Garden Galaxy is SO cuteeee!

Okay so I found the demo for the adorable game a while back, and when it released in full I bought it on Steam. Now let me tell you, it's SO CUTE! It's like a digital zen garden where patience and customization are king, and new items surprise you around every corner.

This is currently my mess of a garden haha! The aim of the game is to put coins into the candle which spits out random items for you to decorate your garden with- from floors to plant pots. You can even customize the color of the background.

I totally recommend this for anybody who needs an ultra relaxing game to play, and the demo is free on steam :) check it out!

I present to thee: the (not so humble) glass block.

I LOVE GLASS BLOCKS! I myself recently bought my very first for about $20 from some vintage shop in my city center. Just like my grandmother collects fruit trees, and my mother collects second-hand porcelain, I collect the exquisite glass block. It is truly a work of art.

I love them so much because they remind me of everything I love. There was an abundance at my favorite public spa pool (before it got torn down), and I suspect there are many used in all sorts of places from libraries to restaurants. They can get you to appreciate the little things more closely, such as how warm library lighting bounces through them (I imagine it would look similar to the image above), lush green spaces (such as in the first image), or even raindrops.

In such a fast-paced world, full of greyscale drive-thrus and limitless grey concrete with not more than a sad street tree in sight, use of glass blocks in private OR (preferably) in public in an excellent way to reclaim everyday beauty and some goddamn peace and quiet.

The first glass block I bought for myself looks quite similar to the ones pictured below:

I find myself admiring it as it sits on my shelf, and it helps ground me after stress from studying or whatever else is bugging me.

Maybe 20 years from now I'll open a small restaurant in the center of my city and window the building with glass blocks like these, and hopefully inject some much needed character into my city streets :P

"Not the End of the World" - a short review

Not the End of the World, by data scientist Hannah Ritchie, is probably one of the most excellent books I've read this year.

It follows a very simple premise: the book explores key sustainability issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and air pollution. Using hard data and neat little graphs, we discover how far we've come in each key issue, common misconceptions about it, and realistic next steps to solving it.

The book is a breath of fresh air when it comes to fighting the doom spiral, and invoking calm, practical discussion around each -admittedly gloomy- topic.

For example, one of the most interesting things that caught me off guard was learning that deforestation in many wealthy countries is actually reversing, while in some countries that host vital rain forests deforestation is slowing down quickly (though perhaps not quickly enough just yet).

While of course a book by one author cannot give you the entire picture of something as utterly complex as environmental destruction, I found it extremely useful in getting a grounded, balanced look at the issue, as of course, if we doom spiral too hard we may rather give up and let things get worse, which I personally do not want to do.

I want climate action, and this book helped me become more effective in that as it gave me some hope that inspires me to continue to do better; such as using my voice in local politics to improve climate policies.

So I would honestly recommend this book to anybody! Check it out at your local library and perhaps you will gain as much from it as I have :)
