A ficlet I made during a fever dream. I'm still recovering and working on the request of Dew's sleep issues, but I couldn't resist.

"Sweetheart, please... It's time"
"No, he's not going!" Dewdrop yelled, holding Aether tight inside his little arms. Tears already starting to overflow his eyes as the other kit also started to hug his waist, unable to speak between the sobs he was letting out.
Omega's heart ached at the sight before he exchanged a hopeless glance with the Aether parents. Both were waiting at the door with the same sad notion of the inevitability of the two kits departure.
He'd be lying if he said he didn't have that notion from the very first moment when he and Alpha introduced the two, but seeing the way Dew held Aether so protectively, even though he was a head smaller than him broke Omega's heart in a way he couldn't have anticipated even in million years. Yet, there was nothing he could really do about it now.
"I know it's painful, dear... But it's time for Aether to go home." Omega said in the softest way he could manage as he tried to step closer, but the little ones still backed away as if he had roared with his claws anf teeth ready to get them.
"But this is home!" Dewdrop yelped, big shiny tears finally starting to waterfall from his face " 's not fair... You were the one who said he came to be my friend, and now that we finally are you want to take him away from me! That's not fair, not fair, not fair!-"
"Dew..." Aether finally spoke, rising to his feet to face Dewdrop's confused and fearful expression with his own painful but accepting one. The two kits just staring at each other for a moment, as if no other words were needed to understand what Aether meant by his gaze, as Dewdrop's eyes filled with realization.
"No... No, i won't let you go! You can't!" He pleaded, trapping his friend in his weak and trembling arms once again.
"I have to..." Aether sobbed, hugging Dewdrop through his own crying in an attempt to stop his. Dew's defensive attitude finally cracking as he softened his arms around him and hid his face in Aether's shoulder.
"Please, don't leave me" Dew whispered, squeezing Aether's shirt with his fists.
"I'm sorry" Aether whispered back, petting the back of Dewdrop's Head with his little hand before finally gathering enough courage to pull away, but still holding Dew's hands in his own for a few moments before his mother called for him.
"ልቿፕዘቿዪ, we have to go now..."
Dewdrop held his hands tightly, trying one last time to stop him before finally letting go, keeping their eyes locked as Aether slowly stepped back to his parents.
"Bye, Dew. I..." Aether struggled a bit to find her words without starting to cry again, failing as his eyes began to water one more time. "I-I really... Really, really, really liked being your friend!" And before he could process it, Dewdrop had flown in to give him one last hug.
The two just hugged eachother tightly as they whispered their goodbyes, until Dew finally took the initiative to pull away, placing a small toy spider inside Aether's hand, the Quintessence's eyes filled with joy, yet hesitation.
"Mhm." He nodded, closing Aether's hand around the toy " 'Want you to have it. So you don't forget about me down there." Dew tore his gaze away from the Aether, trying to disguise the little blush that had emerged onto his cheeks from what he'd said.
"Oh, Dew... I would never forget about you. Ever." He smiled, infecting the shorter one to smile as well, exchanging a final little wave with him as his parents finally took him away, leaving Dew and Omega alone in the room, with silence prevailing for long seconds that seemed like hours.
"I'm so sorry you had to say good bye, Dew..." Omega finally dared to speak again, kneeling down to place his hand on Dew's shoulder and offer him the comfort he seemed to need.
" 's fine." He simply said, but the sadness and pain in his eyes was evident as he keep to stare at the door. "...Hey, dad?"
Finally turning to look into Omega's eyes, Dew gripped the hem of his shirt tightly, pulling it tight as he fought not to let the tears fall again. "I-I know I'm all grown up... B-but can you hold me up just a little bit for now?"
And how could Omega say no to that? Bringing Dewdrop close to his chest, Omega picked him up and let him go back to crying everything that troubled his little heart, patting his back through it all. At that moment, Dew seemed smaller than ever.
"I'll hold you up everytime you need me to. Even if it looks like i'm not here to do it..."
Squeezing Omega's neck even tighter, Dew trembled his words, trying his best to be understandable as he muttered his unfair doubts. And Omega did is best to answear them.
"I don't get it... Why did he need to go?"
Omega knew this conversation would one day come. Loss came naturally to everyone during lifetime, and Omega knew he couldn't protect Dew from it forever, and even though that didn't stop him from wishing he could, the least he could do was help him through it as best he could.
"Sometimes people need to go, Dew."
"They have their own path and story to live... and sometimes, we aren't always present throughout it with them."
"But it hurts..." Dewdrop cried, curling his little fingers in Omega's braid, watching its silver glow. It was just like Aether's and that comforted him in spite of everything.
"I know... but not all of them will go away. Some, the ones that matter most will always stay. One way or another."
"Will i ever see him again?..."
