I went looking for gifs under “eating glitter” and came across this video and OMG I HAVE A NEW FAVORITE. The song - the facial expressions - that beat! Everything is hitting just right. And wearing a sequin dress alone in the backyard is such a quarantine vibe. I’m so glad to have stumbled across this!

Speaking of Adam Schlesinger, did you know that he wrote “That Thing You Do” and a bunch of songs from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” AND ALSO THIS GEM THAT TOTALLY 100% HOLDS UP???? He was truly prolific.

Adam Schlesinger passing away from COVID-19 has me listening to a lot of Fountains of Wayne. If all you’ve heard from them is “Stacy’s Mom”, then you’re missing out. This one cuts especially deep right now, because it always makes me think of my New England hometown and now thanks to the virus I don’t know when I’ll be able to go back and see my family again. :( It’s beautiful and I’m homesick and this whole thing is so damn sad.

Somehow I only recently discovered Beth Ditto and like, OMG. I had one really great day where I put her on a playlist and then got to drive around all afternoon in the rain listening to it and it was suuuper relaxing. Then the next day we went into lockdown. Oh well, at least I had that.

Speaking of nostalgia concerts, I’m really glad Motion City Soundtrack was my last live show before the shutdown.

As I’ve said elsewhere on this blog, Something Corporate was the first band I ever went to see without my parents; it was a special teen right of passage. And Jack’s Mannequin was basically the soundtrack to my college years. So it’s great to find that Andrew McMahon (lead singer of both those bands) is still out there making solid music. While ‘Fire Escape’ got a ton of play on KROQ, I didn’t cross paths with this song til I went to see him in concert last spring, and then it was stuck in my head on loop for weeks. He may have gone from pop punk to Coachella vibes, but I’m here for it.

Went to see Adam Melchor play the other night and he was opening for Dodie. I was only vaguely familiar with her via her song “Party” and we weren’t even sure if we’d stick around after Adam. But it was such a fun show that we ended up staying alllll the way to the very end, even though we didn’t know a single song she played. I remembered this one (I mean, it’s hard to forget the one that she opened by cheerfully going “This is about a threesome!”) and it’s been stuck in my head for days. I kinda wish the actor playing the singer in this official video seemed like less of a creeper so I could enjoy the whole package more...but still, it’s catchy as all heck and worth a listen.

My iTunes did a thing and now tons of my music is missing, including a lot of covers I’ve saved over the years. As much as I love the original of this song (that official VIDEO! I WOULD LIKE MORE GLOWING PUPPETS IN MUSIC VIDEOS, PLZKTHX <3) as well as its other great covers, this version has a special place in my heart too.

This song played over the end credits of the “You’re The Worst” series finale last night and I screamed in joy when I heard the opening chords. They couldn’t have picked a more perfect song to wrap things up with. Paul Baribeau’s raw emotion packs so much punch into a song that’s under 2 minutes long. 

Listen to it, take it to heart, and then...name ten things you wanna to do before you die, and then go do them. <3

There’s an official version of this song out that’s absolutely stunning - I’d have linked it, but the cover art has nudity and with new policies it seems best to err on the safe side. I highly recommend listening to full version on the best speakers you can though, it’s full of acoustic easter eggs.
