olimar log collection post
following other day’s post i was driven to make an appreciation post for captain olimar’s character putting together a bunch of his journal entries and voyage logs that i thought were entertaining, interesting, or gripping… but i ended up with so many that i had to organize them by theme.
pikmin relationship
emotional life
taste
civilization-changing insight
hocotate freight (relation)ship
fuck my boss
fatherhood
philosophy
miscellaneous
i also added some commentary to a few with my own thoughts.
i left out many entries since i didn’t intend this to be a comprehensive collection of everything he’s ever said, so if there’s any ones that you personally like that i left out, feel free to add them.
|| pikmin relationship
“When I see the Pikmin engaged in fierce battle with the other creatures of this world, I often grow uneasy wondering why they never attack me... Could it be that they actually view me as a parental figure? A strange, disturbing thought...”
“Occasionally, when I look behind me, I make some very amusing discoveries. The Pikmin all seem to follow me in the same fashion, but there are always individual specimens that end up performing the wrong actions. I suppose if there are agile, capable Pikmin, there must also be clumsy, dim Pikmin as well. That is the natural way of things.”
“I wonder if these Pikmin were waiting for me to arrive. No... Not necessarily me, but an alien being like me who could fight alongside them. On this planet they are a weak species, but maybe they see that they can use the power of an alien brain to climb to the top of the natural order. Such ideas make me wonder if it isn't I who is being used by them...”
“At first glance, the Pikmin have such innocent faces, but this is misleading—they can actually be surprisingly whimsical. After leaving the group, they dig up plants on their own and frolic about, sometimes never returning to the Onion. When I find none following me, I begin to worry. I must pay careful mind to their movements.”
“The Pikmin have all perished because of my own carelessness. I am an utter disgrace as a leader... How can I continue to collect parts without them? Still the Onions join me in low orbit, as if this Pikmin extinction had never happened. I shan't sleep tonight.”
Courage Reactor — “We've recovered our first treasure! Amazingly, the Pikmin remembered how to salvage it. I can't understand their adorable language and I don't know what they're thinking, yet I'm so happy to see them. When I crashed on this planet, the Pikmin helped me locate my missing ship parts. In my darkest hour, the Pikmin were there for me. Now that I'm reunited with them, I know everything will be alright. It will... right?” / Sales pitch: “Physical energy is not the only kind! The energy dearest to us is that made by love and courage.”
Crystallized Telekinesis — “The Pikmin are always staring at me. It's nice to see that they look up to me, but it's becoming unnerving. Sometimes, I want to hide away in the ship just to escape their beady eyes.”
Hideous Victual — “I wonder if there's a way to use these creatures to aid my treasure-seeking mission... On second thought, that's a bad idea. Pikmin are the only creatures I can really rely on.”
Superstrong Stabilizer — “Several artifacts like this were sitting in the hole I explored today. The temperature inside the cave was perilously low, and the treasures were freezing to the touch. I felt sorry for the Pikmin that had to carry it... Afterwards, their little hands looked numb!”
Impediment Scourge — “Yellow Pikmin are infatuated with high places! They seem to love it when I toss them high in the air.”
Mirrored Stage — “Every day, it's nothing but work, work, work. Sometimes I need to just get it off my mind. So, I set this thing up as a stage and taught the Pikmin a song-and-dance routine. Red, purple, white, yellow, and blue Pikmin danced in perfect unison and sang their little hearts out. When I return home, I should take up a career as a dance instructor.”
P4 Voyage Log #11 Leadership Quality — “Whenever their underlings are in a bad spot, it's a leader's duty to remain calm, quickly assess the situation, and form a plan of action. For example, when the Pikmin are in trouble and start to panic, I calm them and reengage their focus using my whistle.”
P4 Voyage Log #14 Pikmin… All Lost — “I got careless...and all the Pikmin perished as a result. Horrified, I made my way back to the base, only to find that the Onion had released 1 Pikmin seed! This behavior likely developed to prevent extinction. I've sworn to take better care next time. Cross my heart.”
