When my dad was a teenager, he accidentally started working for a restaurant that was a front for the local mafia. He flipped burgers for a semester and then, when he wanted to leave, one of the members pulled a gun on him and said he couldn’t. “Oh, fuck off,” said the guy’s superior. “Really, man? He just flips burgers, and he’s not even good at it. Let him go, dumbass.”

hey, shoutout to the autistic kids who were constantly told that their stimming was annoying/distracting, their lack of eye contact was rude, and their meltdowns were “making a scene”

like, i feel you, it’s hard enough dealing with a society stacked against you without having your coping methods taken away

and if you’re one of those people like me who overcompensated, became hyper aware of how they were coming across and now have difficulty being yourself around anyone, that’s not your fault, it just shows how strong you are and how quickly you adapt, you’ll get there

if you’re one of the people who still have trouble with how they’re percieved, if you’re treated unfairly by everyone for being who you are, that’s a failing on their part, not yours. being yourself takes strength, even if it feels like a weakness. things will get easier.

sometimes i’m like “why am i still here” but then i realize that i’m often the only person who is around to take bad-to-eat stuff out of my dog’s mouth and i think there’s this sort of western idea of “if youre not CEO youre nothing special” but my dog is still alive bc of me and i’m still alive bc of other people so maybe i’m just here to pet cats and wear sweaters and help people take the glass out of their mouth. you know? maybe i won’t be CEO but maybe i’ll be able to help somebody afford their trip home. and i think that’s pretty okay, you know?
