Semi-Important Notes:

I'm a plural (OSDDID) system. I'll post about plurality every so often but I'm not super open about it and I don't interact with the plural community on here much for personal reasons. I just wanted to clear this up so people aren't confused when I suddenly refer to myself differently. This blog doesn't "belong" to any of us in particular-- we all use it :)

I consider myself alterhuman-- I'm alienkin-- and very much do interact with that part of the internet here. Feel free to ask me about this! I love to talk about it <3

I am on my paws and knees begging folks to realize they don't have to be the world's most amazing writer ever to write! The alterhuman tags have been feeling really devoid and empty of a lot of the usual interesting essays lately and that makes me really sad! I love it when you all write! I love reading about the experiences of people! You also don't have to be interesting to write about yourself. Most people, I find, view themselves to be quite boring and are more fascinated with the lives of others. The reality of this is that you think you're boring because you've lived with yourself/selves your entire life! Of course you're going to seem mundane to yourself. But the secret is, nobody else is you. And no matter how utterly boring you find yourself or your thoughts or your particular relation to the alterhuman community I can assure you, you are interesting to others out there. Your voice DOES matter. Your thoughts and experiences DO have value. You ARE valuable. So please, please write. Please draw. Please share your experiences through literally whatever form you possibly can! I LOVE to read about everyone's unique experiences. Some of my favourite essays and writings out there have been from people who are so entirely and vastly different from myself that I could never have even conceived of the way they viewed things and how they experienced the world around them until I read about their experiences. Some of my favourite artworks are from people who's styles and preferences are wholly different from my own. I promise you, you do not have to be talented or skilled or amazing or perfect to create something of meaning and worth that revolves around your experience. Whether that be a handful of sentences attempting to verbalize a way you felt during a shift, or a several thousand word essay on your particular experience as a spiritual therian. Whether that be a simple pen scribble or a 16+ hour finished piece of work. Whatever it may be. It has meaning because you made it with your own digits with your own hands with your own claws and its yours. Please write.

Thinking about the angst of Mickey living under Disney's thumb again everyone strap in for my bullshit

Disney as a company is extremely protective of their brand and their image, and as the mascot, that means Mickey similarly needs to be carefully controlled. Which means he doesn't really get to have that much of a personal life

Disney controls his friends. Disney controls his enemies. Disney controls his relationship status. If Disney want to erase one of his friends from his life they can, if they want to shove a new friend at him and tell him this stranger is now going to be the most important person in his life they can. They can make any particular toon a friend or an enemy at any given time, regardless of how he personally feels about said toon. At any moment they can turn around and tell Mickey he and Minnie need to be married and have kids, not just for a cartoon, but in his actual life, and they don't get a say in that. Mickey's life is not his own, because everything is in service of Disney as a company. It doesn't matter if he does or does not want to marry Minnie, because the decision isn't up to him. It's up to whoever is in charge. The higher ups at Disney will maintain an illusion that they care about him solely because he has seniority and he is Walt's living breathing legacy and that legacy is useful for the company's image, but ultimately he's just a tool to them. The mascot they need to make sure stays in line with their image, regardless of his own personal feelings

Like... how many rules and codes of conduct does he have to live by? How many things is he simply not allowed to do, not even because it will make the company look bad, but because it doesn't portray the exact image they want at any given moment? Does their control extend right down to dictating what he is and is not allowed to desire, even once the cameras are off and he's in the privacy of his own home?

Does he ever allow himself to contemplate how little of his own life belongs to him?

and tonight im thinking about how mickey as a character is a living persona of the concept of imagination

Okay I still have a lot of thoughts on this clearly and I have to put them under the cut. To save us the pain of scrolling past fast as fuck.

While i dont necessarily like Walt Disney as a person, it's quite obvious that Mickey represents him, as well as all the bright idealized things Disney (allegedly) is all about. Magic, hopes, dreams.

Mickey is a dreamer.

Hell, he's even referred to as one in Disney's own stage shows. And they LOOOVE reminding us constantly in their stage shows, too. I have two hard hitting examples of this and after that I'm gonna be lowkey making shit up. But stay with me.

