Hotch claps a hand reassuringly on Spencer's shoulder, then steps up to the officer in question.
"Is there a problem here?" he asks sharply.
"Your agent," the officer drawls, rolling his eyes at Spencer, "is making people uncomfortable."
"Excuse me?" The officer glares at Hotch.
"Who, specifically, is being made uncomfortable by one of my best agents?"
The officer balks at him.
"Well, me, for starters."
"You said 'people.' So far you've named one person. Who else has told you that my agent makes them uncomfortable?"
The officer looks around awkwardly. He opens his mouth, but can't seem to come up with anything to say.
"Right, just you, then," Hotch says dismissively.
"He keeps repeating everything everyone says!" the officer sputters.
"Everyone? In the entire precinct?" Hotch stares at him pointedly.
"Well, just your agents, but--"
"And he's doing this out in public? Disrupting officers and civilians?"
"No, just in the conference room we set up for you, but--"
"So, you came into our space, observed something that made you, and only you, uncomfortable - presumably simply because you've never seen it before - and you decided to harass my agent about it?"
"My agent, who is well respected, excellent at his job, and smarter than you or I could ever dream of being?"
"I only see one person acting inappropriately here, officer, and it's you. Unless you have anything else that requires my attention, I'd like to get back to work with my team. My entire team."
The officer at least has the decency to turn beet red as he turns and speed-walks in the other direction.
Hotch turns around to find Spencer standing a few feet away.
"Thanks, Hotch," he murmurs.
"No problem, Reid," Hotch says fondly. "You did nothing wrong. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise."
