Critical Role Vox Machina Origins: II #01 (2019)
A quick reference post for people who want to watch Critical Role oneshots where someone other than Matt DM/GMs (links to all videos below):
To watch Liam as GM:
âLiamâs Quest Part 1âł: During a normal day of voice acting work, Laura, Travis, Sam, and Taliesin are suddenly caught up in a time-warping, Eldritch horror story
âLiamâs Quest Part 2âł: Now joined by Matt, Marisha, and Ashley, the meta versions of our players must find a way to stop the time-shifts that send them to horrific landscapes full of monsters.
âThe Screw Jobâ: An Exandria-set oneshot, in which a group of thieves try to rob a sorcerer in pre-Chroma Conclave Emon.
âThe Song of the Loreleiâ:Â An Exandria-set oneshot, in which a group of werewolf siblings in Wildemount investigate a tragic mystery in their home castle.
âThe Night Before Critmasâ:Â A group of elves from the north pole have to rush to save Christmas and Santa (perhaps familiar if youâve seen a certain movie).
To watch Marisha as GM:
âHoney Heistâ: Trinket runs into some interesting bears who have a plan to steal the best honey from a festival in Westruun. (Exandria-set, but debatably canon.)
âHoney Heist 2: Electric Beargalooâ: Trinket teams up with his old heist pals to go after a notorious criminal (also Exandria-set, but even more debatably canon than the last one)
âHoney Heist 3: Tovaâs Honeysâ: Tova the werebear assembles a team of crack bear investigators to uncover a sinister plot (also Exandria set, but pretty clearly not canon for a few obvious reasons)
To watch Taliesin as GM:
âThursday by Night Part 1âł: The CR gang wakes up in the Geek and Sundry studios to find theyâve been turned into vampires. Now if only they could figure out whatâs going on and how to get home.
âThursday by Night Part 2âł: Already down a few members, the remaining undead Critical Role players try to navigate the dark underworld of Los Angeles.
âCall of Cthulhu: Shadows of the Crystal Palaceâ: In the 1890s, a group of hired investigators infiltrate a museum exhibit at the Crystal Palace in search of an important ancient artifact.
To watch Travis as GM:
âGrogâs Oneshotâ: Grog introduces Vex, Vax, Percy, and Scanlan to a great new game - Bunions and Flagons!Â
To watch Laura as GM:
âCritical Role and the Club of Misfitsâ: A group of students get into trouble while serving detention at Smogwarts. Any similarity to existing IP whether beloved magic books or 80s movies is purely coincidental.Â
To watch Sam as GM:
âBar Room Blitzâ: An Exandria-set oneshot, in which a group of strangers discover something far more sinister at work after a bar fight breaks out in the Ass Sailor tavern.
âSamâs Romantic Cruiseâ: Fairy tale characters embark on a romantic cruise. Chaos ensuesÂ
âCrash Pandasâ: A group of raccoons try to win a street race. Chaos ensues.
We all eagerly await the foretold Ashley Johnson oneshot.
Universal d&d experience: when the dm starts dropping lore on you and everyone scrambles around frantically for something to take notes on
Universal GM experience: when you drop important lore on the players and they think itâs background fluff and donât take any notes
Ok mood
as a bisexual I'm forever grateful and in awe that mr. taliesin jaffe's dnd characters create the bi flag when you stack them on top of each other

I know this is a little late but this was the funniest fucking things in Critical Role a few weeks ago
Character vs Player. Married edition.
Fjord *feeling as usual responsible about keeping everyone safe*: Sorry, Jester
Jester *hellbent on protecting Fjord*: No, Iâm sorry that you werenât protected earlier.Â
Fjord: *is shooked*
Fjord: *heart eyes*
Travis: *realizes his wife is doing it again*
Travis: *stares into the camera like heâs in The Office*
Marion Lavorre: Jester, why are you naked?
Jester: I donât have anything to wear!
Marion Lavorre, looking through her wardrobe: of course you do! You have this lovely dress, this skirt I bought for you, hello Fjord, these blouses from Zadash, your nice shawl-
Jesterâs Wisdom: A Word Vomit
Once upon a time, I was like, what if I Researched this so I donât Repeat Other People? What if I tried to be Comprehensive? Or, heaven forbid, Concise?
Nope, nope, current energy says excessive word vomit is all thatâs going to happen
So a while ago someone brought up something interesting about Jester and Wisdom, how Caduceus is typically seen as the Epitome of Wisdom, and Jester isnât, even though, when it comes to stats, he and Jester are on the same level. (My addendum: even though when it comes to life experience he and Jester are pretty much on the same level). And I immediately had a huge train pileup of thoughts about Jester and covert wisdom, the different learned scripts she and Caduceus use to interact with the world, and the status of the Insight Check amongst the players. Overall thesis: Jester is very wise, but she doesnât play to her wisdom or even seem completely aware of it in the same way other characters are aware of their wisdomâshe simply has very different priorities and scripts when interacting with the world. Scripts that are just as useful to her as Caduceusâ are to him!
