Games beat all other apps to the Top 10 spots on iPhones
When SocialNuggets analyzed social and app store data, we found something surprising. The 10 most popular paid apps on iPhones are only Games. What this could mean is either iPhone users are more interested in games, or that games on iOS are more interesting than on other operating systems.
The most popular paid app on iOS is Angry Birds, and this is not surprising. Words with Friends, which is also a popular free iOS app, is #2 here.
The other games in the Top 10 list are Fruit Ninja, Plants vs Zombies, Doodle Jump, Cut the Rope, Traffic Rush, Tiny Wings, Pocket God and Infinity Blade.

Amazon Kindle Fire is most popular Tablet on social media, followed by rumored iPad3
Amazon Kindle Fire is the most popular tablet on social media in December. The conversations include tweets, discussions, blog posts and others. The second most popular tablet is the rumored iPad 3, which is becoming a popular topic for tweeting about. However, the rumors are not popular on blogs and other discussion forums as of now. According to social data, iPad 3 also seems to have a high intent to purchase even at this stage.
It’s not surprising that Apple's iPad 2 is most popular outside Twitter, given the number of enthusiasts and dedicated discussion forums. The other popular tablets in December 2011 are a mix of newly released and old tablets. Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Barnes & Nobles Nook, Sony Tablet S, Blackberry Playbook, Asus Transformer Prime, Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and Toshiba Thrive are the other popular tablets. Surprisingly, apart from Amazon Kindle Fire and the iPads, conversations around the other top tablets seem to be very less on both Twitter and other places.
Another surprise is that the newly released Asus Transformer Prime is discussed only on Twitter and not on other sites. This could be a carry-over effect of the contest for winning a Prime that was hot on Twitter in November. Social Nuggets analyzed social data on tablets between December 1 and 31 for their Share of Voice, for this infographic.
Kindle Fire vs iPad 2: Intent to Purchase settles down waiting for the next big thing
If we compare the Intent to Purchase data for iPad 2 and Kindle Fire, it is both interesting and controversial. Social Nuggets analyzed social media conversations that mention an intent to buy any tablet between September and November. This infographic shows what we found about Kindle Fire and iPad 2 from that data.
In September, Apple iPad 2 takes up almost 34% of the intent to purchase a tablet. Amazon announced Kindle Fire on September 28, and the intent to purchase Kindle Fire is 10%. This is a good percentage, considering when Kindle Fire was announced. The buzz around Kindle Fire was very high just after its announcement and people were actively discussing its features and price.
Kindle Fire seems to have taken the market by fire in October. About 66% people expressing intent to purchase a tablet in October said they wanted Kindle Fire, and only about 13% said they wanted iPad 2. What is very interesting is the effect this had on allother tablets in the market. Intent to purchase all other tablets in the market was only 21% in October.
Kindle Fire started shipping in November and there were a lot of reviews about the price, features, user experience and more. There were a lot of negative reviews about Kindle Fire, and these seem to have affected the intent to purchase this tablet. Interestingly, intent to purchase both iPad 2 and Kindle Fire together is only about 13% in November. When we checked what the other people intended to buy, we found a large number of people waiting to buy iPad 3. We don’t know how the interests of this set of people would swing. It would be interesting to see how iPad 3 changes the intent to purchase tablets, after its release.
Kindle Fire vs iPad 2: Returning, Rooting & User Experience issues plague Kindle Fire
Amazon Kindle Fire’s introduction has given rise to some new trends in the tablets market. Social Nuggets analyzed social data since the Kindle Fire release to see what new things we hear about, that we didn’t hear about other tablets.
Rooting is a term that keeps coming up on a regular basis in Kindle Fire conversations on social media. About 2% of all Kindle Fire conversations since its release are about rooting Android tablets. This is calculated taking into account only the explicit mentions of Rooting. There may also be other indirect conversations that we did not take into account. What these conversations around rooting could mean is that people miss the regular Android apps on their Amazon Kindle Fire. It would be interesting to know if this trend with Kindle Fire is on an increase in the future.
Another trend we see is that for a product which is very new, almost 2% of the entire conversations are about returning it. Kindle Fire set a lot of expectations among users and this trend does not look very positive for Amazon. Again, we had only taken into account the explicit conversations about returning the Kindle Fire tablets. There could also be other conversations that talk about returning in an indirect way.
User experience issues seem to be very popularly mentioned. People complaining about sluggish performance, volume controls, less storage space, screen sensitivity, privacy settings and the like, make up some 6% of the total Kindle Fire conversations since its release. It’s a pretty high number of explicit conversations for a new tablet. We have clubbed conversations around the reviews, features, price, intent to purchase and the like under ‘Others’ for our analysis.
Kindle Fire vs iPad 2 - Kindle Fire is most loved for its $199 Pricing
This infographic shows the Top features of Amazon Kindle Fire by SocialNuggets Index.
Kindle Fire is all about its pricing, like we would all expect. Most social media conversations on Amazon Kindle Fire pricing were positive, as the $199 pricing seems to be the reason for most people to buy this tablet.
Surprisingly, the #2 feature is Kindle Fire’s Display. Though there is some disappointment with the lack of e-ink technology, Kindle Fire display seems to be cheered overall. The body of this tablet, in terms of look and design, is the next top feature.
Accessories and Operating system of Kindle Fire are the next two cheered features. Kindle Fire runs on a customized version of Android, and people on social media are discussing problems using most Android apps on this tablet.
Kindle Fire has received criticism because its only connectivity option is Wi-fi and also its battery life is not all that good. We are not surprised that Connectivity and Battery have a least Social Nuggets Index on this list. The other top features of this tablet are applications, built-in apps and web browsing on the Silk browser.

