene from the trailer where she holds her brother’s old lightsaber (her FATHER’s old lightsaber!!!)–the one that cut off Luke’s hand, which SHE literally had to tourniquet off right after it happened (think about it–that memory would be burned into her brain), while using the Force for the first time, while ALSO flying a spaceship under fire to rescue said brother, AND the last thing we heard in ROTJ was a promise that Leia would become even more powerful than Luke in the Force,
and MAYBE it would have been nice to get ONE HINT of any of that by allowing ten seconds of Carrie Fisher holding a lightsaber prop into a movie that runs approx 2 hrs 45 mins
Also: let Harrison and Carrie have a few more beats of that smiling, nostalgic chemistry they have in the behind the scenes videos. Make a joke about Luke or mention a happy memory of Ben, let them KISS (they literally did it just for fun at Comic Con or wherever), give them a subtle little twist on the I love you/I know line (“I missed you”/“I know,” “I still….”/“I know.” The possibilities were endless, you guys).
Give Kylo ONE second of reaction to any mention of his mother (Han literally could have said, “Your mother misses you” instead of “We miss you” and Kylo could have flinched, and that would have been more effective than ten scenes of exposition). This will probably be explored in later episodes, but I just wanted a HINT of it. Just a flash of anger or sadness in Kylo’s eyes for Leia.
Have someone tell Rey and/or Finn a cool story about Leia, because they both flip out about Han’s awesome reputation, and Rey practically does a cartwheel out of sheer joy when she hears Luke Skywalker’s name, but no one mentions Leia until they meet her on screen (Han mentions her to Maz and neither Finn nor Rey show any sign of recognition), and although Finn speaks to her with respect and Rey falls weeping into her arms, it might have been nice to have either of them–especially the 19-year-old female lead–be in AWE of the senator/princess/general who is still running the Galaxy thirty years after she saved it, who is singlehandedly trying to track down her missing bro The Last Jedi because she’s sorry he’s upset but yet again he is Her Only Hope, and who STILL has time to braid her hair into complicated hairdos that probably take her at least a half-hour every morning and she’s already a busy woman but she makes the time for it.
Okay, this got a little bit out of control, and I didn’t realize I felt quite so strongly about this until I started wondering where that deleted scene went, but the above still stands. A lot of this will hopefully be explored in eps 8 & 9, but that doesn’t undo the missed opportunities in TFA.

I’ve always had some serious, massive thoughts and feels about this scene where Obi-Wan watches the hologram of Anakin slaughtering the Jedi, kneeling at Palpatine’s feet, and everything else that followed.
To begin with, I don’t think Obi-Wan had any idea of what he was about to see. Yoda said he would only find pain if he watched, but Obi-Wan said he “had to know.” To me, he meant, “I have to know how my son/brother/BFF/lover/whatever died.” Because such was Obi-Wan’s faith in Anakin Skywalker that it never occurred to him that Anakin would commit such atrocities. In his mind, Anakin’s body is lying somewhere in the Temple, surrounded by over a dozen dead clones and the younglings he was seeking to protect. He needed to see Anakin’s fate so that it would be real for him, otherwise he’d always cling to some delusional hope that Anakin was somehow still alive.
Then he sees the truth, watches Anakin slaughter their brethren, but what next catches my attention is the moment he watches Anakin kneel before Palpatine. My headcanon is that Anakin has always had some serious issues about kneeling before anyone, going back to his life on Tatooine. Watto may not have been the type to have Anakin or Shmi kneeling in subservience, but Anakin very likely witnessed other slaves being forced to do so before their owners, and it was something that sickened him. That feeling was likely something he carried over into his life as a Jedi, and he may have actually been able to communicate it to Obi-Wan on some level. Hence why Obi-Wan looks like he’s trying not to vomit as he stares at Anakin on his knees before Palpatine. He knows that Anakin despises that sort of posture and behavior - so what has happened to make Anakin go back on that? How did things change so much since he left for Utapau?
This is quite possibly the origin of Obi-Wan blaming himself for all that happened. Obi-Wan clung so tightly to his faith that everything was hunky-dorey that he didn’t see that something was clearly wrong with Anakin, that he needed help. He knew that there was the problem of asking Anakin to spy on Palpatine (see the novelization where he basically tells the Council off for being morons on the subject), but he had no idea of the other issues that were crushing Anakin under their collective heels (the nightmares of Padmé’s death, etc), in part because Anakin didn’t confide in him but also in part because Obi-Wan did not ask. Fanon likes to think that Obi-Wan figured out a long time ago about Anakin and Padmé (because subtle they are not), but he never came out and said anything about it. Perhaps he came to believe that if he had actually sat Anakin down and talked to him, gotten him to share his burdens, then he would have been able to help Anakin before he drowned. We know Anakin did go to Yoda for help about Padmé but got the singularly unhelpful advice of “someone dies - have a party, you should, for one with the Force they are!”, but one would think that Obi-Wan’s advice might have been a little more practical, say something like “Have Padmé get checked out by a few healers, ones who specialize in pregnancy and childbirth, to head off any potential problems.” And that’s just one example.
To continue: Obi-Wan watches his brother/BFF/lover/whatever systematically slaughter their people, and then is told by Yoda that he must destroy him to save the Republic (never mind the fact that the Republic was dead long before all of this went down, but that’s a rant for another time). Yoda maintains that Anakin is already dead, and all that remains is Darth Vader who is basically possessing Anakin’s corpse. In all honesty, I think Obi-Wan kind of went on autopilot at this point, which is why he sounded so wooden and vacant when he kept telling Padmé what a threat Anakin now was. He couldn’t bring himself to believe it, not then.
In all honesty, I don’t think Obi-Wan really believed that this was all happening until he saw Padmé be Force-choked on Mustafar. Because the real Anakin would have sooner gnawed off his remaining flesh arm than do anything to harm Padmé, and Obi-Wan knew that. That’s why he looked so utterly horrified when he stared down at Padmé’s crumpled form (besides the fact that, you know, she had just been choked and that could very well kill her and her baby). That’s when it finally hit home that this was Darth Fucking Vader and not Anakin Skywalker. And I’m pretty sure what was left of Obi-Wan’s heart just shattered.
I never understood why we don’t meet any friends of Anakin. Sure, they don’t have time for stuff like that in the movies but surely somebody had to have befriended him. It feels like he’s caught between generations in TCW. He’s either too young (i.e. Obi-Wan’s generation and older) or too old (Ahsoka and the padawans/younglings). Were there no padawans his age as he was growing up at the temple? What kind of weird, disfunctional monastic cult were they running?

No, Ezra. That is the wrong light. Surely Kanan and Ahsoka have gone over this with you. Red=BAD and EVERY OTHER COLOR IN EXISTENCE=GOOD. I know you’re kind of hamstrung because, you know, you’re trying to learn the ways of the Force in a time without the Jedi Temple, but from what I’ve seen from The-Disaster-That-Walks-The-Sky-And-Murders-Things and his Ambiguously-Sassy-Shade-Throwing-Heterosexual-Life-Partner, that might actually be a good thing.