Hereâs a case study to illustrate this, chosen solely because I was watching a great animated bit for it recently. Episode 13, Claudia talking to Jester through her door, hurriedly packing to escape and trying to hide that sheâs doing it. Jester knows, instantly, that there is something wrong. Claudia wonât open the door because sheâs âbusy,â and the tone of her voice sounds ever so slightly strained. Jester does not attempt, and Laura does not ask for an insight check on this. Jester just knows that something is wrong, something outside of Jester being irritating or Claudia dealing with the ordinary stressful business of being a business owner. She knows, and she takes this knowledge for granted. And she responds to the problem in front of her, not by attempting to play to her wisdom, to deduce through context the nature of the problem, but by attempting to play to her charm. She wheedles and pressures and nags until in the game she is asked to make a persuasion check, at which point Claudia finally lets her inside the door and tells her what is wrong, as Jester has been insisting she do.Â
This is, quite simply, what Jester does. She understands people, even if sheâs perhaps not entirely aware of how well she does, but she problem-solves by leaning on her charm and her persuasion, not her natural insight. The issue for her isnât putting a personâs behavior under a microscope until she can suss out their motivations or offer adviceâitâs to convince them to like her enough that theyâll ally with her and tell her whatâs on their mind of their own volition. Itâs probably a script strategy she learned from Marion. But thatâs why with Jamedi she didnât keep an eagleâs eye on him or scrutinize his behavior like Caduceus and Calebâshe told him a funny ant story and tried to win his friendship, precisely because he was suspicious. When confronted with Lythir who Fjord had already scrutinized and pointed out as suspicious, she didnât attempt to do the same, she attempted to win him over with conversation and talk of pastries. It is a rare case indeed when Jester will actually attempt to use insight to understand a person or to give her a leg up in a social interaction.Â
Yet even so, her intuitions about people and their trustworthiness are usually right without her having to work at it. She simply knows to trust Twiggy, even as Caduceus stares her down and tries to divine something past the sugar high. And her strategy for making sure Twiggy is safe for the group, her strategy for obtaining more information by befriending her is actually the most useful strategy she could possibly use in the long term to get information. Itâs a solid theory, really: if someone is your friend, then youâll be close enough to them to learn more about them. If someone is your friend, theyâre less likely to turn on you no matter their past or motivations. If someone is your friend, theyâre more likely to tell you things instead of forcing you to guess. Thatâs not to say that Jesterâs friendliness and charm is cold or not genuine, but it is certainly a tool that the wields, and for strategic purpose.
Caduceus, however, is a very different kind of person. Alongside the Distrusting Duo of Fjord and Caleb, he is the most likely at any moment to squint at someone and look for tellsâare they lying to me? Hell, he insight checks Fjord while heâs telling him about his life in the orphanage! Caduceus does not trust people. And as polite and sweet as Caduceus is, heâs also far more invested in maintaining distance and hierarchy in his relationshipsâhe will always default to giving Sagely Advice, and charming a person into giving up their secrets with a close personal friendship is not something heâs likely to attempt as a problem-solving strategy. His scripts learned in the temple were most likely ones that leaned on insight and wisdom, not personal charmâhow to tell a person what they need to hear without inserting yourself too far into their lives, how to guide a person through grief without having them become dependent on you in their vulnerability. Considering this, itâs no wonder that Caduceus seems like The Wise One, even though he and Jester often demonstrate that they have roughly the same degree of understanding others. He just matches up with the stereotype more, leans on those particular skills of his more. It doesnât mean he is more wise, necessarily, at core.

Happy Valentineâs Day, you mushy goobers.
CONSIDER: laura running a de rolo kids one shot but taliesin is just percy trying to keep everyone alive until vex gets home
can i just say iâm really annoyed at the choice to retcon everything, have rey be a skywalker, and do NOTHING with the character development they did on ben solo? i really have no interest in watching now that this new movie is just fanservice everyoneone who bitched and whinedâŠ
I am 100% the Skywalker in the title is NOT Rey. JJ Abrams loved TLJ and I highly doubt heâd retcon Reyâs parentage. The Skywalker they are talking about in the title is Ben. Iâm sure of it. Solo may be his birth name, but he is still a Skywalker through his mother and it is because of his Skywalker blood that he is force sensitive. I donât see this as pandering those who fans who complained about TLJ, but rather a continuance of that what Rian Johnson did.
I would so much prefer this but considering they have an interview about retconning TLJ and now this I donât have much faith in them.