Kindle Fire vs iPad 2: Do Amazon Kindle Fire users use their tablets differently than Apple iPad users?
If we look at how people say they use Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPads, we see some interesting differences. Here is Amazon Kindle Fire vs Apple iPad 2 in terms of activities:
Watching videos is the most popular activity on Kindle Fire, and it is also marginally more popular on Kindle Fire than iPads. Reading books and magazines is also more popular on Kindle Fire than the iPads. This could be because users of Amazon’s e-reader Kindle could have transferred over to using Kindle Fire.
On the other hand, Listening to music, Shopping, Social Networking and Gaming seem to be more popular on iPads than Kindle Fire. It is logical that iPads, with their own heritage of iTunes and iPods, are popular for listening to music. Though Amazon has been looking at Kindle Fire as a shopping device, it is interesting to see that Apple iPads are slightly more popular for shopping. This is based on the social media discussions around the shopping apps on Kindle Fire and iPads.
Amazon Kindle Fire lacks native apps for most popular social networking sites, while iPads have both native apps and lots of third party apps. Again, it is only logical that social networking is more popular on iPads than Amazon Kindle Fire.
Social Nuggets analyzed social data on Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPads between November 15 and Dec 2 for this infographic.
Will HTC continue to lead Samsung and Apple in holiday sales of smartphones?
In analyzing social media data for intent to purchase, we were surprised to notice that HTC still seem to lead intent to purchase followed by Samsung and Apple which is consistent with the market share data of Q3, 2011 released by Canalys. However, Samsung Galaxy SII seems to be handset with the highest intent to purchase followed by Apple iPhone 4S and HTC Sensation 4G.
Which smartphones are likely to be holiday favorites?
Our infographic shows the % intent to purchase for Top 10 smartphones. Besides Galaxy SII, Samsung also has Epic 4G Touch in that list. HTC is the only manufacturer with three smartphones in this list while Motorola has two and RIM has only one smartphone in this list. Apple has both iPhone 4S and its older iPhone 4 in the list though its older iPhone 3 doesn't appear in the list despite carriers giving it away for free. Also, since this data is collected from social media conversations, it's possible that people intending to buy iPhone 4S said iPhone 4. In that case, Apple iPhone 4S would lead this intent to purchase chart.
Which smartphone manufacturer has the highest intent to purchase?
HTC seems to have the highest intent to purchase in social media when we add intent for all of its smartphones. Samsung seems to be second most popular manufacturer while Apple is close third. RIM seem to be losing its grip as it is 5th manufacturer in this list behind Motorola who has certainly improved its position with various Droid phones including Razor.
Comparing smartphone vs tablet intent to buy
Looking at the social media data, there seems to be much higher intent to purchase tablets than smartphones this holiday season. Of the 400K conversations analyzed on smartphones we see about 0.5% intent to purchase conversations while on tablets we saw about 1% intent to purchase conversations among the 200K conversations analyzed.
Conclusion
Based on social media data, there seems to be higher intent to purchase tablets than smartphones this holiday season. Among the smartphones, Samsung Galaxy SII seem to be most desirable followed by Apple iPhone 4S though HTC leads as the overall favored manufacturer of smartphones this holiday season.

The Importance Of Distinguishing Features In Online Branding
While we were writing some blogs, we thought of adding thumbnails of various tablets. Then started our search on Google and Yahoo! for images of various tablets. What we found was an utter lack of branding in the tablet marketplace — except in the case of Apple.
Check out a chart we produced with thumbnails of various tablets. Can you really recognize any of the tablets? Well, I can only recognize Apple’s iPad and none else. When I asked people who own non-iPad tablets to tell me which thumbnails pointed to their Android based tablets, most of them failed in this exercise.
How About Smartphones?
Just having an Android label to kick start the market was a great idea and it worked for smartphones. However, if you ever see an HTC phone, it does have a clock image that can be differentiated even in the smallest of the thumbnails. BlackBerry has a very unique image that distinguishes it.Samsung doesn’t have a consistent image but with the launch of Galaxy II, it is getting better at it.
So What Happened to Tablets?
Needless to say Apple is the only manufacturer whose iPad tablets have a very differentiating look no matter which angle you look at. For some reason every other tablet (sorry HTC, clock is not enough to differentiate your tablet) manufacturer went with generic Android look except for some minor differences. Even RIM chose the generic look for its Playbook, leaving it no differentiation in appearance.
Oh yes, HP folks probably recognize their blue screen which became the blue screen of death for the device. It seems Amazon has learned that lesson already and has a distinguishing image for itself. This may not be sufficient but will contribute to its success.
Rethinking Product Looks in the Age of Internet
In the age of the Internet, products are typically evaluated online first. If your product doesn’t have a unique look, it will be lost in the crowd and all of your branding exercises will merely go to waste. So before you put out a product in the market, see what its thumbnail looks like on the web when your customers search for it.
