commented on a tiktok about the scene where Thorin comes out of his dragon sickness bc of how goofy it looks (in the bts Peter does say that they couldn’t figure out what to do with the scene) and I thought of an alternative that would go super hard
Richard’s great at acting crazy bc his eye acting is bonkers, right?
Imagine Thorin’s walking around Erebor with those gold sickness whispers in his ears like in the actual scene but he sees movement out of the corner of his eye
He whips around and shouts to see who’s there but doesn’t get an answer
He sees movement again and chases after them, shouting out “THIEVES!” (as a callback to Gollum)
As he runs (and run here is used loosely bc of how heavy his coat and crown are), you get glimpses of his reflection in the gold around Erebor. He stumbles and chases the intruder, getting closer to the throne room.
There’s a brief moment where Thorin gets a better look at the thief and he thinks it’s his father (which cracks open the gold sickness to bring back the Thorin Oakenshield Gandalf first found for the quest). He calls out to him and gives chase again, this time more desperate. He takes off some of the gold items he’s wearing in his haste.
Finally, he catches up to his “father” in the throne room where he sees his dark figure between the pillars. Thorin picks up a torch to see better and approaches.
In the growing light, more features come clear on the figure. The coat. The crown.
“Grandfather?” Thorin asks in horror. We get a flashback to Thror’s beheading but from Thorin’s POV and then a shot of it reflected in young!Thorin’s eyes.
In the present, Thorin’s steps closer with the torch and we realize no one’s there.
Thorin’s not seeing his grandfather but himself.
We return to the rest of the shot where Thorin throws his crown with realization.
The gold sickness is gone.
