This is West Indian culture, celebrating our heritage and our country of origin.

A post has been circulating on tumblr accusing Nicki Minaj of appropriating (Plains) Native American and First Nations tradition by wearing a feather crown in her new tour promo. The OP has apologized but since some people won’t do their research or let this go I made this post.

This is a very small collection of a variety of feather headdresses that are worn during carnival season in Trinidad, Tobago, Jamaica, Haiti, Canada, and the US. The style of each carnival crown varies depending on the carnival season, the different themes for each island, the individual designer who creates the crown, and the colors representing the flag of each island. Nicki has done some racist and insensitive things in her career, but celebrating her culture is not appropriation, especially when this promo is put into the context that carnival is only a few months away in the Caribbean. Carnival crowns and headdresses look somewhat similar to war bonnets only because they are designed to celebrate the Native and African roots of West Indian nations. Carnival crowns =/= war bonnets, seriously people just do your research before you speak on things that you have no understanding of.

it’s been a super eventful year… some great things happened!!… the reaching the 3DS goal for the OMORI kickstarter and seeing my stuff being sold in san francisco and japan!! we had an insane convention season during the summer too and the PRETTY BOY anti-bullying campaign was an AMAZING success!! through your help, OMOCAT has grown from a little artist-owned online shop to a full-blown artist-owned company!! i’m incredibly grateful and could not thank you enough. (maybe i can with more giveaways…)

anyway, i hope to keep growing and being able to make things for as long as i can!! i got a lot of ideas coming so i’m not stopping any time soon… :^)

Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes

For 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It’s like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.

It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it’s designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they’re from, an equal start in life.

The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.

It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress.

With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby’s first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box’s four cardboard walls.

Mothers have a choice between taking the box, or a cash grant, currently set at 140 euros, but 95% opt for the box as it’s worth much more.

The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949.
