A lot of people on twitter wanted me to explain how I draw expressions, so here you go

Unless you're drawing explicit realism, in my opinion, expressions should be exaggerated to some degree. If you aren't doing a 1:1 recreation, the point is to get the FEELING across. Try making the expression you want to draw and feeling how your face pinches and stretches.

Skin doesn't just "disappear" when your face moves it around --- that's where wrinkles come from! Pay attention to where your skin creases when you emote, and use it to your benefit. It's a fine line between overdoing it and underdoing it -- find your own balance.

Ultimately, every expression has a little bit of push and pull, unless your face is completely neutral (and even then, there are still some wrinkles...). Learning to think of expressions as actions and reactions is VERY helpful in learning to draw them without needing a reference, and in learning how to stylize and push expressions based on references as well!

I think a lot of people end up with stiff or unexpressive emotions in their art because they're just trying to recreate a picture instead of understanding WHY and HOW the face is moving --- and it's a tough thing that takes a while to really pick up and learn. Hopefully is helpful in showing a way of thinking about it that can influence your process and approach to emotions!!!

Also, bonus: even without the lines, the planes alone still show a LOT of emotion.

My thanks to folks who have been recommending The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik to me. I cannot find the post describing it as "if Harry Potter were better written," but that was the one that finally got me to read A Deadly Education. The book starts strong and keeps getting better.

I can see why people say it is hard to describe the books without describing everything. A pleasant aspect of the writing is how it builds on itself. Groundwork is laid in one chapter and explored later on; El is not quite an unreliable narrator, but she can relate facts while avoiding their significance or misinterpreting their motivations and emotional valence. For example, she says that her mother is a hippie crystal chick; we later learn that her mother is The Hippie Crystal Chick, actually world famous in her specialty, and El has been hiding that connection from both the narrative and her classmates for three years. I am waiting for all the groundwork on Patience and Fortitude to pay off in the next book or two.

Spinning Silver is probably a better book than A Deadly Education, but A Deadly Education is a faster and more compelling read. It is perhaps easier genre fiction, while Spinning Silver and Uprooted are full-on literature.

We have this idolized AND sanitized version of what happened then, and so we do not recognize it when it happens now.

As someone on the front lines of the court system, I’m confirming this. It’s easy to assume that people are being hyperbolic. They’re not. People in the courthouse for speeding tickets and child support are being strongarmed into locked rooms and arrested, loaded into vans under tents behind the courthouse, and they built a fence with netting over it to prevent reporters and court watchers from photographing faces.

One local jail contracted with ICE voluntarily. We were getting close to forcing them to actually follow the rules of ICE detainers and release people if ICE hadn’t come for them. That’s over now. If anyone gets bond on a pending criminal charge, they are arrested and deported without the chance to prove innocence or guilt.

Two of my clients were victims of severe domestic violence. Nearly all have dependent children. Some of the children are US citizens. There are no questions. No support. Give your kids to CPS — this is the only option.

You know undocumented people can get a driver’s license? They can file taxes and get a tax ID? Those, the ones who tried to obey the law, are being taken out one by one, because their names are in a database that they voluntarily joined. Because they want to be here. They want to be Americans.

The judge in a case of mine gave someone a two-day jail sentence. Gone. Case deferrals for dismissal are available for all Americans; if an undocumented person tries to take the same deal, they’re gone. A child client of mine had his father disappear to ICE. A woman had her husband disappear.

It’s now. Detainees kept in horrible conditions, unfed, unwashed, no lawyers, no doctors. It’s now. Shipped to countries where they’ve never been and left without papers. It’s now. It’s now. It’s happening now. It’s happening now.

1. I dare say either AURORA or Yaelokre, but my taste is very mixed. 1) ooooooh boy, I am terrible at deciding anything favourite, cause I love a lot of different things for a lot of different reasons. If I had to pick some recent top ones though, maybe Sleep Token, AURORA, The Crane Wives, Xdinary Heroes, Dirt Poor Robins, The Hoosiers, Ado, Aviators... Well, you see.

2) Sucker from the Arcane soundtrack. I should rewatch Arcane someday.

3) Autumn, and blue is the colour I adore the most shades from and wear the most.

4) Again, hard to answer. Reading, drawing, playing piano, fencing, swimming...

