whitsantos communicate only through noise after rough shifts

they walk into the apartment dragging their feet, kicking their shoes off the second they enter. trinity immediately collapsing on the couch and dennis making his way to the kitchen,

“hmph” [dinner]

“mm-mm” [don’t want any]

“hmm” [yeah, okay] he makes two plates anyways

he heats up leftover pizza from a game night they hosted a couple days prior. walking over to the couch with both plates in hand, he lets out a small grunt and lightly taps her legs sprawled across the couch with one his own. she groans as she sits up, making room on the couch for him. he sets the pizza down on the coffee table, and she opens Netflix to find something to watch,

“hmm?” [how about this?] she asks

“uh uh”

they repeat this cycle for about 5 minutes while they browse the app. eventually landing on a mindless animal documentary, they eat their pizza and watch as some celebrity narrates a school of fish swimming through the ocean

they finish eating and decide, with a “mm?” and a “mhm”, to turn it off and finish the documentary another night. dennis practically has to pull trinity off the couch so that they can go get ready for bed

he’s already laying down, taking up her entire bed when she comes out of her bathroom. when she goes to pinch his arm and signal him to move over, she notices how dehydrated he is. she walks to the kitchen and comes back with a glass of water. she taps his arm,

“mmm” [drink this]

he just shakes his head. she sets the glass on the nightstand and lifts him up, pushing him until he leans on the headboard. she brings the straw to his lips and holds the glass as he drains it. when she removes the straw from his lips, he shifts back into a sleeping position that doesn’t stretch across the entire mattress

she takes the glass back to the kitchen and refills it, this time leaving it to rest on the nightstand for the night. when she gets into bed herself, she can hear him lightly snoring as she drifts asleep to the sound

fiverek | “mr five”

i like to think that the two of them have banter-y ways to refer to each other. it starts out as a formality - derek had begun by referring to five as “mr hargreeves” during their first meeting, and five had responded to that with such a look of distaste that derek had never done it again. five uses derek’s surname to refer to him, or ‘agent surname’ when he’s being snippy or sarcastic. (i’ve seen a bunch of different surnames for derek, but my favorites are harper and coleman, so i’ll be using those.)

five sarcastically says: “thank you for your insightful contribution, agent coleman.”

and derek matches it with a mock-formal: “anytime, mr five.”

(derek doesn’t use ‘agent five’ or ‘agent hargreeves’ unless referring to five to their superiors, and he knows that it needles at five to just be referred to as ‘mr’, especially in the earlier days of shadowing five and being partners. it’s not a big enough issue for five to say anything about it though. five never admits that being called ‘mr five’ kind of grows on him. he’s not one for nicknames, but this is more of a little quirk between the two of them.)

derek reminds five of punctuality, because five is still adjusting to not being able to blink to wherever he needs to be (not that derek knows of the powers he used to have), and it’s always light-hearted. five straightens the papers on derek’s desk, because derek is a great analyst but five’s way of giving back is always in gestures, and this is one of the ways he does so. 

note: this next bit is from tony/pepper’s dynamic (iron man), but i think it could be cute between fiverek too-

“will that be all, agent harper?” (sarcastic)

“yes, that will be all, mr five.” (teasing)

it goes from bickering to banter so seamlessly that they don’t need to acknowledge when these patterns they’ve fallen into have turned affectionate. they’ve grown comfortable in each other’s presence. five calls derek “annoying” so often that it’s practically a love confession, and derek calls him “uptight” in a tone so fond that people pause when they’re referred to as “partners” because they can’t tell if they mean work partners or romantic partners. 

(it’s somewhere between both.)
