Inside Hong Kong’s cage homes (VOX Borders)

Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.

Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.

I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.

The Hidden Homelessness Crisis In California (VICE News HBO)

There is a shortage of affordable housing in every state in the country, but it's especially bad in California — where there's only one affordable housing unit for every five extremely low income households.

The gap is not only pushing more and more people out onto the streets—it's also creating a new, fast-growing, and hidden class of homelessness: People who in the past would have been able to afford a room or apartment but now live in their cars by necessity.

Danielle Williams is one of them. She’s a single working mother who has been living in her van with her daughter for five years. At first, it meant sleeping in dark, scarcely populated areas, and being hassled by the police. But thanks to a program called Safe Parking — a network of parking lots equipped with porta-potties and lot monitors — she can now stay in her car overnight without worrying about her safety.

VICE News traveled to California to see how the new program is helping people like Danielle live a little more comfortably, and met with a government official who’s frustrated there aren’t longer term solutions to help the roughly 16,000 people in Los Angeles who now sleep in their cars.

Pennies Cost Too Much

Pennies cost more than they’re worth, and the tax payers are the ones shelling out for them. Canada and Australia have already discontinued the one-cent coin. In America, the annual losses after value are more than a hundred million. It is the easiest math in the nation. Discontinue them.

Dollar Coins

The switch from dollar bills to dollar coins would save approximately 4.4 billion over the next 30 years. This is because bills are so easily torn and otherwise destroyed and require so much upkeep from circulation.

Change the Font, Save Money

The government could save $136 million every year by simply changing their legal printed font from Times New Roman to Garamond. At merely 14 years of age, Suvir Mirchandani studied the differences between fonts and the costs in toner, submitting his findings that were later published in "Journal for Emerging Investigators" and then spread like wildfire in one article after another. The government has yet to implement the change.

Sanctions are an act of war

Consider the opposite: "Trade sanctions are NOT an act of war." I've heard and read those words too many times. You walk up to a restaurant and see a sign: "NO Blacks Allowed" Is that an aggression? It is, isn't it? Even more so if you are black. What if the sign was not on a restaurant, but on a grocery store? Yes, that's even worse. Trade sanctions are worse. There are 196 countries in the world, that makes this one hell of a small town.. and it comes with the same small town dramas and isms. Worse, only three people in this small town have a grocery store. If you were black and living in this town, and two of the three stores in this town suddenly decided to put up signs saying "NO Blacks Allowed", how would you feel? Would you consider it an act of war? PS: In other news, this is just me testing out posts from my iPod.

I laugh, even if my laughter has small traces of sadness. Most of those in my tribe are those who call themselves anarchists, rebels, and/or revolutionaries. Then, just weeks ago, many of these same “rebels” were saying, “Oh, no, the government is shutdown. We need to do something about it.” Those who normally call for the end of government are suddenly stressed when it is shut down? I’m amazed at how many live their lives immersed completely in their own hypocrisy… and I’ve been very busy in quite a few fights over this past week.

If I had to put a number to it, I’d say that at least 80% of Americans are invested in the government. That means they are in organizations, institutions, or companies that get funding or other support from the government — or, alternatively, they have at least one person (friend, family, or otherwise) who is significant in their lives, and that one person (or more) is supported by the government. And that investment has bought them out. These people are bought and paid for and, no, they very much do not want to stop the government.

It doesn’t matter how many bombs are dropped on innocent people, it doesn’t matter how massive and intrusive the spy campaigns are on any shore, it doesn’t matter how deeply the privacy of every human has been invaded, and it doesn’t matter how many innocent people are kidnapped and tortured and killed by the government. It doesn’t matter. People who are invested will find a “good reason” to excuse the government for the terrible atrocities it commits, because they have been bribed… and bribed well.

The only terrorists that ever existed are the ones who hold the thrones around the world, and those who stay in the shadows and whisper in the ears of the thrones.

So take your thirty silver.

But those coins are covered in blood, lovelies.

And you’ll never wash out the smell of blood.
