I've become very curious about Beast Machines fans who go on about the series having themes, either implicitly or explicitly saying that it's the first Transformers show to have Themes™️. Because, like... They know Beast Wars had themes, right? I mean, how can you watch Dinobot or Depth Charge or Tigatron or Blackarachnia as an adult and not recognize that these storylines carry specific themes? There's even overarching themes for the whole show regarding the circular nature of time and, for as much as people say that Beast Wars is "Furmanist"/completely centered on the robots, the show very much intertwined the fate of humans and Cybertronians, tying it into Dinobot's storyline.

I mean, to look at themes, we can even contrast the ways Tigatron and Tarantulas respond to the Vok, reacting in such different ways that they seem like narrative foils. Tigatron accepts the presence of the other power, chooses to be as much of a steward he can be to a home that is not his, to enjoy nature, and is eventually taken by them and used as a vessel.

Meanwhile, Tarantulas learns of the Vok and rejects them. They are beings outside of his control and so he fears and hates them. He does what he can to escape or spite them, relying on technology to do so, and he is eventually killed by them.

Nature vs technology, if you will.

As the local Beast Machines fan, I definitely agree that Beast Machines is not the first show to have Themes™. Every piece of Transformers media we’ve gotten from G1 to modern day either has themes woven into their narratives/stories or has themes naturally develop as as result of the stories they're telling, and you'll see this occur in some shape or form. I personally have never seen the Transformers franchise as themeless and it confuses me when I hear people say otherwise.

I suspect what the Beast Machines fans you mentioned might be trying to say is that they enjoy Beast Machines being a lot “louder” in its themes and how it uses them differently compared to Beast Wars.

Beast Wars has an action adventure framework at its heart, with themes either subtly woven into its stories or naturally emerging from the characters or conflict. Its themes lean more character-driven than narrative-driven. Beast Machines, however, has an explicit philosophical and spiritual theme based framework at its heart. It doesn't just have themes present, those themes actively drive the narrative. This show's questions about balance, individuality, nature vs technology, emotion vs logic, and freedom vs authoritarian control (regardless of how well or poorly those questions were answered or implemented) determine how characters behave, what choices they make, and how the story progresses. Arguably, that drastic change in framework and theme usage (plus some questionable marching orders by Hasbro and Mainframe) is why Beast Machines still tends to get mixed to negative receptions by Beast Wars fans to this very day.

With all of that being said, I have seen a tendency among Transformers fans (especially some Transformers One fans and some Beast Machines fans) to assume that if a piece of media isn't explicitly telling the audience its themes, then themes aren't present. Which generally is not how storytelling works. The magic of storytelling is the many forms it takes. You can have themes a la Beast Wars where they exist more subtly through character interactions or conflict and create a story where you're encouraged to discover those themes. But you can also have themes a la Beast Machines where they set the foundation for the narrative and create a story that wears its themes proudly on its sleeve, inviting/challenging you to join in on answering the questions it poses.

TL;DR there are often themes in stories for those with eyes to see

a lot of people are reblogging this saying that most "lazy" people are actually just disabled or that the concept of laziness itself is a product of our society's obsession with productivity. this is all true, but it is not my point.

even if someone WAS just lazy and simply didn't want to do anything but lie on the couch and watch tv, they should still have these things. it's irrelevant whether some people aren't actually lazy because everyone, including hypothetical lazy people, should have their basic needs met.

if we have the resources to do it, there is no defense of letting people die because they don't want to work, and much less because they can't.

I don't want lazy people to have basic necessities because they "actually" deserve them because they ARE working or CAN'T work. I want lazy people to have basic necessities because they are people, and we shouldn't leave them to die when we have the resources not to.

I think this is just a trend everywhere but I've been very frustrated this week by how much admin work is being outsourced to me as the patient/customer.

My orthodontist tells me I can make an appointment with the surgeon. I call the surgeon. They tell me I need a new referral. I call the orthodontist. They do a referral. I call the surgeon. Referral didn't come through. They tell me about their special unique system we have to use. I call the ortho again and walk them through the referral. I call the surgeon. They say the referral was missing some details so they have to do it again. I call the ortho.

The insurance company calls me about repair shops. I give them the name of the repair shop which I already gave them yesterday. They say they're not in their system but I can use them, but I have to call the repair shop to ask them to contact the insurance company. I call the repair shop and they say the insurance company is supposed to email them.

I feel like at a certain point these constant fetch quests become unreasonable?? Is it too much to expect these groups to communicate with each other instead of making me run back and forth between them???

Made this post and then the new property manager (who started on Monday and only finally emailed us today because I sent a vaguely professionally hostile email to her boss because I hadn't heard anything and was not convinced she existed) asked for a list of open action items which her predecessor should have had but apparently wasn't keeping track of, which I learned when I met her boss and provided her with the list of open action items, which I guess tragically died in a fire in the last 2 weeks since she was sitting at my kitchen table, being menaced by the skull. How many people's jobs am I doing now
