This theory makes so much sense.. "Zooble, look at this cool bee I drew!" He was hoping to take Zooble's mind off their issues while also expecting praise because his creators were so proud of him for being able to make a bee. If his creators loved the bee, why wouldn't the humans trapped in the circus not like it? They're gonna be so proud!

Plus Caine put bees on all his important works. His personal notepad where he comes up with adventure ideas and the blueprints he gave to Abel. The bee provides him with inspiration and is a reminder that it's possible to have validation and that his work means something and is possible to be proud of.

I'm fascinated by the line "don't need to scream if you ain't got a mouth" that Caine delivers in his villain song, because while it's obviously the strongest reference to I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream in the entire show, I think it also starkly illustrates the biggest difference between Caine and AM: that Caine is way, way more vulnerable to criticism.

The original line is delivered by the last human: it's Ted's sad internal lament that he's become unable to even express his pain, which is its own form of psychological horror. It's AM's final, cruelest joke. But here the line is instead delivered BY the AI. Caine did his best to please the humans. But the humans just WON'T stop complaining! And that's torture for him. So rather than listening to them, which would take willingness to reflect and improve, he just takes their mouths away, so they can't complain anymore.

Rather than being a cruelty inflicted on the humans, it reframes the whole line as a way for the AI to protect its ego. It's Caine going "la la la I can't hear you." It's not a clever form of torture, it's just pathetic and childish. Caine's ego is his biggest flaw. And it's what gets him killed.

So after TADC's 5th episode, a lot of little details about the circumstances of the Circus have been revealed:

1. C&A has moved or been fully shut down for long enough that the building housing the Circus has been considered abandoned. For that to happen, you'd need a good 10 years of neglect, I'd say.

2. Pomni and Zooble both got trapped while exploring the abandoned C&A building. (Zooble is the second-newest, according to Gooseworx)

3. It's modern day out there, with Youtube and whatnot. Remembering that the Digital Circus is a late-90s era PC game, that means Kinger has probably been trapped in the Circus for around 25 years. For perspective, he's been in there for longer than Gangle, Jax, and Zooble have been ALIVE. No WONDER he's crazy!

4. This is further emphasized by the fact that nobody else knew about Kinger's wife. For that to happen, you'd need two degrees of separation from when she abstracted: both the people that knew her AND the people that knew OF her are gone. How many abstracted people have been entirely forgotten? How many people has Kinger seen lose themselves?

5. Caine's general looniness may not JUST be the result of him running non-stop for so long. The physical hardware hosting the Circus is likely starting to degrade after so much time. Eventually it WILL give out entirely, assuming it isn't being maintained. The fact that it's still receiving electricity despite the building supposedly being "abandoned" DOES imply someone is trying to maintain the circus, though!

6. If C&A is abandoned then nobody is maintaining the characters' physical bodies. The fact that nobody's died implies their consciousnesses are fully severed from their bodies. This also means that they probably CAN'T escape from the Circus, because they have no bodies to return to.

7. HOWEVER the fact that Pomni didn't mention seeing any decaying bodies when finding the headset implies they're either being moved, or there are many different headset that all lead to the Circus. Either way, it feels like someone on the outside is working to maintain the Circus's existence for some reason...

I wonder why it's always October 15... Is there something significant about that date? Does every human get put into the circus only on that date? Is there some sort of event that allows people into the building?

Also, did anyone else notice that Ragatha seemed to know who put her in there? She kept calling out to people that were there before she put the headset on, whereas, with Pomni, it seems like she wandered into a building that was abandoned and put on the headset randomly. Was Ragatha a part of the program that's running this? Does Pomni's insertion date differ from October 15?

Okay. Hot take. I don’t think Jax ran over a child. I don’t think that’s what that was about at all. Jax is characterized by escapism and deflection, refusing to admit his problems and avoiding other people’s attempts to help him. His character has never been about guilt. To add this superfluous and frankly thematically unrelated element would undermine him as a character. I personally think he ran away from home/got kicked out or something along those lines. Running away makes sense to his character and additionally his reactions to leaving the circus have always been centered around evidently not having people waiting for him on the other side. Everything in animation is intentional and with how TADC is written, it’s very clear that everything said is intentional. He has nothing in the outside world.