P4 Voyage Log #23 Pikmin Songs — “Sometimes, when they're in a pleasant mood, the Pikmin will start to sing a little tune. Feeling inspired, I tried to join in...until they went noticeably silent. I suppose my singing doesn't appeal to their musical tastes.”
P4 Voyage Log #63 Mistaken Sighting — “I was so hungry earlier that I mistook a Pikmin for a Pikpik Carrot and almost bit right into it! The Pikmin are friendly to me right now, but who knows how long our relationship will last? I quickly apologized to the terrified Pikmin and gave it a hug.”
P4 Voyage Log #70 Thank You, Pikmin — “It is very strange... The scenery of this planet, which I once found hostile, now sometimes strikes me as surprisingly serene. Perhaps I owe this feeling of peace to the Pikmin and our friendship.”
P1 Voyage Log Misc #10 — “My people were borne out of the sea of stars to come down to Hocotate, and when we complete our lives, we return to the great ocean of stars. But since these Pikmin come from the depths of the soil, surely to the soil they shall return. How very poetic—while it is all alien to me, the basic premise is universally beautiful.”
|| taste
Paradoxical Enigma — “I'm not just an intergalactic space captain... I'm also an artist. I see the inner beauty in everything. Some things other people call ugly and boring, I find intellectually stimulating and aesthetically pleasing. It's true... I'm sophisticated like that.”
Vorpal Platter — “This shiny disc sparkles beautifully, but its edge could effortlessly shear through the armor plating of a battlecruiser. Is it not true that all great art is "edgy" for its time?”
Harmonic Synthesizer — “My taste in music is highly refined. But my wife and kids have no taste at all! For example, when I ask my family if they want to go out for karaoke, they twist their faces and give me a nasty look! They don't know what they're missing...”
Disk of Amusing Wisdom — “I may not be the most graceful dancer, but who really cares? I like to let the music take over and allow my body to go with the flow. Sometimes my wife and I will be freestyling, and it looks like so much fun the kids forget to be embarrassed and can't help but join in!”
Dapper Rubber Cutie — “When I was a kid, I coveted a black leather jacket that hung in a shop window. It was so cool! I begged my parents to buy it for me, but they just scoffed in my face. So I saved up my pocket change for months and finally bought it myself! It turns out wearing a leather jacket during the peak of a Hocotate summer is a shortcut to getting a heat stroke. That was the last time I ever tried to be cool.”
Uniquely You Goo — “This is my favorite color. I love how it imbues passion and emotion into everything it touches. Come to think of it, the first Pikmin I encountered were red... Perhaps that's why I instinctively trusted them. Colors can influence behavior in all kinds of ways.”
Soul Reverberator — “I'm picky when it comes to music, but I'm fascinated by how a melody can perfectly capture a person's soul or even a specific feeling. I wonder what my song would be... I'd like to think it would sound bold and romantic and reflect my adventurous career... Maybe I should just write it myself!”
[Mail from Olimar’s wife] “Today, as I cleaned the bedroom, I found your secret cash stash. With thanks, I'll accept it gladly. (JP) I'll just pretend that I didn't see the matches from the shady cabaret club.”
|| emotional life
Pale Passion — “When I was just a young lad, I looked everywhere for love. I guess that's why I smile when I see young people laughing together.”
Frosty Bauble — “I get really scared when women get angry with me. Wives and daughters have sinister ways to get back at forgetful fathers... When my wife gets annoyed with me, I freeze on the spot. At least I can handle her telling me what I've done wrong. My daughter, however, will just stare at me. And that's much worse!”
Sphere of Heart — “I know it's impossible to read minds, but I am particularly clueless when it comes to relationships. When we first started dating, my wife was gracious enough to explain how she felt in great detail. I'm still awkward, but any social skills I do have are thanks to her.”
Sphere of Support — “I never considered myself to be someone with a lot of inner strength or fortitude, but my wife seems to disagree. I must be playing it way too cool when we're together...”
Sunseed Berry — “I found this fascinating fruit while out exploring today. The skies cleared up, and I felt peaceful watching the pink flower petals flutter in the wind. During this perilous expedition, it seems strange to have such softhearted, romantic thoughts. If I told my wife about this, I'm sure I'd get laughed at...again.”
