Just because the yellowjackets fandom is mostly filled with queer women, it doesn't mean that misogyny doesn't affect it!!

People would not hate Shauna Shipman in the same way if she was a man.

If Shauna Shipman was a man people would first praise her complexity, demand an Emmy for Sophie's acting and then the hate would be an afterthought.

And I don't want to hear people say that in season 3 she loses all of her complexity and turns into a cartoon villain because if you take a second to analyse the show you realise that that isn't even right.

I do agree that season 3 was incredibly flawed in it's writing but I believe that Shauna herself stayed relatively well written and that the main issue for her character was that the timeskip made the change in her character from season 2 to 3 very abrupt.

Nevertheless, I distress.

Saying that Shauna lost all of her complexity because she became a really bad person is really stupid to me because don't we have multiple TV shows about male leads becoming bad people or who are bad people and people praise them for their complexity (Breaking Bad) but as soon as women do it it's all like oooooh shessss evilllll I hateeeee herrrrrrr.

I'm not saying you can't hate morraly bankrupt women, I'm just saying that if she were a man people would be more understanding towards them and appreciate their writing more before hating them.

And I'm using Shauna Shipman as my main example because I'm obsessed with yellowjackets but this is not the only fandom to do this.

I'm actually thinking of writing a video essay comparing Shauna to both Walter and Skylar White and their receptions by the fandom.

Because you all want complex female characters but you can't even handle them.

Oh, and dude, the very specific parallels between how Santos and Ogilvie treat their fellow rookies. This episode draws comparisons between them, and the gunner attitude that got them where they are, but I don't see anyone talking about the specific symbolism of Santos' first one-on-one interaction with Whitaker and the glass-picking scene this episode.

Because, right...when Whitaker gets his fingernail smashed while moving a patient, Santos ribs him for it, but still takes care of him afterward despite having things she'd very much rather be doing. She's all into the procedures and showing off, but she still helps the little monk-ass farmboy when he hurts himself on the job.

And then there's Ogilvie, who sees Joy cut her finger in a very symbolically similar way...and smirks, presumably because he thinks it's satisfying recompense for her needling of him. Could not possibly give less of a shit. Enjoys it.

There's a different between being a jerk and being a shitty person, and boy does it show on comparison.

To me, people in the fandom treat Trinity Santos in a way equivalent to how they treat chihuahuas.

Chihuahuas are small dogs, but they themselves don’t really care about that. Their size gives them advantages frequently. They are great at alerting, wonderful vermin hunters, and loyal pets. They’re small and can fit into holes in the ground, and they’ve got sharp teeth that hurt if you let them gnaw on you for too long. Chihuahuas can be total love bugs that want to spend time with you (I should know, I have one. Her name is Juno and she’s my little street rat and I love her with my whole heart. She’s a chihuahua/terrier mix if anyone is wondering!).

However, people often mistreat them in ways they would never treat a big dog. They step on them, poke at them, terrorize them, pick them up with no regard for how they feel about it, etc.

It’s no wonder chihuahuas frequently snap at people. They’re tired of being harassed and hurt. So, they lash out before anybody can mess with them. For those little terrorized dogs, you have to build up their trust before they realize they are safe with you. They are incredibly strong willed and independent, and they are social little dogs. They are not toys to be paraded around and messed with.

Trinity Santos is the same way. She has been abused and handled by the people around her for her whole life. She very much wants to connect with the people around her (and she does end up doing it! Look at Dennis and Robby and Mel and Princess and Perlah!) but it’s scary for her. It takes time. She doesn’t want to live a life full of pain and terror, so she does what she knows works- sarcasm and dry humor and deflection and being a little bit mean. People back off, and she’s safe from the pain, but she is so lonely.

But lots of people don’t want to be kind to chihuahuas. They want the dogs to love on them instantly and be something they can tote around. When those babies defend themselves after a lifetime of mistreatment, people get huffy and would rather force it or terrorize the dogs more rather than be patient. It doesn’t help when everyone they see online also goes out of their way to harass chihuahuas.

Be kind to little dogs. That doesn’t always mean forcing interaction with them. Always keep the offer open, and let them come to you. Remember, the way you treat the things around you is a direct reflection of yourself, not the other person. I beg of people to try to come from a place of empathy.
