i honestly don't really understand why "some people prefer watching gameplay online rather than playing games themselves" is treated as such a taboo when being a spectator is considered a pretty mundane way to engage with most sports, game shows, reality tv or even just like. chess.
I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things

This is basically a five-paragraph essay so I'm adding a pagebreak, but I wanted to verbalize some of my thoughts. Take a shot every time I say "narrative".
I actually don't think Jax's abstraction is misaligned with the themes or intent of the show. And I do think it makes sense for a deeply closeted, abusive, self-destructive person to drive themselves into isolation and suicide through their utter refusal to change. It makes sense for her character that she never apologized or directly faced the people that she hurt. I actually do not have an issue with that. But I do have an issue with the way she was handled from a broader narrative perspective.
Jax's refusal to be held accountable is absolutely in-character. The show's refusal to hold her accountable is a writing issue. Does anyone know what I mean? There is virtually zero effort made to give independent closure to her victims. We get a couple moments where Gangle is allowed to have "complex feelings" after years of strategic, targeted abuse, and then we move on. At no point during the entire series does Jax meaningfully acknowledge even the most basic personhood of the people around her. She can mock, blackmail, terrorize, and threaten everyone around her, while being alloted endless time to be sad and vaguely regretful and hurt and panicky, but nobody else is given any screentime to have feelings about her mistreatment of them beyond the occasional two-minute conversation.
I'm not even asking for some kind of grisly punitive on-screen retaliation, I just wish she wasn't so heavily prioritized (and arguably coddled) by the narrative that every other character was left neglected. Ironically, I think Gangle's episode is easily one of the most interesting in the entire series. It made me excited to see how the show would continue to explore her and everyone else. But we never really got that.
I have a lot of criticism towards the pacing and writing of the show in general and I think this was (in part) just an extension of that issue. The cracks became more apparent the closer we got to the conclusion, but the show would have benefited from tighter writing from the very beginning. I was personally happy to see Caine ultimately integrated into the ensemble, but even his arc was abrupt, rushed, and sanitized. The abandoned AI who had a frenzied breakdown after two decades and plunged everyone into highly personalized nightmare simulations didn't even get enough screentime for a fully realized character arc, in favor of Jax Sadness Scene #26483.
Even if the show had gotten more episodes (which I believe it absolutely should have), I'm not convinced that the extra screentime wouldn't have been used on Jax, because she is so disproportionately emphasized by the narrative that everyone else's storylines and character arcs are half-baked at best and borderline nonexistent at worst. We have a whole lineup of essentially interesting, flawed characters who are never given enough room to be individually explored. Even Pomni, our other main character, is characterized mostly by her proximity to Jax. We don't even know what Jax likes about her. There's room there too for an interesting conversation, but the show doesn't want to have it.