Blonde Impostor — “My wife went through a phase where all she talked about was Piktamin and its nutritious value. She charted Piktamin U percentages, and then there was A and P... I never really understood what she was talking about, but she was so passionate about it I couldn't help but listen.”
Impenetrable Cookie — “As I grow older, I've observed that I am becoming crankier. Today, I flew off the handle over a trifling matter. I feel like such a fool... I must learn to control my cantankerous temper! I can't allow my bad attitude to erode teamwork on this vital mission.”
Love Sphere — “According to the ship's scanner, this inanimate object has the capacity to love. Unfortunately, my love is already spoken for. Although... (JP) No, I would also enjoy a temporary escape from reality... This fantasy is a secret from my wife.”
Worthless Statue — “At first, this object looked impressive, but closer inspection reveals it's just a cheap statue. In many ways, it reminds me of my father. Hmmm... I probably shouldn't tell him that.”
Good Old Memories — “The scent reminds me of something strangely nostalgic, like my memories of when I was still embraced by my mother, or the time when I was unreasonably spoiled. Those happy memories are the reason why I am here now. Speaking of which, I haven't returned home recently.”
Lost Gyro Block — “When I observe this object, I can't stop myself from tearing up. I wonder why... It's hard to say. But, it might be because some of these items remind me of the past.”
Time Marker — “Despite its solemn appearance, the sound emitted by this object is airy and bright. It reminds me of the innocence and wonder that lives in the heart of a young child. It's important never to lose that sense of childlike wonder... I know I haven't.”
Think-Tank Combobot — “I was in awe of modular robots when I was growing up. Their strength and abilities impressed me to my core! I doubt anyone's ever admired me in such a way, but maybe that's not so bad. I find great satisfaction in being respected as an equal.” ← i like this one because he doesn’t know how many people who’ve played pikmin admire him. he’d probably feel touched to find out. it’s also really relatable to me because i tend to think along the same lines.
|| civilization-changing insights
Disguised Delicacy — “The fruit on this planet is astonishingly large. If we could cultivate these ample fruits on Hocotate, nobody would ever go hungry again! Sadly, I don't know anything about agriculture. Maybe I should have listened to my wife when she told me to do yard work...”
Astringent Clump — “The night after I ate this fruit, I had a dream in which I saw lots of them growing, clustered together on a tree. If I were able to grow and harvest that many, we'd never run out of food. I suppose we won't know what's possible until I plant the first seed...”
Lustrous Element — “This rare, alien metal doesn't exist on Hocotate. When I gaze at it, I'm gripped with an overpowering sense of greed. On Hocotate, there is a valuable metal with a stunning sheen that has a similar effect. Perhaps this alluring metal is responsible for many of this planet's woes.”
Flame of Tomorrow — “From the beginning of time, my people have searched for a perfectly clean, endlessly renewable energy source. Unfortunately, we've never found anything close to it. Rubbing these two objects together seems to produce fire. Maybe this is the long-lost energy source we've always been searching for?” ← this one made me realize his planet wouldn’t have fire, at least not fire as we know it. hocotate presumably has very little atmospheric oxygen since it’s toxic to the lifeforms that inhabit it, so sadly i don’t think striking the match would work when he brings it back. i wonder what they breathe to sustain their cellular metabolism instead. fire needs fuel and an oxidizer such as oxygen to sustain itself. there are other oxidizing elements and molecules aside from oxygen but their burns are much less stable and more explosive and dangerous (at least under earth’s atmospheric concentrations). many of them are used by us as rocket propellants. one such explosive example is chlorine trifluoride, which i’ve read can set concrete and sand on fire. hocotations probably use other rocket propellant technology to get off planet and if companies are regularly transporting space cargo then they must have mastered some sort of propellant technology. this species has harnessed the properties of gluons which bind quarks together. i think they’ll be fine technologically. i think their planet’s problems are less in need of prometheus and more to do with dismantling their economic system and changing mindsets. …listen to me. going through these logs i’ve been realizing how similar i am to olimar in so many ways and maybe that’s why i like him so much. the familiarity in sharing a lot of the same brain.
|| hocotate freight (relation)ship
Emperor Whistle — “Sometimes it's difficult to tell if a treasure is natural or manufactured. The ship has concluded that this treasure is natural, but I'm not so sure. The ship sulks and gripes for days if I disagree with it, so I'll keep my opinion to myself.”
