Denis’ ambiguous wording, the need for privacy by using an envelope, and the mischief written across Corbeau’s face in bold, red letters—everything clicked in place when Philippe pulled a mini-sized polaroid out of the envelope’s safety.

Its image was hysterically dwarfed as it sat on Philippe’s huge palm, but he would recognize the details they captured anywhere: plump lips dewy from a dash of sticky lipgloss, parted open in a wanton moan toward the camera’s lens, while the erotic hint of its wet tongue was almost obstructed by the saliva-coated fingers that the model hastily pulled out from that moist cavern. The photograph only depicted the lower half of this mysterious figure’s face, but Philippe could spot Corbeau’s angular jaw and his slim neck in a heartbeat.

All the blood in Philippe’s body rushed south when the polaroid’s purpose dawned on him.

Or: poor Philippe was subjected to several polaroid deliveries from Corbeau during their wedding reception.

He felt as unstoppable as the rapid, colorful fireworks that burst inside of him, for only a single interpretation in the entire world fit to solve this enigma: the two slits cut in the foamy cushion were carved for a pair of rings, and knowing that Philippe was incredibly attuned to his tastes…

They must be for engagement rings.

Correction: they must be for their engagement rings.

Or: when Corbeau accidentally discovered where Philippe stashed the engagement rings he had secretly bought for them, the Rust Syndicate boss never imagined that he would be thrown into an endless loop of heartbreak.
