WHAM!
I acquired this cassette from the venerable Chris Grier. A memorial service in his honor brought affirmation of a universal wit, humor, and singular approach to experiencing life. On a bench toward the back of the service was a collection of stuff he left behind. There were limited-press 7" records, art books, CDs, and paintings - all of it symbolic of his amazing taste. People were encouraged to take what they wanted. I immediately saw this WHAM! tape. It was the only thing I felt compelled to pick up. To me it was sort of emblematic of our friendship. I remember finding a kindred spirit when I realized Chris could love the most chaotic noise and then also be down with impeccably written pop songs. Our conversations would cover a lot of ground - from Wolf Eyes to Tina Turner to Derek Bailey. I guess a lot of people are like that. But then no one was like Chris. I'll miss him and, you know, WHAM!