Decorative Goo — “With the assistance of the blue Pikmin, we found a canister of paint today. I used it to give the ship a fresh coat of paint! But did it thank me? Noooo. As a space pilot, I've always treated my ship like a trusted companion (even if it is a smart aleck). Yet, that snobbish ship has the gall to complain about the color! There's no pleasing it! Forget this...I'm going to bed.”
Gemstar Husband — “A captain views his ship as a brother and a partner, someone he can trust with his life. It's crucial for them to develop an unquestionable, unfaltering trust.”
Pink Menace — “I could never say this within earshot of the ship, but years of hard use have taken their toll. For one thing, the thermostat is broken. The temperature in the cockpit can fluctuate wildly between sweltering heat and frigid cold. The humid heat is awful, but the bone-chilling cold is even worse. Looking at this heart-warming gem gives me the strength to endure the elements.”
Strife Monolith — “Computers view the world in ones and zeros, but my people are different. Our world isn't simply black or white, right or wrong. Everybody is different. Maybe one day the ship will understand that. And maybe one day it won't give me sass when I ask it to collect a slimy specimen.”
|| fuck my boss
P1 Voyage Log Misc #23 — “I have been stranded on this planet for some time, and I have grown used to my life here. At times, I even find it quite bearable. I know that as soon as I return, I'll once again be subjected to daily ridicule by my despicable boss... If only I could be a Pikmin... NO!!! I must not think such thoughts! I have a family! I will not give up! Ever!”
Merciless Extractor — “When I look at the president, I can't see myself climbing the corporate ladder. To be a manager, you've got to be an inhuman, heartless villain. This trait allows them to flog their dedicated workers without mercy and still sleep at night. I feel that same merciless cruelty radiating from this metallic altar. I wonder if it was once used for dark, unspeakable ceremonies. Or perhaps it was once the desk of a corporate boss. We'll never know...”
Toxic Toadstool — “I'm glad that on this expedition, our ship's reactor can power our life-support systems indefinitely. This will give us all the time we need to thoroughly examine all of the treasure we recover. I don't care if the president wants us to hurry. I've had enough of his hassling! I think I'll move more slowly just to cause him indigestion.”
Mirrored Element — “Talking to the boss makes me crave the power to order people around. He just sits on his haunch all day, barking out wildly irrational requests. Arrgg... When will it be my turn to be the boss?”
Survival Ointment — “In a survival situation, the most important things are water, courage, and a first-aid kit. I've got water and an endless supply of courage, but I don't have a first-aid kit. Sometimes I don't have a whole lot of motivation, either. I may be a daring explorer, but sometimes I just want to loaf around all day and sleep. Wait... What if the president reads this journal? Uh... Ahem... I'd never dream of slacking on the job! Yeah...”
Happiness Emblem — “When you grow up and get a job, your time doesn't belong to you anymore. To make up for that, you have to learn to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. Looking at this pattern we found today makes me feel a little less miserable. This is today's simple pleasure.”
Mirth Sphere — “My investigation has concluded that this object embodies the spirit of comedy. But when it comes to humor, not even this item can stand up to my unrivaled powers of hilarity. Too bad the president doesn't appreciate my comedic genius...”
Power Emblem — “There's physical power, and then there's mental power. Anyone who's witnessed an argument between me and my wife could clearly see who's quicker on their feet in the heat of the moment... That doesn't bother me so much. I just wish I had the same fortitude and wit to stand up to the president.”
Talisman of Life (Phoenix) — “Maybe this object would help increase productivity at Hocotate Freight. So would a better spaceship. Hmm... Maybe it's my fault. If I stopped miraculously surviving such dangerous situations, the president might realize we need to upgrade our equipment.”
Priceless Bird — “To have a charm that's solely devoted to financial luck comes off as vulgar and gives me an icky feeling. On the other hand, money is a necessity, and that's an inescapable fact. Well, there is one escape. More money. Wouldn't that be nice...to have a bit more...”
