I was trying to follow the era that. Characters were introduced. because I think 1) it is hugely influential to the way that any characters fashion is formed. tabby boom boom wouldn’t look like that if she hadn’t debuted in the 80s.

also 2) it’s just more fun

I only drew up three but I have a lot more. thoughts circulating. this is objectively bad art but shhhhhhh. tabby was harder than I anticipated honestly. she’s very eclectic and colourful and just so so deeply 80s and it was hard for me to decipher a masculine equivalent to her outfits bc her quintessential look in my head is like. the suspenders and off the shoulder top.

but I was looking at a lot of 80s fashion in general and ended up taking a lot from like new wave fashion. the hair is a direct copy from a picture of a band. the vibes match pretty well I think with the layers and colours and bits and pieces added on.

with Sam I was very much focused on a specific point in time with the point in nm after he meets lila, where he starts to rebel a little bit more and you see him start really liking punk fashion in canon. it’s so fun. outside of that I don’t think Sam puts much thought into his clothes. I have dedicated myself to the thought that sams flannels were his dads and that continues in a gender swap. so it’s a very very simple basic look except I added the crop top from Lila. the hair though. sams hair is what really got the thought put in.

he has SUCH a distinctive hairstyle. and the same hairstyle wouldn’t be on a girl version of him. but. the vibe needs to match so I ended up running with a shoulder length simple look w bangs. bc the bangs can follow that spikiness in a way imo. and then I was looking at 80a punk hairstyles and I think the ponytail and bangs work well as an in between of like. ‘sweet farm girl who’s just so innocent and down homesy’ and the punk look that sam really really loves

not shown is gender swapped Roberto who is mystifying to me. bc that is a fashionable little boy. but his most iconic outfits are based on magnum pi. and im not well versed in 80s pop culture enough to know what kind of tv character could take that place as a fashion icon. while yeah girls can dress like that i believe that while gender swapped Roberto would be masculine in the same way normal Roberto dresses super gay. it would still be girly looks in general.

I have more. Scott got drawn up and I have in depth thoughts on the o5 and clothing but we are just sharing these two images for now. if anybody has specific characters they have thoughts on PLEASE hmu I deeply enjoy this I am occasionally a theatre costume designer irl