Let's take a look at Fantasmic, for example. First of all: beautiful show. I'd reccomend it as long as you aren't sensitive to bright flashing lights!! (it kinda hurts my head to watch 💔)

The entire premise hinges on Mickey's imagination, watching colors burst into the air, watching scenes from classic Disney appear in front of him from nothing (okay, they projected it onto water. But STILL).

Scenes morph into each other until it seems to get out of hand, leading to an encounter with several Disney villains who ... summon a dragon?? Who he subsequently defeats by doing almost nothing, stating, "this is MY dream!"

It is an absolutely wild ride.

The fun part about all of this though, is that Mickey is conducting all of this the entire time, Fantasia style. The whole show is, more or less, us watching Mickey create a story around us for ~thirty ish minutes using his imagination. And also magic I guess but that's not the important part.

It's pure childlike play and creativity. He's taking us along with him while he basically plays pretend on stage.

AND, I'd also like to take a look at Dream Along with Mickey, also a very cool stage show-- we got to see the articulated talking mascot heads for the first time. Very cool!

This show honestly has a very similar premise when you break it down to its bare bones, just with less water projections-- I mean, um. Magic.

So Donald has unfortunately fallen under the belief that dreams don't come true. Naturally, the gang is set on convincing him he's wrong.

A lot of musical numbers happen to prove him wrong, after which Maleficent shows up, who they, of course, defeat through the power of believing in dreams. By which I mean they make everyone yell at her lol. And then she's like ouch that hurt, I'll be back. Honestly a kind of funny show now that I lay it out like this 😭

But the fact that this show is kinda goofy isn't my point, my point is: Mickey is still more or less in control of all of this. He can physically repel evil, mostly by willing it to happen. His belief in the power of dreams isn't just a cute narrative moral, it's a tool.

He isn't orchestrating the entire narrative like he is in Fantasmic, but he CAN make pyrotechnics go off with his mind-- he's so often shown to have a connection to magic that's interlaced with his own thoughts.

I know that canonically Mickey is an actor, and technically all of this can be explained away as just that-- acting, but have some whimsy for a second.

I don't think it's unintenional that he's often placed in fantastical, larger than life scenarios, or even fairytales.

The world of the imaginary bends to his will, because he IS imagination. He is dreams and fantasies and everything in between come to life.

I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.

Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.

Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"

I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.

I rediscovered this song from one of my middle school playlists a bit ago, and I wish I posted this a bit ago, cuz this song's birthday just passed us by... Oops 😭

The sound of this really reminds me of World Domination How-To (by Neru), which is also a favorite of mine I discovered in middle school. Something about it is so freeing, it just feels nice to listen to. It's not super slow or mellow or anything, but it's still a very comforting listen to me. Maybe it's the nostalgia lol.

I used to relate to this song so so hard, and it still really hits for me. Similar to Lost One's Weeping (a much more popular Neru song), it's a criticism of the school system, and how it can feel like it's forcing you to fit into an adult-like, socially acceptable mold. The speaker in this song in particular works hard to be the best student they can. However, they find that putting in such monumental effort for what feels like empty praise doesn't make them feel any sense of accomplishment. They're working for a reward that doesn't really actually reward them, leaving them feeling empty. After repeatedly asking why they were working so hard in the first place, the speaker in this song gives up on trying to be a perfect student. Instead, they begin to put their focus on what genuinely makes them happy. At the end of the MV, they cut their hair, symbolizing a new self they aim to embody.

I think that, while yes, this is clearly about the school system making someone feel that they've lost their personhood, and then rediscovering it, this absolutely applies to navigating a work/life balance as an adult as well. Because I am navigating that as an adult, and this song is still crazy relatable. And if i may stretch just an eensy bit, this song could totally be interpreted as the speaker having autism. Not understanding why they have to comply to arbitrary social rules, doing it anyway, and making themselves miserable for it. Maybe a stretch!! But i can see it.

I hope you guys like this song as much as I do!! It's a bit of an older one, so a lot of newer people to the fandom might not have ever heard of it.