Lip Service — “I've never had much desire to climb the corporate ladder, but I'm beginning to think I should. Every year that my kids grow older, they get more expensive. Taking care of them is my most important duty. I should take lessons from the ship on how to be a high-pressure salesman. Then I'd rake in the cash!” ← poor guy is conflicted about it. olimar doesn’t see any value in money for its own sake besides it being the necessary means to provide for his loved ones who are, frankly speaking, exorbitant. olimar is a sweet guy but i think he needs to put his foot down more, starting with his family. his wife is shown in the mail letters to be a short-sighted spender and and puts pressure on her children to work hard in cram school until they need to live simple again. my headcanon is olimar balances her out with a more reasonable position towards how the family spends their time and money that doesn’t need to involve large sums of cash all the time. judging by his logs and entries, olimar is clearly good at perceiving the potential of items and repurposing them in creative and imaginative ways. without his influence she’s clearly going off the rails, even his kids are mailing him to come back not just because they miss him but their mom has gone off the deep end. from the little we see of her character, she seems like a bit of a gold digger… “you made us so much money, i feel our love renewed honey”. to be honest i’m not sure what he sees in her. maybe i’m more sensitive to that kind of stuff. there must be more to her.
i noticed that olimar’s work-life situation has a distinctly traditional japanese flavor of cultural pressure expectation kind of thing going on. in japan people are expected to remain loyal to a company for life where work becomes its own sort of “family”. though in recent decades japan has been shifting away from this model, but notes of it still linger which i’m assuming is mainly among the older generations. i think the pikmin series serves as a sort of commentary on this on part of the japanese creators.
olimar is clearly a victim of the salaryman culture, where the male of the family is expected to be the breadwinner and works grueling hours for a company he’s loyal to. but that isn’t where olimar’s true desires are. he has an independent and curious spirit. his true passion is in the mysteries of life itself and the things he loves, including his family. he can’t help but look to something more meaningful. not his cargo transportation work. not his boss that he hates but is socially expected to grovel and be polite to because of him being arbitrarily higher up in the hierarchy. i am positive there is a significant amount of japanese salarymen that feel just like olimar does but need to maintain face to avoid being stigmatized.
i’m not sure how much that translated from a japanese game to a western audience, but i don’t think it’s an inherent personal flaw inherent to olimar so much as it is the collision of his own personality with the culture around him. olimar is a character that wants to maintain even relations with everyone, to be a decent respectable figure to the people around him. to come off that way to others, he must meet them where they are, which means adapting to the cultural expectations he lives in, even though we can tell he truthfully finds the one he lives under a bit unreasonable and stifling. he said it himself that prefers horizontal relations with others over hierarchical ones (“i find great satisfaction in being respected as an equal”). i think olimar is so valid to be angry that he isn’t in charge of work decisions because he is objectively more competent and farsighted than the president. that must stress him out a lot not to be able to tell him off as an equal because he knows he’ll be getting a response that comes down to “you’re in no position to tell me how to do my job”.
|| fatherhood
“I wonder if I shall ever be able to escape from this world. How much suffering must I endure before I can finally see my family back home again? Still... When my heart grows too heavy, I take comfort in my efforts. I will get home...or I will expire trying.”
Memorial Shell — “I've observed several species of shell-dwelling creatures inhabiting the Perplexing Pool. One of these feisty beasts forms a spherical gem within the meaty depths of its shell. In a way, this gem could be considered this creature's lifework. I consider my children my life's work.”
Disk of Joyous Wisdom — “Whenever I hear a joyful song, I'm transported back to family celebrations with live music and dancing. I see my family, all dressed to the nines, looking at me with silly expressions on their faces... I hope to witness that again one day soon.”
Memory Fragment (Top Right) — “I understand the instinct to hide something precious to you, though the word "protect" is probably more apt. I feel similarly about my family. I'd do everything in my power to give them a safe, happy life. It's a simple desire, but it motivates me to carry on.”
