I heard the new Boards of Canada album through a leaked recording of a listening session, and given that I had to listen to BOC Maxima for a decade ripped from a web stream of a French radio show that played the cassette tape on the show, it sounds pretty good and I want to get to a listening party later this week

this took SUCH a huge deal of unlearning because, like so many of you, i came out of a home where being quietly in trouble WAS the default state, and i DID grow up not just with the assumption but borderline religious conviction that Everyone Is Mad At Me, I Am Bad, I Must Exist In A Constant State of Attempting to Pacify The Natural Rage I Inspire In Everyone. and no it actually turns out that my family are the freaks . and yours are too

if the peacefulness of your relationship with someone (familial, romantic, friendly, anything) can be destroyed by effective communication/asking them for effective communication, you have got to get out of there. if you can’t get out of there, you’ve got to throw away any ideas about what that person thinks of you because they have their own shit to figure out before they can accurately read anyone else
idk what other disabled person needs to hear this but if you need someone to do something for you that would be very difficult for you to do but very easy for them to do, that is a small favor. you dont have to feel gratitude and guilt at scale based on how hard it would be for you to do it disabledly

It's so wild to me when people question the relevancy of public libraries & I know I am biased because I work in one but like... where do y'all think your grandma's and grandpa's go when you gift them an e-reader for Christmas but don't show them how to use it? Where do homeless people go when they're constantly criminalized for chilling on the side of a building or setting up camp in the park? Where do you think the neighborhood children go when there is NO park for them to hang out or play at? Where else can literally anyone walk in and have access to computers and internet and printing and faxing whether or not they are a member? Where else are local organizations holding their meetings?
And I know that this is specific to my location but my branch also hosts free lunches through a local program for children 18 and under during the majority of the summer. Any child, in need or not, has access to at least one balanced meal that day. Libraries are so important for so many reasons and none of that even includes to free access to books and physical media!

It was kind of a joke between me and a friend ("you wouldn't judge someone for having gone rock climbing with a bunch of different people") but honestly the more I thought about it the more I bought into it unironically because:
It is a physical activity done with one or more partners
You should only go rock climbing with people you trust to not let you fall
You should not go rock climbing with someone who is drunk or currently incapable of rational decision-making
Some people get super super super into rock climbing and do not shut up about all the places they have climbed and how many are left on their bucket list and these people are usually men between the ages of 20 and 35 and like it's fine dude I'm glad you're happy but I don't know what most of those mountains even are
While many consider it a fun activity, pressuring someone into climbing when they don't want to (or ignoring their feelings and just dangling them off a cliff,) could cause both psychological and physical trauma
There is no moral value to it whatsoever. Who you have gone rock climbing with (or whether you have rock climbed at all) has no bearing on who you are as a person. Imagine telling someone "it's not that heights make you nauseous, it's just that you haven't found the right person to belay you!" or "you need to save your first time rock climbing for someone special." That would be absurd.
For some people it is a deep and moving personal experience.
historically I have not asked myself "will this aggravate my hip flexor injury" before participating when perhaps I should have 😔

The age of eligibility for an ABLE account, allowing USAmerican disabled people to save up money without losing their government assistance for having “too much,” is going to go up to cover disabilities diagnosed by age 46 (currently it’s age 26), meaning a much larger number of people will be able to access them. As the article notes, many Americans don’t know these accounts exist, let alone whether they or someone they care for could qualify for one, so please share this information around.
It seems to me it would obviously be better if the “no more than $2000 a month” limit were simply removed and disabled people could have whatever savings accounts they chose, but this is heaps better than nothing.

You never know when you might need this information but if you’re disabled you should have the knowledge. I just lost my partner of 16 plus years to cancer and the Able account should be able to help me continue to have some assets that will allow me to stay in my home.
