They meet again at a funeral.

Hermione is running from Old Sluggy - and he really is getting old now - Harry is, shockingly, trying to find him.

It’s as though someone has pulled these two seconds that their heels skid and their breaths falter, pulled these two infinitesimal seconds and stretched it out into an eternity that he’ll spend thinking about later.

The sun shines, the chatter carries in the wind.

It doesn’t feel right, he thinks, to feel this perverse elation on the day Professor Dumbledore is to be buried, but as the old man liked to say, Fihi ma fihi.

She looks back, and then at him, says, “Hello, Professor Potter,” and the wind carries the occasion back to him.

“I like summer light on you,” he blurts as he hastily puts out his cheroot.

Well.

At a funeral, no less.

Her blush is followed by a scowl of disapproval.

He should feel terrible about it, and he does. Mostly. But hasn’t felt wicked in such a long time - since before the prophecy, since before the war, - since he was a child - that for a moment, he feels oddly free.

I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.

(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)

The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively “popular” by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because it’s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.

So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.

I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And y’all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.

First, if you go to Webnovel’s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?

And that’s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Which… okay BUT! The authors don’t get paid! Look at that comment again. They’re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. It’s basically, “post your stuff here so we can get paid and you can get… nice vibes?” I mean look at this Orwellian writing:

Using the phrase “pay-to-read model” in the same sentence as “qualitative changes in lifestyles for authors” deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But that’s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.

Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that I’m a lawyer in the US.

I don’t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!

Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authors’ writing without paying them anything.

Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).

Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that that’s ALL on the writer.

So that’s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character you’re writing about and that they share your interests.

They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.

I see posts on here regularly from people who don’t understand how this stuff works, don’t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.

Don’t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.

(For those who're wondering: Harry changed the subject so that Hermione wouldn't dwell on the Easter egg).

Neville groped for Hermione's wrist.

'Dat's a pulse, Harry, I'b sure id is.'

Such a powerful wave of relief swept through Harry that for a moment he felt light-headed.

Half-blood Prince:

She raced out of the classroom on the bell, leaving half her things behind; Harry, deciding that her need was greater than Ron's just now, scooped up her remaining possessions and followed her.

Deathly Hallows:

“Yeah,” said Harry. “Like Barty Crouch, turned into a bone and buried in Hagrid’s front garden. They probably transfigured Moody and stuffed him —” “Don’t!” squealed Hermione. Startled, Harry looked over just in time to see her burst into tears over her copy of Spellman’s Syllabary. “Oh no,” said Harry, struggling to get up from the old camp bed. “Hermione, I wasn’t trying to upset —”

Harry really does care about her, doesn't he?

Writing Prompt/Challenge

Going to cross post this a couple places. Writing Prompt/Challenge: No Voldemort/Post-Voldemort AU where the Potters survived that night in Godric’s Hollow. Hermione Granger had the choice between schooling at Hogwarts or at Beauxbatons, and chose the latter after learning that the British Wizarding World was still recovering from the effects of a massive civil war (or alternatively an economic recession which has effected the school). She goes through her years of schooling at Beauxbatons and smashes numerous previous records. Earning plenty of scholarship opportunities. The question then becomes, what’s next for the bright young mundane born witch? There were a number of specialist mastery colleges, which she had considered, then discarded. Finally she decides to apply for schooling at the Magical World’s premier Mastery Level education institution. The International University of the Arcane on the Atlantean Isles. She’s accepted happily, with her wonderful marks and letters of recommendation from her previous Professors. Now all she needs in some housing. Most student get housing on Campus. However it is a little pricey and she’d really like to see more of the Isle during her time there. Which leaves a couple options. First) She could rent/share a house with a fellow student her age OR Second) she could apply to the scholarship foster program that has families of the Isles housing and aiding/educating the students under their care. She’s thrilled to discover that Lily Marie Potter nee Evans, a fellow English Ex-pat, World Renowned Charms, Runes and Rituals Mistress has an opening for a promising student who meets her exacting criteria. She meets the woman, who she’s surprised to learn is married to a senior member of ICW Law Enforcement and manages to impress. Earning a place in the student suite on the grounds of the Potter Manse. She’s pleasantly surprised to meet a fellow student her first day there. Mistress Potter’s son, rising ICW Hit Wizard Harry James Potter, who happens to be taking mastery level courses in Law, Defense and ‘something else, which he isn’t authorized to discuss’. The friendly and surprisingly humble green-eyed wizard invites her to a night on the town and sparks soon fly between them. TLDR: Hermione ends up effectively rooming with Harry at Magical University. Romance ensues. (I did not do any editing of this post. As such there may be minor errors.)