Memory Fragment (Left Edge) — “This looks just like the kind of pictures you get when you let a kid play with a camera. Blurry and too close-up to see anything. I deleted all those pictures my kids took to free up memory space, but now I wish I hadn't. Imperfect memories can be the most precious...” <- hmm you know this reminds me of something…
(i’ve been reading brian eno’s diary recently where this quote was published. he talks a lot about the value of imperfection and noise)
Velvety Dreamdrop — “When my first child was born, my wife and I would sit outside in the warm spring weather and take turns rocking him in our arms. Those days were filled with endless joy. The sunlight bouncing off his downy hair looked just like this.”
Daughter Doll Head — “Children often exhibit both the positive and negative qualities of their parents. I think that's why we feel for them so much. What's more, we want them to keep improving and even exceed the expectations we set for ourselves. It's hard work being a kid.”
Sphere of Vitality — “It's become painfully obvious to me that the mind and body are closely linked. Spending so much time away from my family is hard on my mental health, and it visibly takes a toll on my body. Even when I eat healthy and exercise! I really miss them...”
Mama Doll Head — “As a parent, you need to be able to hide some emotions from your children. It's harder than you think... I remember telling my parents about my career goals and seeing the disappointment in their eyes. It hurt, but I'm glad it didn't pull me off my path.”
Mooching Vase — “I've worked hard so I wouldn't be a financial burden on my parents, and I don't want my kids to be dependent on me when they grow up. A parent's job is to raise independent children... but not too independent. You still want them to come home for the holidays.”
Princess Pearl — “My daughter's loved shiny jewels and trinkets for as long as I can remember. She used to be happy enough with pretty stones and pieces of sea glass, but now all she wants are the more illustrious items like this. That doesn't bode well for my wallet's future...”
Unbreakable Promise — “It's a common practice to present an expensive gift to your intended when you propose. I didn't have the means to do so when my wife and I became engaged, and I've always regretted that fact. But at least I still love her as much as I did then...”
Condensed Sunshine — “This scent is dangerously sweet and brings to mind concentrated memories of my wife's adorable smile... But one can't subsist on sweetness alone. You also need solid qualities like trust and patience. Having those is like a big, hearty breakfast for the soul!”
Back-at-the-Beginning Track — “I took my son to the zoo a few years ago, and he suddenly started crying. To calm him, I walked him back and forth on a path with no exhibits. We didn't see any animals that day, but I learned that sometimes the best solution is as simple as a change in direction.”
P4 Voyage Log #68 She's Growing Up — “Though I find myself stranded here, I know my daughter must be getting lovelier by the day. It's a terrible shame that I can't be there to see her grow up... Of course, if I was there now, I'm sure she'd just brush me off and yell, "Go away, Dad!"”
P4 Voyage Log #69 For My Son Someday — “My son constantly picks up bugs and animals, and my wife always scolds him for it. But I'd like him to pursue his interests and treasure his curiosity for living things. If I showed him the notes I've made about the creatures here, I'm sure his eyes would light up!”
|| philosophy
Patience Tester — “In man's heart, good and bad coexist. This conflict has made the mind of mankind into a complicated thing. It brought us war, but also culture and civilization. And here I stand worrying. Should I open the containers in front of me and try eating the contents, or should I stand firm?”
Hoop of Fortune — “People tend to gather with those who are like-minded, and eventually they become friends and partners. If you want to build a circle of good friends, you must be the kind of person whose company you enjoy. Then you find companionship with yourself as well.”
Disk of Sorrowful Wisdom — “What is the purpose of emotions? They give our lives meaning and balance. One could not survive a life of pure sorrow, so we must find delight in things. A life of pleasure would become monotonous, so we should appreciate the bad as much as the good!”
Sphere of Desire — “There's nothing in the universe more interesting than the universe itself. A curious and inquisitive mind will never be satisfied, no matter how much you explore. I hope I feel this way as long as I can. It's important to stay interested in your work.”
Sphere of Truth — “This ball is meant to represent truth, but the truth is never truly black or white. It's both subjective and objective, and extremely tricky. I think the color grey would make more sense for this object, or maybe that hideous brown you get when you mix all the paint colors together.”
