favourite things about YD (S1-S2)
I figured I'd finally do a positive, appreciative post for the earlier seasons of the show because I'm re-watching and because I don't buzz about them as much as the later seasons, and I should. After all, that's where it all started and it was my childhood. I was literally seven or eight when I first saw it (my family were forced to watch it and they still are, so they know a lot about it, they get the references). And I've been obsessed with vampires and the supernatural, especially in storytelling, ever since.
To be fair, though, my ranking is: Season 3, Season 2, Season 4, Season 1, Season 5. But anyway... my quick favourites from these two first seasons:
The Count's small horrified gasps whenever he has flashbacks of the Transylvanian mob/elders.
One of my favourite sibling moments, hands down, was the "flying scene". Vlad being a smug little bastard is everything to me. "Dad, for the last time, I can't-- believe it. I can fly" while waving the ten pound note to Ingrid, and the way she goes to snatch it off him.
Zoltan's voice acting, specifically when he says "Master Vlad". This is something that has stuck with me for YEARS because I have very good tonal memory (it's a gift and a curse) and I continue to do an impression every other day, to myself and to my cat, who is actually named after THE Vladimir Dracula. Also, "ahh, Master Barry!"
Renfield's borderline hatred towards Vlad and Ingrid because he's an attention whore... which then turns into fear in the later seasons because they have powers. Love that.
Jonno's growing concern over his father's sanity... pure comedy. The line delivery on "oh, I see, you're not crazy. You're insane!" Though I have always believed that Eric's parenting skills were almost on par with the Count's... I suppose that's why there is countless parallels between them and their sons. It's kind of why I hold no sympathy for Mina in the later seasons. Don't get me wrong, I feel for their loss, of course. I liked Eric, he was entertaining. He was insane, though. Not for believing in vampires obviously, but for deluding himself into thinking he was an almighty slayer who could just stroll into a castle full of vampires with his somewhat untrained child, no hesitation. So, in that regard, I think Eric eventually dying was on him and him alone, for getting into that occupation in the first place, not because of Vlad's mindwipe, like Mina likes to believe. Occupational hazard, my guy, don't know what to tell you. But sure, blame the then-fourteen-year-old child who had no control over what he was doing and vow to kill him instead of acknowledging that your husband was gonna get himself and your son killed a long time ago.
Ah, back when Ingrid yelling "DAD" would actually gain his attention. In fact, he would speed down to her. I know he only does it because she only ever yells like that when she's snitching on Vlad, the favourite child, but still... it's one of the more slightly positive things about their relationship.
The Count saying Ingrid will be the death of him. It's not necessarily a favourite thing, but it's definitely something I forget he said. Seems like a missed opportunity. I'm very conflicted whenever it comes down to the Count. He's very entertaining, very intriguing, very deep... but he's also awful to his children, whom I love. And the show never does good on them, when compared to him. He doesn't really have to be torn away from Alex McCauley because she's a human, but he initially condemns Ingrid's relationship with Will and then actively ruins Vlad's relationship with Erin, and so on and so on. If he never learnt his lessons, never realised what a terrible father he was... I say kill him. At the very least, scare him, put him in a serious life-or-death situation. I always say Ingrid should've toyed with him, put him in a UV cage, forced him to admit things and apologise... but I digress.
The classic underhanded innuendo's that you miss as a child, along with the Count calling Magda a "slut" in more refined ways.
"And what do you say if she invites you over to see her coffin?"
"I'm not that sort of boy."
"That's Delilah. She's a friend from school."
"Oh. And already, you've gotten her into a coffin. You dark horse!"
8. I loved Ivan, Boris and Olga. The quick removal of Ivan's sobriety, shall we say, and the way he turns into a beast, grinding bloody, raw meat, the way he's just covered in blood. The suspense of waiting for Boris' transformation and when it actually happens, it's like "WOAH, he got real cute and real crazy". The "lock up your daughters! Look at you!" from the Count always gets me. It's still a shame to me that he was killed off because the whole "mad cousin who was shipped home in a straight jacket" vibe could've been great in the later seasons. Olga and Ingrid's feud is always entertaining, though I was more focused on the intricacy of how Olga was kind of on her high horse because her father, when he was known as Harvey, treat her really well unlike the Count with Ingrid. It's only when he becomes Ivan again, that he's yelling things like "go away, brat" which causes her to cower from him and get a reality check. It was interesting.
9. I'd like to take the time to commend Gerran for his acting, ONCE AGAIN (I'll get to my favourite Clare moments very soon, for all you goth lesbians). He's a child in Season 1 and 2, but it's like, no wonder he takes the cake as the star of the show. HIS CRYING SCENES?! Hello?! The scene where he hypnotises the Count accidentally, and it kinda starts out as a somewhat goofy moment (with Robin playing puppeteer/ventriloquist with the Count), but turns into a shockingly depressing moment when Vlad starts to realise he really is a vampire and goes down the rabbit hole of what it all means. "I'm gonna watch all my friends grow old and die, and I'll still be here, flapping around in this gloomy, old castle." THE WAY HE STARTS TO CRY-- the way he presses his lips together to stop himself from crying even harder. It really takes you off guard. And then the moment at the end of Season 1, where everyone thinks the Count has been slain. Ingrid isn't that bothered for obvious reasons, but Vlad, man... his attachment to his father is always a weak point for me. The way he is knelt by his head, just quietly crying, the way he slowly looks to Ingrid first before agreeing to the Count's promise about being a good vampire... dude.
10. Okay, my favourite Clare acting moments. I mean, the obvious scenes come to mind immediately. Her reaction to Will's death (the way she cries his name, the way she balls his ashes into her fists, and the shine in her eyes as she cries, glaring at the slayers). The moments that follow, like the iconic finale cliffhanger. I think Clare has a talent for making the entire vibe of the show change. She's good at unsettling people. It's part of the writing and her character, but if she wasn't a good actress, it wouldn't hit as hard as it does. I remember watching that scene when I was a kid and just being captivated, sat right in front of the T.V, mouth hanging open, cause the way everything became a lot of more darker and unsettling when Ingrid stood over Vlad, face full of disdain... I can't put it into words.
11. Separate from that... the entire scene where Ingrid pulls Will into the art classroom... again, no one understands the cultural significance it has. Truly one of the best moments in the whole show. I don't know whether the "locking eyes with your true love makes the world spin out of control" thing was supposed to be set up as a common occurrence for the Dracula's and they just never did it after Will and Ingrid, but either way, I like to think it's completely unique to them because holy shit was their love story special! First of all, I love Will as a character. He may not have been fully fleshed out, he wasn't at all, but he didn't need to be for me to love him. What more could I ask for Ingrid's first love? He's got a cruel sense of humour, he's incredibly cute, he's unbothered by what other's think, he draws huge pictures of her for her birthday, he rushes to the castle with flowers and stays to fix the throne she broke, and as a vampire, he was completely devoted to her. All their scenes are memorable. The cinema scene was one of the first indications to me, rewatching it, that the show was teetering on the edge of the age rating and into something more adult. Mainly because when Ingrid bites him, Will's eyes roll back into his head and he has a very, um, pleased expression... to put it lightly. For real though, it was very orgasmic-looking.