5) I use singing to help me focus on tasks sometimes and this one time the subconscious soundtrack was the melody of "Do You Hear The People Sing" from Les Miserables with the lyrics of "meow" repeated over and over again. That was pretty funny to my friend sitting next to me in math class.

6) Not sure which one I'd have, but what I'd want is some form of mind reading or precognition.

7) We were all making fun of our friend for being old (he was the first one in our group to reach 18) and I asked him whether I could use him as a primary source for my seminary work from history class. A variant on the classic dinosaur insult, but it made him laugh.

8) I dislike most sports, because they hurt, make me feel icky and they're boring, but there are two exceptions, which I adore and do regularly: swimming and fencing (specifically LARP fencing, I'd love to try sports fencing or HEMA too though). Wishing fencing upon you too, prev!

9) I love theatre and musicals, again, picking a favourite proves hard. I'm very fond of Shakespeare though and I would love to see morimyu one day!

10) I'm gonna be an edgelord here and say a three-dimensional projection of a tesseract, cause yeah. I'm obsessed with the fact that for a hypothetical four-dimensional alien that's exactly the same thing as the Necker cube is for as, and that we share the experience of having this projection "switch directions" in our sensory processing. Besides, it's very pretty.

11) Again, hard to decide, but I'm very fond of ravens, bats, cats, and a specific favourite of mine is the gyrfalcon.

3) Early Autumn. I love spooky season when its not yet snowing 😔 Aaand, I honestly love many colors... different colors are cool in different situations. Tho I think if I had to pick a fave it would be shades of green. I love how diverse green is, from almost yellow to almost blue, and it looks so pretty in gradients and works cool w other colors. Always have something green w me or on me.

4) Depends! I love making carnival masques, but I usually am taking my time with these - so its not something that happens very oft - yet something I enjoy greatly. Less time-consuming things I like are painting on something small & making beaded bracelets

5) I wish I could remember what I say to people khnkhnjbb. Mhhhhhh. I remember something I did that made my brother laugh tho. It was many years ago at school, we were sitting together and I was trying to replicate a scheme our teacher drew on the blackboard. I was very concentrated and started very slowly and then just moved my hand in a chaotic fast movement and screwed up the rest of it. My was watching me and started wheezing. (I am bad at using references to this day...)

6) I like thinking of fun specific powers actually. If I were to pick something that would suit me, I think that d be 1) that type of shapeshifting where I am not a human being but a black goo creature that can change its color and form and assume an appearance of whatever it comes up with. OR 2) a type of additional sensory perception. I have some species in my lore who can do that, because they are cave dwellers and need to navigate narrow labyrinth-like tonnels, and their communication depends highly on said sense, as well

7) they wanted to play psychology and lost (about someone obviously trying to get a specific emotional reaction from someone else yet achieving a comically opposit result)

Uhhhhhhhhh I've seen people in public going through you lots blogs— with lots of oh and wooh and sometimes I think when they read something completely gory and not something humans should be so happy about, they sort of look around like dear in headlights and then try to school that completely interested in insane smile out (and fail until like two minutes when they have to leave because that's when they close their phone). And I've also seen people in public going through my main blog with expressions that make me want to kill everyone (this strange mix of pity and antipathy mixed with a painful sort of understanding I can't stand)

My family, as i once said already, doesn't trust me at the stove. This is half because i'm a very picky eater and scientific cook and so i know how to cook like 5 foods scientifically (this means that i weight water, salt and use timers for the cooking time).

The other reason is because early on i had a tendency to explode things.

I exploded:

several cups of hot chocolate in the microwave

more than a pot of rice

once caused a grease fire more recently as i was frying

a couple of pots of pasta don't ask me why

I never burnt anything toh!

I really really really hate being late if I m going somewhere and usually prefer having some additional time at wherever I m at to get used to the fact that I m there (esp uni, work, doctor appointments, important meeting etc)

So when I say "I ll be on time" it means 20-30 mins early, "I might be a bit late" = 5-10 mins early, "I am going to be late" = right on time, "I AM GOING TO BE TERRIBLY LATE AHHHH" = 5-10 mins late.

I d rather not show up at all than be 30 mins late.... I am trying to break these habits tho

Also the closer the place I need to get to the lesser this rule applies for some reason