Talisman of Life — “Explorers strive, but fate decides. You can prepare and practice for an expedition, but there's only so much a person can do... Sometimes you have to put your life in fate's hands. I've come to understand this intergalactic truth while I've traveled to the fartheset reaches of the universe. Fate and I are pretty close.”
Zest Bomb — “Seems to be a Citrus Lump but younger and very green. Inexperience is usually perceived as a weakness, but its power should not be underestimated. Many an organization has been improved by a newcomer's creative and untamed energy.”
False Lollipop — “I look at this and am instantly overcome by thoughts of my mother and all the mothers out there. They represent the power of nature itself, cocooning the universe in love and fortifying it with their strength since the dawn of time.”
Fire-Breathing Feast — “Throughout my life, I've met people who seemed flashy or fancy but were actually quite down-to-earth. I've also met people who were as arrogant as they looked. The same lesson should be applied to this fruit. It looks pretty intimidating, but what's on the inside?”
|| miscellaneous
Air Brake — “The weather was beautiful today. In this region, the weather is always good. The plants and animals thrive on all that sunlight. I want to hurry up and finish cataloguing all of these treasures so I can get back to the sunshine.”
Meat of Champions — “I never expected to find such a delectable cut of meat deep in this dark and slimy cavern. What kind of a cavern is stocked with savory deli meat? This riddle perplexes me, but I'm sure my unrivaled powers of investigation will prevail. I've made it my personal quest to solve all of the universe's ancient mysteries.”
Delectable Bouquet — “While observing the plant bear fruit, I was unable to work out where and when the flowers bloomed. I was so frustrated that I couldn't figure out basic botany... But all those annoying feelings faded away as soon as I bit into the fruit's sweet flesh.”
Wiggle Noggin — “I have a confession to make. I've become enamored with this object! I know I shouldn't fall for company property, but I can't suppress these feelings forever!”
Arboreal Frippery — (JP) “I haven't slept at all last night... I already missed sleeping on my hard bed at home. Come to think of it, this plant is supposed to have a strong sleep inducing effect. But I also heard that if you use it in the wrong dosage, you might fall into eternal slumber... I might give this a try.”
Dream Architect — “At night, I have nothing to do to keep me occupied. I've been searching for something to dull the boredom, but every time I find something I want to play with, it's broken. This object is a great example. It looks fascinating, but I can't get it to function. I guess all I have to do is write in this journal.”
Fastening Item — “This one time, when I was a kid, my parents had a big fight and refused to speak to each other. I went back and forth, mediating until the argument was resolved. I'd like to say it was for the sake of their love, but I was just tired of waiting for dinner.”
Perforated Raft — “I'd equip the underside of this raft with floats so that it hovers above the water's surface, making it possible to sail it without sinking. Then I'd plug the holes with magnifying lenses so I could peer underwater safely.” ← great example of what i talked about earlier regarding olimar’s ability to creatively repurpose an object
Sphere of Beginnings — “I've never minded having to start over or pick up my life at the flip of a switch. My environment and those in my social circle might change, but as long as I have my family with me, I'll still be me. They always call me out when I'm "acting totally weird."”
Sphere of Fuzzy Feelings — “Growing up, I wasn't one for chasing balls or shedding tears over a win or a loss, but my passions were equally absorbing... I wonder why this giant fuzzy sphere has me thinking of more youthful days and what they were like for the inhabitants of this planet.”
Boss Stone — “My long journey has led me to this compelling stone. During my quest, I've narrowly escaped being crushed, chewed, ingested, and scorched countless times. But somehow I persevered, and this stone reminds me of that. It's like it has a personality of its own. I'd like to take it back with me and place it in my garden to commemorate this expedition.”
overall he fits this pattern. maybe this explains why he and dale cooper (who i compared him to in my previous post, shares olimar’s type) who i noted similar in some personal quirks and basically universally beloved audience reception. and also explains why i feel like my soul resonates with both of them so much. people rarely spontaneously tell me what they think about me to my face, but to me it’s like feedback. those high opinions i’ve read of these characters give me this indirect validation towards the traits i have that people love those characters for. olimar was so real for this “When we first started dating, my wife was gracious enough to explain how she felt in great detail. I'm still awkward, but any social skills I do have are thanks to her.”
