Earlier this month, I finally put the finishing touches on a giant beetle that I've been working on since last Fall. He's about a foot wide with a reinforced carapace and six long legs suitable for skittering around on, so this was a hand sewing project that was even longer-term than I originally anticipated. That said, I'm so delighted with the final result! I often start with a bunch of quick sketches and work out the final proportions during the patterning phase, and think this design translated well to 3D. The general concept was a beady-eyed beetle with enormous eye-spots for predator deterrence, but the funky T-shaped rostrum from the final sketch ended up being my favorite feature. I just adore beetles and am already planning another insect-themed project.
