Funds go to your favorite nonprofit every time you buy something online... at no extra cost to you.
What?! Amazing.
Yep, it's SocialTransactions magic.
Who did you celebrate this Sunday?
Our parent company, Schaffer&Combs, is throwing a happy hour in honor of International Women's Day 2013! If you're in San Francisco, come join us - we'll be there celebrating our Women and Girl's Cause Fund.
Which methodology do you follow? We're on board with the new paradigm.
Three cheers for our partner Water For People who is listed in The Global Journal's top 20!
Spotlight On: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado
When it comes to fundraising, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado (BBBS SW CO) has embraced all that small town life has to offer. “All of our fundraising is done locally,” Allison Flores, Special Events and Marketing Manager for BBBS SW CO explained. “We have a lot of event type fundraising [pitch: their Annual Bowl for Kid’s Sake is coming up this March!] but we also take part in a lot of third party fundraising with local companies and artisans.” As has happened across the country, smartphones and seemingly universal wi-fi are now an element of life in Durango. BBBS has found that leveraging the internet and social media to publicize fundraising events has become the norm: “People seem to be online all day,” Flores said, so the organization is adapting. “It’s all about making supporting BBBS SW CO easy,” Flores continued. “There’s a big staff push to use our Facebook and Twitter pages more, and to publicize events online.” Considering all of the variables, it seems that Durango was almost perfectly set to have BBBS take advantage of SocialTransactions. “There’s not a lot of shopping in Durango,” Flores explained. “Everyone shops online a lot, so using STRX fits well with the local dynamic of our organization.” The initial reaction to BBBS SW CO using STRX has been positive. “I remember one lady telling me that she got excited when the yellow flower popped up in her browser,” Flores said. Believe it or not, Flores also received a positive reaction to using STRX at a local high school where BBBS was presenting - especially when she explained to the crowd of teenagers that it worked when you went shopping online. We love this early adoption story because it demonstrates a unique approach to STRX: BBBS SW CO incorporated the program into the way they already communicate and work in their community. They have presented STRX as another tool the town can use to support an organization they love by simply continuing their usual habits. With wdespread use of the STRX plug-in is looking promising, we foresee even more local dollars going to BBBS SW CO!

How did the idea of STRX come to you?
WT: the idea came from our founding team trying to figure out a way to innovate on the traditional affiliate marketing model, the network that helps stores pay commissions for referred sales. However, it wasn't easy! Initially our solution provided readers of blogs or news sites a way to easily review and purchase products through a linking tool that was non-invasive. In other words, one could learn more about a product without a lot of advertising being shoved your face! And then we stumbled upon the idea of doing something similar but for non-profits. And that's where the innovation came in to play... Instead of sending the purchase dollars to traditional media outlets we figured out how non-profits win in this space!
Why do you think it's an important fundraising tool for nonprofits? STRX allows non-profits a chance to innovate on fundraising. In addition, for the supporter, STRX opens up a form of social giving that provides the best of both time and money management. So for the non-profit it creates a new revenue source, without demanding much from the supporter - and the best part is that it is integrated into the daily life of the supporter.
How do you see STRX growing/changing over in the next 6 months? Great question! I see a lot of new non-profit partners, and new tools to drive more revenue. I see our Causes campaign really taking off in 2013! I see innovation on our technology, faster transactions and more supporter tools, like reports of how many dollars raised through their account. I see a lot of fun! I see happy Development Directors!

The Key To Success With STRX
Woody Allen said that “90 percent of life is just showing up." Be it true or not for your personal life, the quip is fitting in terms of success with SocialTransactions.
Yes, STRX is a free service, but if none of your supporters download the app before they shop online, we will not be able to collect any commissions for you. So in terms of STRX success, "showing up" means promoting your organization's STRX plug-in (example) until each and every one of your supporters has it installed.
Luckily, promoting STRX is easy and is a one-time ten-second process for your supporters. Here are some ideas we've come up with:
And an organization-specific example:
We want you to succeed, and we’re here to help you: if you post something on Facebook or Twitter, we’ll re-post it; if you have any questions, your account managers are just an email away, (or, email us at [email protected]).
Where does the money come from?
It's all about non-donation fundraising
If we had a nickel for every time someone told us that SocialTransactions sounded too good to be true, we could just cut you checks based off of that. (Just kidding.) The truth is that at first, we thought it was too good to be true as well. It’s not, but the process is so simple that it can be confusing. Let’s take a moment to break it all down. The pool of funds we’re collecting commissions from has been around since the early days of the internet - we’re just the first group clever enough to take advantage of this money for the benefit of you and your organizations. The whole process lives in the Online Affiliate Marketing world, where businesses send commissions to affiliates (advertisers, middlemen) for customers that make purchases on sites. These commissions are the funds that STRX collects from: when one of your supporters makes a purchase online, our web app collects a percentage of this commission to later be sent to your organization. As you already know, the STRX web app that makes this all happen is not only easy to install, safe, nearly invisible, but also accepted by more than 18,000 online merchants. There’s no need to check a list of merchants before your supporters buy something online either - our flower will appear in your browser when you’re purchasing something that will create a commission.
See, easy peasy.
